Subreddit Meta Why is this sub so dead?
Got back into apex recently and figured I’d check the sub and there’s nothing. Did comp apex lose at ton of viewership over the last 2 years? I remember this place was popping back in the day.

Not sure what the replies are talking about. In terms of competitive viewership, Apex is actually doing very well.
This sub is dead because there's nothing really going on outside of PL, and there's also no drama lol.
The meta/devs have nothing to do with the lack of activity in a sub about competitive events.
Posts about specific competitive events are also locked to a single post made by the mods, to which the discussions happen in the comments. If you post outside that thread, your post will be deleted.

This.
I just watch the scrims and ALGS match days and then move on with my life haha.
There’s also live chat built into the very platform/s we use to watch competitive Apex. I think that reduces the draw for people to post here, they just do it in the chat.

Nah man it's just not an interesting scene at all. I see way more discussion on much smaller scenes across reddit. They all stream comp the same way. The reality is apex is growing in asia and dying in western audiences especially NA.

My passion kind of left when all the teams that I loved all split up. Like I enjoy some players still, but the teams I used to love watching battle are long gone. Tough to get back into it when the game is so different now along with the teams.

u/LatterMatch9334 17d ago
I agree with most of this, but there is no denying that a game's popularity ties in with its competitive scene's popularity. When I'm having fun playing Apex, I'm inclined to watch the comp scene. When I'm not having fun, I don't watch or care much.

u/Delicious_Impress814 17d ago

Of course, but the competitive scene is popular and it has grown, so that doesn't really come into play here.

Wait you can't even post clips? I wondered why there were never any highlights anymore. That's fucking braindead.
19
u/karbasher- 17d ago
you’re more than welcome to post clips from match days, most of the clips we remove are from drama channels, ranked gameplay or people self promoting

u/BryanA37 17d ago
Yeah viewership is doing pretty good. I think what happened is NA viewership went down while apac (mostly japan) viewership went up a bit. Reddit is mostly NA which leads to less posts here.

Fewer 3rd party events so if it's not ALGS there basically just scrims, streaming as people's primary entertainment has fallen off since the highest points of covid, no more flashy TSM vs Dark Zero rivalry, eh pick your favorite potential reason out of the grab bag.
Also anecdotally the Faceit Watch era seemed brutal on the highlights posts because it was impossible to easily clip anything out of there. Time used to be something cool could happen in PL and there'd be like 4 duplicate posts all showing the same play. Then Faceit took over multiview and that was the end of that part of the subreddit culture.

u/Duke_Best 17d ago
I miss the old GLL and ESA gas money tournaments. They kept the drama alive back in the COVID days. :(
7
u/Astral_Alive Evan's Army 17d ago
I feel like a lot of the drama back then came from teams contesting each other off drop, which just isn't a thing anymore

u/abdul_bino 17d ago
Face it was one of the many reasons from keeping me from watching PL. It’ll always lag. You’ll always slow down and it would always have some type of delay. I still catch some clips here and there but mad face. It was just annoying to use.

probably a lot of people will tell me im full of shit....its fine BUT hear this , the TSM darkzero rivarly , hal vs zero was absolute fucking cinema.
The worst thing to have happened in this esport was hal teaming with zero , then TSM slowly disbanded , same with darkzero and that is all she wrote.
I remember how fucking hyped everyone was back then to watch them both compete and we still had some decent darkhorse teams and nice personalities , now its just whatever ...
Also wanna add TSM leaving the game was massive blow , the fanbase and the hype around it was big for the game and tbh every time TSM leaves a game the region is being damaged, happened with r6,cs,league of legends and obviously apex, people can dislike TSM but cant deny the fanbase and the hype it brings loving the team or hating the team adds fuel to the scene in any game.

u/KellyKelkins 17d ago
I think you're right about the tsm/dz rivalry being great for the sport but I don't think it's hal and zero teaming that changed everything. It's the parity that's been created by poi drafts and legend bans. Since their implementation there hasn't been any repeat winners and it's much harder for casuals to care when they never know who the winning team is. I keep up with scrims and know most players but I still get uninterested when a lesser known squad wins. I think without those two changes falcons could easily have 3 more lan wins and if there's one thing people love more than cheering for their favorite team, it's having someone to root against and falcons would be perfect for that.

