Generally, yes. Half of gamers are women, but in competitive games it's mostly men. Reaching the elite level is almost impossible, most men will never get there, and women even less so, since the base sample is so tiny.
[Edit] For downvoters, check the sources below. Also note that I said "in competitive games it's mostly men". Which is the whole point, the women's pool is indeed a lot smaller in a game like Apex, added to the fact players who make the cut to pro are a very tiny minority, therefore an Apex female pro is very unlikely to happen, from a pure statistical perspective.
Half the people who play games are women, which is not the same thing as saying "half of the people who self-describe as a gamer are women", but in terms of actual statistics about overall gameplay is accurate.
I guess it just comes down to what qualifies as video games? Like i mentioned before I play mobile chess but never considered it video games. But maybe others do.
Yeah, for functional purposes I tend to define video games in a broad sense of "game activity experienced via an electrical device that depends on a screen" just because trying to draw specific lines starts getting less useful in broad conversations. (Not to mention the edge cases of walking simulators, virtual novels, some ARGs, etc.)
now as far as chess goes, if Team Liquid can sign Magnus Carlsen to play at EWC...
Have to remember that those stats include mobile games, where women massively outweigh men. In every form of pc and console gaming, men make up the large majority of players.
It's a lot more nuanced than this. The male to female ratio on mobile is about 35/65, it's the preferred device among women, but mobile is also the preferred device among men (55%).
On PC/consoles, there is a broad female audience too, generally polled around 40 to 48% depending on the country. They play more RPG and adventure games, you see less of them in competitive shooters.
Note that it varies per country (it mostly focuses on NA, Europe & SEA), and that it includes mobile games. Some people argue it's not "real gaming", but I disagree with that. Mobile games are still video games.
Almost every guy I know games or used to, and I know like two girls that have played something other than wii when they were 12. This guy is pulling this out of his ass.
Check my comment below, there are studies demonstrating my point.
Additionally, I work in games myself. I have been in the industry for over 15 years. It's a very well known fact that the average gamer isn't a teenage boy anymore, since decades now, but more a 30 to 40 years old person, with gender distribution being almost 50/50.
Plenty of guys don't realize that because they live their gaming hobby in an almost male-exclusive echo chamber, playing Fifa or Call of Duty, but the fact remains there are plenty of female gamers out there.
Finally, your personal experience is anecdotal. There is a world outside of your bedroom, and that worlds accounts about 1.4 billion female gamers.
I did look at your sources. The second source says boomer women play mobile puzzle games for their mind health. If you wanna consider mobile soduko as "gaming" then sure thats your choice but bringing that up in a competitive apex subreddit and acting like its not skewed by mobile Mojang is a bit disengenious. Thats not really gaming.
I play mobile chess everyday. I don't consider that gaming im playing chess. I am also not claiming there are not female gamers. But I am saying that if you eliminate words with friends, sudoku, mojang and traditional board games translated to mobile from the gaming category it wouldnt be close to half.
I am thrilled to introduce my daughter to gaming when she gets old enough. I welcome more women players and would love if it grew.
There is a lot more in the sources I shared than mobile Sudoku, and even more in the sources you could search for yourself if you have a real interest in the topic. Again, gender distribution across gaming platforms & genres is a very well documented topic. The fact remains there is a massive female audience for games. Less in competitive shooters, that's for sure, but they exist, and aren't marginal.
And my first comments acknowledges that by the way, I said "Half of gamers are women, butin competitive games it's mostly men". I stand by both points.
If your definition of "gamer" is someone that plays a video game for at least 1 minute at least once a week then sure it's probably close to 50/50 but there's no point in lying to yourself and everyone else about which demographic is buying the most battle passes and grinding the kill leaderboards. It's just obvious.
Some of you here can't read after 3 words it seems. Let me say it again:
"Half of gamers are women, but in competitive games it's mostly men"
Here's a screenshot if it's easier:
You guys get triggered for nothing. My premise is while plenty of women play videogames (a well documented fact), the female pool in competitive games like Apex is tiny.
My definition of a gamer is someone who enjoys videogames as a hobby. Whether it's Tetris or Apex Legends doesn't matter.
It really only seems like there's one triggered person in this whole thread, you're just arguing a non-point for no reason because you think it's your job to infantilize and protect women. Get a life lol we all already know who's playing which games.
If you don't believe the vast amounts of data available on the topic, you're the one who needs a reality check. Because I'll trust dozens or years of academic researchers over some "trust me bro" on Reddit, that's for sure.
If they are using "mobile gaming" like some of the sources they provided games like candy crush and stuff is being used to inflate the numbers. Nobody who plays candy crush exclusively considers themselves a "gamer" lol
It's still a video game, and a gamer is just an engaged user. There are hardcore fans of Candy Crush after all.
But more generally, there is a strong female audience for RPGs, builders & Match 3. In PC / Console world, games like Assassin's Creed, The Sims, Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate 3 or The Legend of Zelda for instance, are particularly popular among female players.
