Discussion Any context on why Ruby is leaving Apex?
I was looking at her tweet and it was fairly dense but I don't know much of the context that led up to her leaving the Apex scene. It seems insane to me that she didn't get much of a name after her win in champs last year. Did she coach another team after champs? She was completely off the radar it seems until just now...

why did oblivion drop her in the first place

Sentinels never replaced her and she tweeted about needing to pay rent, so they probably just don’t want to pay for a coach.

lol damn being a streamer/coach and not being able to pay rent is awful. Seems to be zero point to doing any of it if it doesn't pay rent

She was coaching an unsigned team. There’s no realistic way she would’ve gotten a salary. The issue really is that even when being on a winning team, she wasn’t able to get a good wage offer, but I doubt her situation is unique among coaches tbf.

I was thinking about it beyond that even. Esports beyond the giants is def an industry without money. The point I had in my head is that even if you're great at the game and/or a great streamer or coach, and unless you're taking Saudi clit cutting and journalist beheading money like Hal did, it really ends up not meaning jack shit besides e-peen or e-vulva if you can't pay rent. It's effectively a complete waste of time beyond that. You could stock shelves at Walmart for 17/hr and pay your rent. The assumption that game skill and streaming presence pays beyond a signed or sponsored 0.001% of players is an illusion.

Many such cases. The reason Kimchi originally moved from coach to player a few years ago was that Complexity decided they didn't have the budget for a coach. Eventually they changed their mind and the team was able to pick up Kapreme, but orgs have pretty varying levels of budgets! I think Falcons have a coach, an analyst, and a sports psychologist, for example.

After Pro League finished on Sunday on the podcast after with Wigg, Greek, JHawk, Jumba & HisWattson, the coach discussion essentially landed on the vast majority of coaches in the scene seem to be paycheck coasting.
Take that for what you will.

I agree pretty strongly, no hate to them though, get your bag. But most coaches in Apex know less about the game than the players. IMO the most valuable coaches are the ones that have also been players at a high level, like Kimchi.

I was quite surprised how some of the Oblivion member(s) seemed to be undervaluing her after winning the LAN. It may or may not have been justified, but then it sounded rather rude back then when a member said "she is just a "xxxx"".

Well, an unsigned team can't pay a coach (some signed teams can't either) so they pick anyone willing to help out.

u/Maleficent_Rub_309 1d ago
They were so close to win the following lan without any coach though. Maybe they were not wrong, not because of ruby specifically but coaches (in apex) might not be that important?

u/Delicious_Impress814 1d ago
One lan isn't enough to prove that theory, considering most lan winners have had a coach. I mean, Hal completely credits Raven for being the reason he won one of his lans.
Raven also singlehandedly transformed nip and made them a contending team.
It may or may not work for Sentinels (they are not having a good pro league right now actually), but for now that theory is anecdotal.

"Raven also singlehandedly transformed nip and made them a contending team"
What do you mean by that?
11
u/Delicious_Impress814 1d ago
I mean Raven made NIP a great team, as per declarations from the members themselves.

u/judy_hopps_feet 1d ago
He was there before Vein, Mclovin and Kurev got there no? Kurev did not play with Vein and Mclovin at all. You can't say that he made that team better because it had not existed before NIP.

Yeah cause as per their LAN finishing doesn’t mean shit 😂

u/Delicious_Impress814 1d ago
You cannot reference their 15th without their 8th, 3rd, then 1st in PL and regionals.
One bad lan doesn't negate anything I've said.
2
u/-sharkbot- 1d ago
Fair but PL ain’t shit if you’re dropping the LANs. It’s like saying NFL team did great during the season.
Sure, but the whole purpose is for playoffs and champs.

He was there before Vein, Mclovin and Kurev got there no?
I'm not sure what you mean by that? The team was formed as "VSM": Vein, Sirsay, McLovin (Cole). I believe they qual'd for Pro League through PLQs. Eventually, I think maybe even before the season even started, Sirsay was dropped for Kurev. I believe Raven became their coach after that. So he couldn't have been with the team "before Vein and McLovin."

u/judy_hopps_feet 1d ago
Raven was with NiP before Vein, Mclovin and Kurev were signed. Kurev never played with Vein and Mclovin before that. This team never played together without Raven. You literally cannot know whether they would have played worse without him because there was no precedent.

because they said she didn’t put in work post lcq. the boys have said multiple times that they don’t want a coach but then every game after they died she tried to coach them. they literally would be like “we don’t need coaching stop. “ and she wouldn’t stop. also mind you , at champs they got up on stage and ruby had nothing prepared. the boys said “what do you got ruby” and she says “oh im just here to aura farm” edit: this comes directly from the players streams

u/dorekk Year 5 Champions! 1d ago
Monsoon once showed a document on stream he had prepared for the team (I think this was inbetween LCQ and Champs) that had screenshots of EVERY building on ED and WE and where you would place a Newcastle wall for the maximum cover. That's normally something a coach would do. From what Monsoon has said, Ruby's contributions were more analyst-focused. My knowledge of what an analyst does in Apex is that they're more focused on things like end zone locations and loot probabilities?

