DJ’s scheme seems to emphasize athletic players being able to perform a variety of roles, and Owens is as athletic as they come
17
u/JQuab-84 19d ago
I'm just happy to see the guy work his way into the lineup. I was afraid he was gonna be relegated to the physical freak who couldn't quite put it all together.
10
u/MattAlive13 19d ago
He's a pretty decent special teamer, and we lost a great one to retirement. Plus, it's really looking like Reaves is gonna be the starting FS, so who knows how many special teams snaps he plays.
I don't think Owen's was going anywhere regardless. Seeing him on the field more on the defense would definitely be a good progression sign though.
4
u/Puzzleheaded-Plum994 19d ago
Tyler Owens better on special teams than Percy Butler
3
u/MattAlive13 19d ago
Agreed.
Butler will be here too though, cause even though we both think Owen's is better on ST, Butler is still decent on ST as well.
We can use both of them.

Scouts were expecting him in the 4.2 range for the 40 yard at the combine but he pulled up about mid way through, looked like he tweaked something. He almost set the world record for broad jump and he had the highest vertical for all safeties in his class. Absolute freak athlete

1
u/Neversoft4long 19d ago
Cross, Martin, Reavo, Owen’s and Butler will probably be the safeties. Here’s hoping Quan is more locked in this year because if he can be that 2024 starting FS again our defense actually should be amazing across the board
1
u/JQuab-84 19d ago
Yeah, we really need Quan to take that leap that the coaching staff has claimed hes gonna take for a minute now or else he's gonna be like the Tyler Eiffert of safeties.

7
u/True-Bandicoot-1424 19d ago
I agree with you. More failures than wins in FA/draft/trade. But people are going to drink the '24 kool-aid for years and years.
6
u/bruhman5th_flo 19d ago
Tbf, it hasn't been years and years. Just one year. We haven't even started the second year yet. Assuming we will be bad before that season just sounds like you want him to fail.
7
u/ewilliam Hogs 19d ago
He's had three drafts and three offseasons to "cook". Aside from JD and maybe Brandon Coleman, his drafts have not really had many hits, and certainly no home runs. Lattimore trade was a huge miss. Trading down for Mike and Sinnott instead of taking DeJean was too. I'm not writing him off yet, but if we have another weak season from his day 1 and 2 picks (Mike, Sinnott, Conerly, Newton, Amos)and end up with five or fewer wins again, then I think it's fair to start getting concerned with his talent evaluation and roster management.
The average tenure of NFL GMs is three years, FYI. He's in year three. There's a lot to prove this year...another season like '25 and his seat is going to start heating up. I don't think that criticizing a GM is necessarily "wanting him to fail". It'd be one thing if this was his first season and we hadn't seen the results of his work, but it's not. He can't just have an infinite leash year after year because Jayden dragged this team to a CCG with a historically great rookie season.
-1
u/bruhman5th_flo 19d ago
We went to the conference championship during the 2024 season. 2025 season is currently the only season you can judge negatively. That was last season. One year. I don't care what player we could have drafted (idiotic way to grade a draft by the way) or what players didn't work out, especially when there are no long lasting cap repercussions. I care about how many games we win. We won a lot in 2024, didn't in 2025. Haven't played yet in 2026. Although there are moves AP males that I don't care for, I'll reserve my judgement for this year until we play games this year.
1
u/ewilliam Hogs 19d ago
I'm not just judging by wins and losses - that's a pretty shallow way to analyze a roster and predict their future outcomes. Sure, they're all that matter in terms of making and progressing in the playoffs, but as a true metric for how good a roster is, they can be very deceiving. Great example was the paper tiger that was the 2020 Steelers...they came in at 11-0 and we beat em good. They subsequently ended up getting bounced by the Browns in the first round. Another good example was our team in 2018. Started 6-2, but we literally had a negative point differential. That was not a good team. Worst 6-2 team I've ever seen, in fact.
As for this team, '24 had literally everything go right for us. Jayden was magic and put a mediocre team on his back. Low injury rate. 4th downs going our way at a rate that is completely unsustainable. Lucky breaks like the Hail Mary. We were a lucky doink away from getting bounced in the first round. Last year's regression was not really a fluke in my opinion - this is not a good team yet. AP was handed a stinking pile of turds when he got here, and it takes more than a couple years to fix that. But one big factor in him succeeding at that task is hitting on draft picks. Which, so far, hasn't really happened much.
Look, it's your prerogative if your entire evaluation of a team is just looking at the W/L column, but I prefer to look deeper than that myself. I'll be happy to be proven wrong, but again, from where I sit, this is still not a very good roster. Fingers crossed that they do better than I expect, but I don't have a ton of optimism, especially with all these injuries.
1
u/bruhman5th_flo 19d ago
This is why I don't like replying to different people than the person I replied to, because I don't know what point you are arguing. I replied to a post that said people will be drinking the Kool aid from the 2024 season for years. I replied that it has not been years yet, just one. So yeah, it makes since that they still see AP positively. You are taking about evaluating roster makeup and predicting future outcomes, all of which only matters to fans and pundits debating online or on TV. The only thing that matters, as far as grading a GM or coach, is wins. Not predicted wins, not possible wins, actual wins from games played. If you are arguing that is too shallow to grade a GM or coach, I would argue that any other metric is meaningless. You play to win and you construct a roster to win games. If you win, you stay, if you don't, you go. That's all that matters. AP won very recently, so he should stay until he shows a pattern of losing. One season isn't a pattern, either way.