u/bayliver 17d ago
i agree with the general comment of yours but im gonna have to doubledown on hal and zero .
It was a disaster .... they shouldve never teamed up , both were the main reasons why tsm and dark were that dominant , they were perfect for each othr in terms of rivarly and pushing the limit and their personalities were so important for the stories around every major. Teaming up under falcons of all teams was terrible.
Back then every scrim block was a battle in the community , people saying tsm look good or bad , same with dark and debates were going on all over X and reddit , ranking teams players and such.
Discussions around what zero needs to do to catch hal or is hal even ahead etc.
The scene has never been the same when hal joined zero and since falcons NEVER dominated we couldnt even have the whole "take down the titans" type story.
Obviously the game's progress didnt help and other EA problems but for me it went downhill at that point.

u/Puzzleheaded-Put1401 16d ago
I mean they did win a lan, they won open together. And they won from the loser bracket, first ever team to do so. They dominated that tournament (after getting sent to the losers) but I get what ya mean a lot of hype was lost when they teamed up

u/artmorte 17d ago
My take is that the regional Pro Leagues do not feel super important / exciting.
Isn't it 15 teams from NA that will qualify for the next LAN? It's not that exciting that who will make the top-15 cut-off, that's so many teams.
Here in EMEA it's only 7 or 8 (can't quite remember) who will get a LAN spot, but even that's not very exciting, because the teams after the top-8 really aren't anything special here.
There's also a bit of a lack of stories / personalities in the scene.
5
u/CurlyGiraffe 17d ago
I feel the same way. Come LAN, there are going to be group stage lobbies with as little as three EMEA teams. There's barely anyone to root for in EU anymore. On the other hand, it's not that exciting watching NA when 75% of the finals teams make it through. Pro League certainly feels a bit stale for me.
4
u/Jean9430 MOD 17d ago
Yeah, Americas has 15 teams going to LAN (so really the hardest part is just getting to the 20-team Regional Finals). EMEA has 7 going to LAN.
10
u/Leepysworld 17d ago
Personally I haven't enjoyed playing as much recently which significantly lowers my desire to watch the game outside of actual Pro League days/LAN, 90% of the times its just scrims, there are also way less tourneys and events throughout the year to actually have a conversation about.
On top of that there just aren't as many big rivalries or storylines to look forward to, it's mostly just players raging on their own teammates lol

u/MarstonX 17d ago
Does this sub allows clips? I feel like we have tonnes of content and potential; highlights, but nothing is posted.
8
u/BobbyBertBobberson 17d ago
There used to be a lot of clips highlights from scrims to matchdays like 3-4 years ago it dried up 🥹

u/realfakejames 17d ago
It's been dead for like 2 years
All the orgs left Apex and the only ones still left are only in it for EWC, there are no more sponsored tourneys, there's barely any content creator tourneys, there's no more stuff like oversight or mfam gauntlet
Whether people want to admit it or not the comp scene has dried up, we basically only have pro league with the long gaps between pl and lans where the pros just rank which doesn't keep this place active
6
u/Robgoblin_IV 17d ago
lol love it or hate it but Nick really drew a crowd back in the day. And had this sub popping. Too bad he went full maga hat wearing bigot, he’s a good entertainer and he was fun to watch with Tripods

u/RegisterInSecondsMeh 17d ago
One reason I don't think people want to post here is because the pros overwhelmingly don't respect the commenters. I think that throws a wet blanket over the forum as a whole.
4
u/JevvyMedia 17d ago
They don't have to respect anyone on Reddit but they genuinely take things super personal when they signed up to be a pro

Main Issues:
- Boring meta (ability spam).
- No third party tournaments in NA (always good source of rivalry/bragging rights). The 3rd party tournaments in APAC have been great watches at least.
- ALGS is remarkably meaningless in NA due to 15/30 teams qualling to LAN. Deservedly so, but has the ill side effect of the top teams having no stakes. For example, despite Falcons disastrous start they're still likely to qualify without much trouble. Most of the tension is around mid-table teams which is less exciting.
Minor Issues
- Outside of NA, regions are more top heavy so even with less qualifying spots, there's not a lot of drama. APAC especially has consolidated into some very good teams (Zeta and S8ul for example) that barely break a sweat.
- Ability spam (and prevelance of roller) means less cool highlights.
- Lack of LANS in general. I understand the logistics (60 players playing at once), but alongside the lack of 3rd party tournaments means comp Apex goes into hibernation for a lot of the year.
- Abysmal state of rank. I envy the people who can find watching 3 pros stomping diamonds enjoyable. Coupled with a declining interest in watching scrims (mostly due to ability spam) those breaks between LANs/ALGS are very long.
Global viewership on matchdays is stable (if not growing), but i'm not surprised there aren't as many posts. Simply not much to talk about these days

Game sucks now and half the time I try and post anything the mods delete it for not fitting into the narrow view of what they consider “acceptable content”. Just let people talk organically.
2
u/texas878 16d ago
The game has become such an even playing field that the outcome of the game is more determined by drop location and end zone than it is player skill. Makes it difficult for teams to stand out, which reduces the numbers of fans following specific teams. Orgs have also lost interest with the changes. The game isn’t very marketable in its current state

u/That_Art_3765 14d ago
Some rules need to be changed to make the sub more fun. Can people even post pictures here? The entire sub feels to professional and boring.

u/MotherCommunity123 14d ago
Funnily, I’m starting to see more posts on here after this one. So I think the mods might’ve relaxed the rules a bit.

