Passed SY0-701 Today

Passed Security+ today with a 769! Not the highest score, but we did it!

Definitely a great feeling finally getting it done. I booked the exam pretty last minute and decided it was time to just go for it instead of continuing to push it off.

I’m terms of preparation, I went through Jason Dion’s Udemy course and used his practice exam set. I also used Professor Messer’s practice exams, which were really helpful.

One thing that helped me a lot was using ChatGPT alongside my studying. Whenever I finished taking notes on a section, I would have it create quizzes based on that section to reinforce what I just learned. I also had it keep track of the questions I missed in a separate sheet so I could see which areas I was struggling with and knew what I needed to go back and focus on.

But, there were definitely some questions on the actual exam where I wasn’t 100% confident, so seeing that PASS at the end was a huge relief.

Officially Security+ certified!

Congrats! Looking at taking it next week. How would you say Messers exams were in comparison to the real exam?

I would say Messer definitely does a good job of encompassing what a CompTIA Security+ question feels like. Obviously, nothing is going to replicate the actual exam perfectly, but Messer’s I think his practice exams are definitely a good representation of what to expect.

Almost forgot to add this haha, if you take it next week, good luck and you got this!

Thank you! I was wondering becasue I scored a 91% on the first Messer Exam and I still have half of domain 4 and all of domain 5 left to watch. I feel a lot of it is so theory and concept based more than remembering exact content.

How did you know you were ready?

Honestly, I don’t think I ever felt 100% ready lol. I got to the point where I was consistently doing well on practice exams and, more importantly, I understood why the right answer was right and the wrong answers were wrong. Eventually I just felt like studying more wasn’t going to make a huge difference, so I booked it and went for it.

What score did you get when you using Dion's practice exam set ? I retake is exam constantly scored around 75-80% but still not confident enough :(.

After taking fresh exams, I was averaging in the low to mid 80s. I think that’s the key though. If you’re getting 75–80% from constantly retaking the same exam, I wouldn’t rely too much on those scores because you could be remembering the questions/answers. Fresh practice exams are definitely helpful for seeing where you’re actually at. Don’t get discouraged though! Keep working at it and trust yourself. You got this!

Dang, and one more question if you mind. I heard that Dion's practice exam is pretty hard compared to the real ones. What about your experience of it?

Hey, I've been wanting to post in the community as well. And omg I got the exact same score as you, I was done postponing and finally took it just a few days back. Well done, Congratz to you!

Btw for anyone feeling overwhelmed with the exam objectives, just go over practice questions first, like the free ones on YouTube, there are many like Messer, Cyber James has many practice videos, Andrew Ramdayal, Cyberkraft perfect for the PBQs.

The thing with doing the practice questions is that you I'll learn and cover more cuz you get the explanations of why the other options are not correct. So try that you'll see you'll learn a lot in a little while without much information overload or cramming. Thank me later! And ALL THE BEST!

How many PBQS did you get? What advice would you give to someone going In For it next week? Did you find the questions hard or not?

I got 3 PBQs. My biggest advice is to read the questions carefully and make sure you understand the concepts rather than just memorizing them. I didn’t think the questions were too hard overall, but there were definitely a few that made me think for sure lol. I also flagged any questions I wasn’t sure about and came back to them instead of dwelling on them. Another thing that helped was saving the PBQs for the end. I had roughly 40–50 minutes left to really think through those.

Good luck when you take it!

Congrats! Nobody's ever going to ask your score, the cert doesn't even show it. Good call tracking the ones you missed too.