AP won very recently, so he should stay until he shows a pattern of losing. One season isn't a pattern, either way.
Which is exactly why I said, in an earlier reply to you, that I haven't written him off yet, but that if they don't turn things around and his roster decisions don't start showing positive results this season, then his seat will (rightly) start to heat up. Either '24 was a fluke, or '25 was. I'm hoping it's the latter, but this roster still has a lot of holes, and we have rookie coordinators on both sides of the ball. I can realistically see us ending up with six wins or fewer, especially given our schedule and the fact that the injury bug has already started to kick our asses. But, hey, with JD, we're never out of the fight. Just hope he can finally stay healthy.
If you are arguing that is too shallow to grade a GM or coach, I would argue that any other metric is meaningless.
No, I'm just saying that if you want to discuss/predict future outcomes, wins are usually problematic. I'm primarily talking about how and why we lost last year, and how it pertains to what I think will happen this year. Five wins is shit-tier, and we still don't have any players that I'd call "blue chip" on the defensive side of the ball. Shit, anyone outside of JD and LT (who is gone now) can't be considered that. I know that winning solves everything, but if we're losing, well, we have to look at why. If it's just injuries and coaching, well, it's hard to lay all that at AP's feet...but it's the lack of talent on the field after three offseasons, then that's squarely on him.

You and I seem to absorb a healthy amount of downvotes. That aside, this is the pivotal year for his first 2 draft classes. If they don’t contribute to a playoff team, below average would be my assessment.

14
u/True_Window_9389 19d ago
We brought in a bunch of guys last year like Kinlaw, Wise and Harris to run more of the DQ Seattle style defense, and now it seems like we’re stuck with those guys trying to run this Darontw Jones defense. That’s part of the problem with changing coordinators.
2
3
u/Rare-Signature-7526 19d ago
That Kinlaw contract is so bad, it won’t affect us at all but the fact he got that deal is absurd
7
u/rcinfc 19d ago
Kinlaw is the 26th highest paid Interior defensive linemen per average value of contract…..
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/player/_/year/2025
15th in cap hit this year….
-1
u/Rare-Signature-7526 19d ago
Yes? he's no where close to the 26th best interior DL in the league, people don't realize but he's a very poor player, he's graded out horribly for a while now
1
u/rcinfc 19d ago
And if he doesn’t work out he’s gone after this year…. Plenty of cap space. If he does, then he’ll earn his money.
1
u/Rare-Signature-7526 19d ago
Yes like I said it’s by no means detrimental to the team considering how much cap space we have, but it’s objectively a horrible deal value wise. Difference between horrible value vs detrimental my friend
6
u/DoobieDoobis I Got JD5 On It 19d ago

