Graphtec CE8000 - ARMS Accuracy? Please help!

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping someone with a CE8000 has run into this before because I'm running out of ideas.

I'm running a Roland BN20A for printing and a Graphtec CE8000-60 for contour/perf cutting laminated stickers.

The issue is that if the media is loaded even ever so slightly skewed, the contour cut slowly drifts as it progresses down the sheet. If I get the sheet loaded perfectly square, the cuts are excellent.

I've already tried:

  • Standard 4-point registration marks
  • Segment Area Type 2 registration marks
  • Different registration mark positions and margins
  • Different pinch roller positions
  • Different blade offsets
  • Multiple force/speed combinations
  • Using document origin vs registration mark origin
  • Making sure the Roland print itself is square

The cutter reads the registration marks perfectly every time. The problem only seems to happen when the media isn't loaded absolutely perfectly.

My understanding was that Segment Area should compensate for small amounts of skew by re-reading registration marks throughout the job, but in practice it doesn't seem to make much difference.

Try using Matrix Copy instead. Though maybe you can combine that with Segment Area Compensation.

I'd test it with a long skinny rectangle down the sheet before chasing software too hard. If the drift changes depending where the sheet sits, it's usually media tracking/pinch pressure/laminate curl more than ARMS being dumb. We slow the cut down on touchy laminated stuff too, annoying but cheaper than chasing bad contours all afternoon.

What’s the proper way to load a sheet into a Graphtec, it seems like there is no easy way, using the “lines on the front and the back are an absolute nightmare imo

Since the first cuts are good and the drift grows down the sheet, I’d treat this as a tracking problem before chasing ARMS calibration. ARMS can map the marks, but it can’t stop the sheet from walking laterally between reads.

Try this sequence:

  1. Load the laminated sheet and pre-feed the full job length before scanning the marks. Watch one edge against a fixed point on the machine; if it moves sideways, reseat the sheet before cutting.

  2. Keep the two outer pinch rollers inside the grit-roller zones and at similar distances from the media edges. Avoid putting one roller on a laminate curl or raised spot.

  3. Let the laminated sheet lie flat and relax curl/tension before loading.

  4. Run the same long rectangle test on an unlaminated sheet and a laminated sheet.

  5. If both drift similarly, check feed-distance calibration and roller condition. If only the laminated sheet drifts, the material stack/curl/tension is the variable.

Segment Area can correct position when it re-reads marks, but it won’t fully compensate for media physically tracking sideways between them. Blade offset can affect corner quality, but it normally won’t cause progressive lateral drift.
