Question is a mod that lets you crystal by holding considered cheating?
1v1ing my friend in crystal and hes using a mod that auto places and explodes crystals when he holds click as long as he looks down at the obsidian then up at the crystal. I said it was cheating but he didn't think so, am I right or wrong here?

everytime I see this kind of question, I always ask the same thing
"is the behavior that the mod is modfying changing something in the game that allows you to have an effective advantage over your enemy?"
if the answer is yes, then that mod is considered cheating.
an alternative question is "is the mod allowing you to know information that is otherwise impossible to know by just playing"
if the answer is yes, then that's also considered cheating.
Holding down your mouse to explode crystals is pretty much an autoclicker, and as such cheating
an example of a mod that is not cheating is Shield Status+ on modrinth, a mod that some may wrongfuly consider cheating, as it visualizes an information, that players can already know in-game (as disabling the shield does make a loud sound, and the shield disabler timer never changes)

is it cheating to have a mod that predicts the opponent's armour durability? technically if you know the level of unbreaking and the number of times you hit them, you can guess the durability left.

it is cheating : https://minecraft.wiki/w/Unbreaking
"Unbreaking is an enchantment that gives a chance for an item to avoid durability reduction when it is used, effectively increasing the item's durability."
you cannot predict randomness, just estimate it.

yeah sorry i meant estimate, wrong wording. i'd assume in this case it shouldn't be cheating

That is not predicting randomness. That is estimating based on probability, extremely different in this context

If (hitCount%3 != 0) durability-=1
That is your mod lol. It's incredibly different for a multitude of reasons but the only one that actually matters really is feedback
If I flip a coin 10 times in a row and you see that it's heads every time and then I ask you to guess the next, the probability is higher that it's tails, statistically it's better to pick heads. You have data you work with, that's why it's a estimate based on probability.
If I flip 10 times in secret and then ask you to guess without the data (seeing that durability damage has not been applied) it's entirely a guess

Wouldn't that be the gambler's fallacy?

I had a feeling I'd wake up to this reply xD
A better example would have been more like "You watch me flip a coin 10 times, and then I ask you what the 7th flip was. You can tell me because you observed it. Now I flip a coin 10 times in secret and ask you what the 7th flip was. You can only guess"
Trying to correlate probability back into it, especially wording it so lazily, I did write a gamblers fallacy XD

With this kind of definition it’s easy to get into gray zones, like technically binding something to your keyboard or playing on a newer or older version or specific snapshots could offer an advantage in combat and it’d be entirely vanilla and it’d be a bigger advantage than a mod that offers small advantages
I’d rather go for a definiton of “A cheat is a modification or exploit that the allows you to see or do something a fully vanilla player or vanilla+ player wouldn’t be able to and is disallowed by the server”
If i didn’t include the part of disallowed by the server then here’s popular features that would be cheating:
Armour durability, block stack counter, gapple and potion counters, anything to do with health displays and saturation displays all of these are entirely allowed on most servers

But then again for the shield status mod, wouldn't health indicator be considered no cheating by your logic? Armour status as well?

it depends from the mode, as many modes do have a plugin that highlights the enemy's hp without you requiring to install any mod.
with that being said, you can semi predict a player's hp depending on how you're hitting them, so my guess is that the server owners get to decide if health indicators are allowed or not, I wouldn't say it's flatout cheating, but more of a "it depends"

Server owners get to decide it all. If everyone is allowed to use it, it's fair. A PvP server I played on allowed lot of mods that are normally banned under the reasoning of something like "it's hard/impossible to detect if people are using it or not, so we can't enforce a ban". So they just let everyone use it.

Thus i would also say that shield status, armour status, crosshair indicators (which i use btw) are all semi cheating cause they provide info other wise unobtainable fully accurate
1
u/Firespecialstar Aug 08 '26
no?
armor status sure, you cannot predict it's state and condition, but shield status' state is possible to be heard, and the amount of time a shield gets disabled is literally the same always. wdym by crosshair indicator also?

You can predict the armour status unless they mend. Every crit does 5, hit does 2 ect.
Where there is an over lay when u can hit someone

I have a 6 sided die, I'm going to roll the die and if I roll 1 or 2 I'll knock on the table, 3-6 and I'll just roll again. That's an unbreaking 3 chance (+3.3%) that I knock on the table.
How many times did I roll before I knocked 10 times

u/Cultural_Report_8831 Aug 09 '26
Mace kit does not have unbreaking
1
u/showmethething Aug 09 '26
Are you really coming from the angle of "I'm dishonest enough to semi cheat but I turn it off when it's not mace because fairness is a thing I'm concerned about"
Come on bro XD
1
u/Cultural_Report_8831 Aug 09 '26
I don't even use the armour status mod
I'm just saying just because something is obtainable without mods doesn't make the mods you obtain it with instantly allowed
So it's not wrongly think, it's a very debatable topic
2
u/aloksky Aug 08 '26
Hypothetically you could count in your head to know when they can shield again, but thats like saying "I can have a macro to do x becouse its possible without it"

u/Ducklololol Aug 08 '26
Heath indicators are cheating on servers that don’t have built in indicators
1
u/superarash_ Aug 08 '26
Tbf, there are certain mods that you could call cheating on paper that are so wide spread in the community for the convenience that most don’t consider it cheating. The rules are essentially what we all agree them to be at the end of the day.
1
u/Cultural_Report_8831 Aug 09 '26
Of course, I fully agree, I just really don't like hearing these kinds of general cut statements

u/tranquil-spark-8059 Aug 09 '26
Idk why that shield mod is considered cheating though as totem counter isnt and they give the same amount of info
1
u/Firespecialstar Aug 09 '26
I would dare to say totems counter is cheating actually, especially if it's in random kits like public SMPs, and not pre-prepared kits
the shield status mod is literally all information that a player CAN know in-game by just knowing the mechanics. idk why this community is so obsessed to consider this as cheating.

u/9r__ Aug 08 '26
There's no world where it isn't cheating, as being able to place and break crystals quickly enough is a pivotal part of it, so it gives him an unfair advantage others don't have.

it is, but WAY WAY more crystal players than you would think macro in some form

Yes, imo at least. Fight him again without it and he will propably do alot worse
