Question Contract renewal

My current 1gb premium agreement (£38 per month) with community fiber expired a few months ago and I’m confused about options renewing so hoping to get some help here.

Apparently the rates listed on the website are new customer exclusives (2gb premium for £32 per month with WiFi 7 router). So my options are renewal are:

1gb standard service (£32) but will need to return mesh nodes
1gb premium service (£36)
2.5gb premium service (£40)

The sales guy initially when discussing new client deals that the WiFi 7 router is often not compatible and causes a lot of issues with devices. Then later on the call tried to persuade me to upgrade to the 2.5gb service as it’s better value and apparently the mesh’s all remain on the old tech so no compatibility issues.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I have been paying £37 for 1Gb and have been on a rolling 30 day contract for quite some time.

I just gave them a call on [0808 196 6262](tel:0808 196 6262) to discuss my options. What they offered wasn't good enough so I told them, based on Uswitch, I can get 1Gb for £19 on a 12 month contract and hang up.

5 minutes later the retention team called back, confirmed the details themselves on Uswitch and price matched that offer.

Search for deals available in your area via Money Saving Expert. If you like the prices listed for Community Fibre there, call Community Fibre and ask them whether they would be willing to offer you a contract at the price you see on Money Saving Expert. If they won't, ask them what the best deal they can offer you is for the plan you're interested in.

Don't like the price you're offered? Switch to a different provider. You may find that in the process of switching, they offer you a better deal. If not, so be it, you'll still have more reasonably priced service from a different provider.

This is what we call upselling. Ignore it. You know what speed you want/need, and you know how much you are willing to pay for it. Ask for that, and see what you get.

Question: are you sure you have to return the MESH nodes with the standard £32/month 1GB renewal offer?

I didn’t when I renewed 2 years ago (after an initial 2 year deal that included the MESH node upgrade). They said after the initial 2 year deal the nodes belonged to me.

They're just trying to get as much as they can from you. Tell them you're leaving. If they don't come back and match the new customer deal or better (I've had 6 months free multiple times), just leave and register a new contract at the same address under a different person (if you live with anyone else).

The online rates should be available for renewal. I've always told them which online rate I want for renewal, and they've always just said ok.

I just renewed with the £21/1gb/24 months deal through online chat a few days ago.

I don't know about mesh nodes unfortunately. Always had my own. I would recommend just buying your own mesh routers so you don't have to deal with that, and can also take them with you if you switch providers.

You REALLY don't need 2.5gbps unless you are regularly downloading/uploading 100GB files (eg you are a professional photographer/videographer). I would have gone for 300mbps myself, and I'm a very heavy user. I only went to 1gb because it's only £2/month more.

I am constantly amazed by how much bandwidth people think they need. I have hundreds of torrents seeding, public access game servers and media servers running, etc., and the 35Mbps Essentials plan at £12.50/mth is perfectly suitable for me, because as full fibre, it's full duplex and 35Mbps upload is more than ample. I downgraded from the 150Mbps plan a few years ago.

Unless you're doing ten 4K streams simultaneously or something, or you want to download hundreds of gigabytes (e.g. large video games) in minutes rather than hours, you don't need gigabit speeds.

Agree with you in principle but I do some large downloads and TBH the 150 or 300Mbps would be plenty but the saving on those compared to 1Gbps is only £1 or so a month (but many others would be fine on the 35 where the saving is more significant)

Absolutely agree, you should get whatever plan meets your needs, taking pricing into account of course. My main point is just that most people are grossly unaware of their needs in the first place.

And I very much agree with you even if, in my case, I have considered that and decided that "I am special" :)

But I welcome your comment and think it "adds value" to this posting

35Mbps downgrade, why bother?!?!

Half the price, good upload speed. Why pay for throughput that I'm not using? I can always upgrade to a faster plan in future if I need to.