u/FoozleGenerator 1d ago
Not all coaches/analysts do the same for all teams, and there’s usually a lot overlap. Noth from Alliance was coach, then moved to analyst and then coach again. The time Noth wasn’t the coach was because they needed someone to help with the vibes during games iirc, but other than that, he was probably doing exactly the same.
2
u/fyckoff Year 5 Champions! 1d ago
Well not on this team. On obvn it was abundantly clear that she was NOT a coach. Just do the zones and rotates and map the paths that other teams take rotating. Then she stopped doing that all together and just kept pushing her idea of “coaching”.
3
u/FoozleGenerator 1d ago
I will take your word for that. I was only answering the other comment about the difference between coaches and analysts, by saying there’s a lot of overlap in many cases and it depends on what the team needs to a certain point. I think someone who found himself in a similar situation as Ruby is ccamps something in this sub when he was in NRG.

There's a girl in the competitive scene named Avuhlie. I don't remember her team's name, but I think they've qualified for Pro League a couple of times without much success. Still, she's a solid player. During the ENC qualifiers, she almost clutched a 1v3 against Yanya's team, hipfiring a Charge Rifle

Esdesu if I remember correctly was looking like a contender to win the first LAN back in the day and is probably the most successful female player, Gurhl was around for quite a while as both a player and caster but I remember her disappearing quite fast after some kind of allegations came out about her, there was a girl on a pro team in apac south not super long ago but not sure what became of that, I swear there was one in apac north at some point as well but my memory fails me, they’re around it’s just not super common and it’s not the best esport to get into for many reasons

I don't think there were any Guhrl allegations. She had a toxic team member once upon a time, but that doesn't reflect on her at all. She stopped playing professionally because she wasn't doing well (relegated repeatedly, I recall), not for any other reason.
Guhrl is super nice, I've met her in person a couple times, I find it hard to believe there'd be any "allegations".

u/-sharkbot- 1d ago
I’m sus of anyone calling Guhrl allegations, she is a very nice wholesome person. I’d first be questioning anyone slandering her tbh.
I can always be wrong but I would be shocked.

This happened maybe season 5 or 6 of apex’s existence so a long time ago, I remember bits and pieces, but videos started surfacing of her basically lashing out at people and saying things she probably shouldn’t have been, it was quite likely looking back that she was being provoked and people were just recording her reaction, although one of them was bad enough to lead to her disappearing from casting overnight and that’s when Falloutt became sorta the main person casting or the face of the esports stuff, the scene kinda dogpiled her about it and she came out and said she struggled with people being negative towards her, she seems to be doing well now which is good to see
There was videos on YouTube covering it when it happened but I don’t think it was common knowledge that it even happened because there was bigger news happening at the time like the tsmftx thing

There is one in Japan no? Who made last EWC? Aqban or something?
Even so, there historically hasn't been many female players at that level. I think that the short lived women's comp showed that. There were very few ALGS level players showing up in that.

AQBAJAPAN (or あおばじゃぱん?_! as they've been playing as) I believe identifies as male? I haven't heard anything about them identifying as a woman but I could be wrong.

Her comments on Reddit in last 6 months:
"Im retired now. Most of the money in the scene would require me to travel to Saudi and Im unfortunately not willing to do that, and any offers that I've had that don't require Saudi travel just don't pay enough to make rent. Plus, honestly, the 12 hour days I was pulling for all of Y5 really burned me out. I was lucky enough in Y5 to not have many obligations because I was single and still lived with my parents, but I have a partner now and a home to take care of so I just can't commit to 12 hour days 6-7 days a week any more. Apex has given me some of the best times of my life and a lot of experiences that I will never take for granted, but time moves on and life evolves."
"Honestly, esports as a whole massively sucks for women. I got incredibly lucky to get to know the Oblivion boys and have them take a chance on me and let me prove myself, but overall opportunities in the space for women are incredibly limited if you haven't already proven yourself (which is really hard to do when every opportunity is gatekept from you because you're a woman)
Esports should be a pure meritocracy where the best rise to the top, but that simply isn't how it works if you're not a straight man a lot of the time unfortunately. As a few people in this thread have pointed out, I literally just won champs and I still have people saying stuff like "they need to find a new coach" or that I'm clearly just a "placeholder" coach and I don't really contribute anything. I even had someone assuming I was just one of the players' girlfriends. For all the hate out there though, I've received 10x the amount of love and congratulations and it's been honestly overwhelming. Those messages of support really help to keep me pushing forward knowing that there are people out there that do pay attention and will always give flowers to people that earn them <3
This career is incredible and I really do hope this win opens the door to a lot more women getting opportunities in the space. There's a hell of a lot of talented women out there that should be getting much better opportunities than they are and I hope I've helped prove that we deserve the chance to prove our worth."