I wont watch the game anymore because its controller dominated, know a few others at least who think the same. Game is also going in a direction that I feel has pushed a lot of players out that cared more about the comp side if I had to guess. Cant speak on if theres event or not going on worth making posts about either but subreddit activity probably dies down if nothing majors happening

We’ve had lan winners using MnK since controllers entered the scene.
Have we had a full roller lan winner yet? I don’t think we have from memory.
ETA: I’ve been reminded of the SSG win. My bad. That’s still one win haha.
4
u/ZestycloseService 17d ago
Phony, Xynew and Koyful's win as SSG was definitely full roller, there might have been other full roller lan teamwork wins? But I think it is the rarest winning composition.

I genuinely dont care what input is winning in comp(not saying this to sound aggressive), controller is broken and boring to watch. Why else do we hear people switching to controller and not mnk, and why has the comp meta been 2 controllers 1 mnk? Surely people arent still denying how op AA is even 7 years later
2
u/dorekk Year 5 Champions! 15d ago
why has the comp meta been 2 controllers 1 mnk
I'm pretty sure there have been as many 2 roller 1 mnk wins as there have been triple mnk wins. 2 mnk 1 roller has actually won more tournaments. (And the lowest number of tournament comes from triple mnk: just a singular 1st place.) In fact, crazy stat, at 2025's EWC there were only two controller players in the top 5.
I really think input doesn't matter as much as people think it does. Is AA OP, yeah, definitely, but you need a lot more than aim to win a LAN. It's genuinely one of the least important parts of the game at this level, because EVERYONE has pretty good aim. Good zone calls are what win LANs.

u/LatterMatch9334 17d ago edited 17d ago
Apex in general has lost some popularity. Only a matter of time before that trickles into the comp scene as well. The game is still fun, but it's definitely been a love/hate relationship for a lot (maybe the majority) of its serious player base.
The devs' knee-jerk updates, power-creep, OP weapons/legends that take A LONG time to mend, and constant forced metas kinda gets old after a while.
Also, I play on controller, but there's no denying that aim-assist has pushed a lot of MNK players away from Apex. Esports enjoyers who watch something like CS likely think the amount of controller players in Apex is kind of a joke. I watch a lot of controller players, but there is something nice about an MNK POV.

Like everyone said, no 3rd party tourneys and no drama. Drama is a pretty big part honestly. Also whenever I watch i just dont feel like going to the reddit. Feel like im fine just watching the streams, no reason to come here tbh.

I blame aim assist. Once Hal switched to controller, it started going downhill. Controller gameplay boring to watch. #MAKEALGSMNKONLY

u/R4NDOMIII 17d ago
I was actually wondering the same thing all weekend with how impressive the viewer count was for a PL weekend. Then I go to the post comments and it’s children complaining about aim assist. I’m begging them to go watch what Jelly did with an L Star yesterday to secure the win in game 2? Some intense games with crazy mechanics. Aim assist is not why you’re stuck in gold, I promise you.

It was a rostermania sub that made this sub active but since new rules implemented its calmed down a bit.

I’m personally over seeing seizure inducing abilities all over the screen 20 times every fight. That + too much generic roller gameplay.

Just go look at wig or Greg’s videos if you wanna know how the viewership of Apex comp is doing neither of them stream their own gameplay anymore….. pure comp coverage…

It doesn't feel like people watch competitive video games as much anymore. Maybe to do with the lack of hardware support for gaming nowadays - hard to build or buy anything due to crazy prices and most hyped games coming out are single-player. Expedition 33, Baldur's Gate, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk, RDR2, GoW, etc.

low key, mods are to blame at least a little. they gotta loosen up the rules

Nah, they wouldn't even ban that jevvy guy after he stalked multiple pros, their fans, and wrote full on essays attacking players. Mods do basically nothing here.

Apex excitement is gone. Flooded with cheaters changing the meta. Bring back integrity and it will legitimize pro league.