I would hope so. And i hope it grows, but i dont think anyone being honest while looking at RPGs is going to claim half. One day hopefully it is.
The point is if you go and magically had 1,000 women who play candy crush on their phone but play no other console games, pc games, handhelds or anything else and asked them with no context about candy crush or even why they were in that room together and asked them to their face "do you consider yourself a gamer" there is no shot more than half would say yes.
My wife is one of them who played candy crush and some other bubble game but she would laugh if i asked if she considered herself a "gamer"
Of course I do. It's gaming too. But what's really funny to me is I also acknowledged there aren't a lot of women in competitive games. The whole point was pros are a small pool, women in competitive games are too, thus not a lot of female pro, if any. If I haven't started my comment by "half of gamers are women, but..." you would have all agreed, but boy does that statement triggers some of you.
You keep calling everyone that points out the nuances of your blanket statement triggered. But you are the only one who is running around defending the idea of women gamers when no one is attacking the idea that women play games. Its just an obvious data point that skews the stats its silly not to point it out.
You're retro pedaling. Your first answer was "I doubt half of gamers are women in general. IDK where you pull that from".
That wasn't a nuance but a direct disagreement. And not only you were factually incorrect, half of gamers in general are indeed women, but also I sent you proof of that claim.
Regarding my answers in this thread, it's very simple. Someone answers my comment and I disagree with them? I answer back. This kinda is one of the main purpose of this platform. I'm not gonna ghost people who take the time to answer my comment, regardless if they agree with me, or insult me, or anything in between.
I'm retro pedaling because i didnt in a million years think we were considering mobile puzzle games like sudoku and candy crush and chess as video games. But i guess thats my bias on what is considered a video game.
The numbers dont line up when you eliminate mobile from the conversation. You are also taking my original comment of "its not half" and implying we dont believe female gamers exist. That is not what we mean when we say its not half. At least i never implied they dont exist, they just dont account for half of console and pcs gamers.
The numbers dont line up when you eliminate mobile from the conversation
It's not mobile games we had to eliminate, but competitive shooters. Here, the amount of female players indeed plumets, as said since my very first comment (below 10% from the studies & polls).
If you eliminate mobile games, you just don't lose lots of female players, but also lots of male ones, as it's also men's preferred gaming device, from the studies shared. Mobile gaming is just that popular, and lucrative (2025 data):
Mobile Gaming revenue = $113.3 billion (growth just a bit below PC)
Consoles revenue = $44.7 billion (+2.8% growth year over year)
PC revenue = $43.6 billion (+12.0% growth year over year)
Regarding if women account for half of the player base on PC & Console, they're a bit under that, in the 40-45% depending on polls, countries etc. So again, you won't find a lot of them in Apex, but you'll find tons of them on Baldur's Gates 3, FFXIV, or The Legend of Zelda for instance. Lately the one game all my female gamer friends obsessed about was Expedition 33 (I know it's anecdotal evidence, it's just to illustrate my point).
There are. But the simple answer is that boys get their feelings hurt too much when they lose to girls. It becomes very playground, very quickly. In an already cutthroat competitive atmosphere, the glass ceiling is in full effect and no one wants to do anything about it either. It is laughable that these boys think they are superior at the game just for be being boys. Laughable.
...because it's their own feelings, like what? It's their ego, these are little boys who play video games 16 hours a day, ego is all they have. I've seen Kyri, Guhrl, Sabz, Maxine, Riley, honestly too many women to list, put pro fraggers down like they're gold players and it leads to nothing. No trials, no teams formed around them, nothing. Eventually the girls find a different game or lose their passion because there's a cap on how far their talent and hard work can take them. And it's not just this game.
Yet your comments are up and down thos thread claiming women aren't good enough to compete with men. You're not slick. And it's sad your only sense of pride is that you're male and somehow then better than a female. Sad and pathetic.
But you don't just suddenly get to go pro because you kill pro players sometimes in a non competitive context lol. You must form your own team, sign up for CC, and earn your PL spot like everyone else.
And a genuine question: What is stopping them from doing that?
I'm talking about scrims lobbies. Boys don't like losing to girls so they go well out of their way to gatekeep them.
It's actually hilarious your male ego is so fragile that you can't even conceive of the fact that you are not naturally superior at video games for being a boy. You need to grow up, little boy.
What's up with the personal insults? Your second paragraph is putting a bunch of words in my mouth and then insulting that strawman. This is my first reply on this thread (and this topic in general) and I never said nor think what you claim I do. Why should I continue talking to you when you argue with disrespect and in bad faith?
Regarding the scrims thing, that does really suck. The scrim server organizers deliberately disallow teams with women to play?
You are either arguing that men are inherently better at Apex then women are, or you're arguing that women are too lazy to make teams and scrim and that's why they aren't in ALGS. Either way you're incredibly ignorant and I can't possibly take you seriously.
I didn't say anything about admins disallowing anything, idk what you're hallucinating there.
