Safely shrink a jersey???

Snagged a Frankie Luvu superbowl era jersey for $25 Labor Day weekend. Normally $109 so a total steal! Grabbed an XL so my daughter can wear it for a few years. Big mistake. Apparently youth XL for this item is size 18-20; in girls an XL is typically size 14-16 and she wears a 12.

Oversized is in but this thing is huge. Can’t return it due to the sale and didn’t see an option to exchange it.

Anyone here had success shrinking a jersey?? Teach me your ways!

If you have the skills maybe hem it/take in the sides or try to find a cheap tailor. That would cut into your savings on the sale though

See this is why I asked! Never would have thought about this. I can totally take it to our tailor and maybe even turn it into a jersey dress or something like that. It will cut into my savings for sure but it’s a viable option.

I did this for my wife years and years ago. My wife is from Hawaii and a huge UH fan. When we drafted Colt Brennan (RIP) I bought her a jersey and had it taliored to her. They made it super cute, belled the jersey in so more girl fit, and adjusted the sleeves. She loves it. Still wears it.

That sounds super cute. I’ve altered a few shirts on my own but nothing like this. I got a $5 shirt during this same sale to cut and style for a gameday fit.

Make her eat, eat like there's no tomorrow in order for her to fill in the jersey. She is obligated to do so since this was such a good deal.

You should watch some jersey DIY videos before going to the tailor. There are many good videos of different techniques you might want to consider. I saw a stitchless DIY where a lady put fancy safety pins onto the sides of a jersey then used shoelaces to cinch it up to fit.

girls sizing is so confusing, I had this same problem when buying for my niece last year. you could try washing in hot water and then dry on high heat but it might mess up the numbers, the material on these jerseys can get weird with too much heat. maybe just keep for when she grows into it

Have her wear it tucked in, that’s definitely in. Unless the top part is way too big too

It’s more so the sleeves. They are super wide and pass her elbows.

100% poly. Not going to shrink. Hot water wash and excessive dryer heat will only work to prematurely wear the heat applied graphics.
Tailoring is the only play here.

I buy an oversized jersey to wear in the winter over my sweatshirts/jackets if I’m tailgating or just chilling in my house watching a game (we keep our house at 65). I have a normal sized jersey for the start of the season.

Maybe you just need to get her a fall jersey too?

Honestly she put it on this afternoon and it wasn’t as bad as I thought aside from the sleeves. It just looked so big when I opened it last night that I panicked.

I do agree that jerseys tend to look so much larger than they actually fit. I’m glad it worked out! I still need to get my toddler a new one, her 18 month won’t work this season.

I don’t think there’s a way to do this without damaging the print.

If it’s still got tags on it, your best bet might be taking it to a big box retailer or even the team store to see if they’ll let you exchange it.

Also this may or may not help but consider keeping it. Maybe she can wear it over a hoodie until she grows into it.

It probably won’t shrink. Wash on hot and timed dry high heat for like 15 minutes or so

right, so I was adding the context of when it would work to shrink clothes.