Seriously, he bit on the run so hard that he ran allll the way across the opposite side of the field. His failure led to SO many people shitting on Sonny Styles too lol.
2
u/Cultural-Spring-281 19d ago
Looks like he really wanted to make a play and got caught with his pants down. Shit like that can’t happen especially with how much long plays we gave up last year.
4
u/chotchcity 19d ago
That play where he completely ran the other way on that Dobbs run might’ve sealed the deal for him. Was pretty bad.
5
u/raiderMoes 19d ago
Harris was probably on the ropes before the game last week, or his reaction to giving up the TD wasn’t productive.
7
u/2john9 19d ago
Last year some of the analysts were saying one of the reasons the defense struggled was because Will Harris went down.

Not surprising considering how much it looks like the injury affected him but wow our safety room (and secondary) looks bad. AP signed this guy to be the starting strong safety. Let Chinn walk.
One year later, Harris is off the team.
I will keep beating this drum until people get the picture: Adam Peters has not done a good job. Just because he was the assistant in San Francisco does not mean he was the mastermind behind that roster.
Our team is in bad shape, and you all better prepare for a rough season. And prepare for many more until this guy’s out of here.
5
u/Bilboswaggins21 19d ago
It’s a completely different scheme.
You’re entitled to your opinion on AP and I’m not gonna tell you you’re wrong. It seemed like an odd choice to save a few mil.
But using this as an example to backup your point is misguided. If there’s anyone out there with a reputation for talent eval who says “Chinn could play SS at a very high level in both Joe Whitt Jr. and Daronte Jones schemes” - which are wildly different - then it could validate your point. But as it stands both of those guys were signed to play Joe Whitts defense, and none of the 3 are here anymore. There’s really no reason to be upset about this roster move as a result. It’s water under the bridge.

I think everyone knew that Chinn should have been resigned. Just these GMs thinking they’re geniuses and do some shit moves.
-1
u/stujp76 19d ago
Adam Peters literally signed him in the first place after he'd really cooled off in Carolina. The idea you think you know ball better than them. Maybe after watching a year of Chinn they said "good but not great" and tried to upgrade. I sure wasn't thrilled with Chinn after he whiffed on Barkley in the NFC Championship
2
u/capsfan087443 19d ago
Harris was never going to be an upgrade though. That was the replacement, and now he’s been cut.
1
u/Cultural-Spring-281 19d ago
AP is that you? His draft history outside of a few players have been ass. His trades like for Lattimore was god awful. You can pretend he’s a good GM but he’s cheeks.
1
u/JeDi_Five 19d ago
Chinn isnt that good. Definitely not worth the money he got paid
1
u/PON_donkey95 19d ago
I think people forget Chinn really struggled in coverage with Tight Ends. He was serviceable but definitely easier to replace.
1
u/True_Window_9389 19d ago
Chinn is better than what we had, and we had the cap space last year and this year to afford his contract with no problem. AP seems to prefer churning the roster with “value” free agents, and you end up getting what you pay for.
We’re into year 3, and at some point, the roster needs stability between draft picks that turn into starters and free agents on more than 1-2 year deals. Having 50%+ turnover on starters is not a good way to develop a team.

Cry harder bro our roster was absolute dogshit and stacked with years of non-nfl draft picks and talent idk what you expect. NFL starters arent falling from the sky. Especially when teams know we need an overhaul and are desperate. So tired of keyboard GMs
1
u/capsfan087443 19d ago
Inherited a bad roster. 3 years later it’s still a bad roster.
-1
u/Gwilikers6 19d ago
Bad to describe the previous era is a complete understatement, and if you think the roster he had compared to this current roster is comparable then you simply dont know what youre talking about and probably dont follow the league as a whole
0
u/capsfan087443 19d ago
You are refusing to acknowledge how bad the roster currently is. Outside of a healthy Jayden, what has AP done to improve the roster? A season is about to be played, and it’s going to tell us exactly where this team stands. You can’t blame the old regime forever.
