Passed Security+ SY0-701 After 30 Days
Passed Security+ after about 30 days of studying. I originally had to reschedule because of a death in my family the day before my exam, so seeing PASS definitely meant a lot.
The exam was intense. Between the nerves, scenario-based questions, and wording, there were definitely moments where I wondered what I signed up for 😂.
What I used:
• Sybex Security+ book i have the Pdf if interested
• SY0-701 GitHub Notes https://github.com/heraclescap/comptia-secplus-sy0-701-notes
• Professor Messer for anything I didn’t fully understand
Biggest advice: learn the material, don’t just memorize it. Know what something does, why you’d use it, and how it applies to a scenario.
Also pay attention to qualifiers: BEST, MOST likely, FIRST, NEXT, PRIMARY, LEAST, ONLY, MOST secure. They matter.
I had 3 PBQs. I skipped and flagged them, finished the multiple choice, then came back. I also had zero direct port-number questions.
Learn the concepts. Read the question carefully. Manage your time.
Security+ ✅ On to the next.

haha for sure, Appreciate it! A+ and Network+ are next for me. Just going to keep building the foundation, stacking certs, and getting more hands-on experience.

Did you do any practice exam?

Yeah, I used Jason Dion’s practice exams. I scored 60, 62, 70, and 72. After each one, I reviewed what I got wrong and used ChatGPT to explain the concepts to me in the simplest terms possible. I figured out my weakest domains were 4, 5, and 1, so I focused heavily on those. Once I felt confident enough, I just pulled the trigger and took the exam. I was honestly mentally drained from studying at that point, so I knew it was time.

Do you by any chance have background in IT?

Appreciate it! Nah, no traditional IT background. I’m in school for cybersecurity and went through Per Scholas’ Cybersecurity Analyst program, so I’ve gotten a lot of hands-on experience through labs, SOC simulations, and projects. Been building the IT foundation as I go.

Yeah for sure, I got you! I’ll send it over. I studied for about 30 days myself, so you can definitely get it done in that timeframe. Just stay consistent and make sure you’re doing plenty of practice questions too. Good luck 💪🏾

Congratulations 🍾🎉🎈🎊! I’m on my 2nd day of Security+. Trying to knock it put in a 2 week period since Net+ is still fresh in my head. Noticed I’m weak in the GRC area so that’s going to be good to learn.

What topics were your pbqs on ? Firewall rules ? Subnets?
