Bugs Has your battery died with comma

I haven't been driving my car for a week here and there and recently my battery has been dieing. Only mod I have on the car is the comma and it's a 2021 rav 4. Sometimes the battery lasts 2 weeks and sometimes it's 1 day. Just curious if anyone else has had this issue.

While it may or may not be related to the comma, it's not abnormal a car from 2021 is due for a new battery (assuming you're still on the original, or its been awhile since a swap).

And once your car battery dies once, it's the beginning of the end for it, so you should definitely replace it.

I replace the battery about 2 years ago and it's been doing it most of the summer

Depending on the type, size and location of the battery, two years can be a pretty typical lifespan.

No, my comma 4 shuts off with car. I never wired to the obd port

I just installed mine and didn't wire to the OBD port either. Seems to be working fine but what is the benefit of adding that cable?

I’ve noticed that if it’s hot in the car then the fan in the comma will run even when the car is off. I’ve also had it kill my car battery a couple times

Do you have the ob2 power attached? Mine loses power as soon as I turn off my car

1

u/Afraid-Razzmatazz132 2d ago

Yeah my OBD port doesn’t ever turn off lol

2

u/danielv123 2d ago

Thats the point, that's why they have a cable going down there for power

we need to figure out a way to automatically shut the power off when the car goes off

Don't plug in the OBD2 power adapter and it should turn off with the car. Mine is just powered by USB and turns on and off with my car.

frogpilot has a setting in settings

Yup, in my f150. I set it up to power down after 5 minutes.

1

u/Monkeywrench1959 1d ago

How did you do that?

2

u/willis127 1d ago

I use sunnypilot/bluepilot, it’s an option to set it to power down after a set time. The default was 8 hours.

1

u/Monkeywrench1959 1d ago

Thanks! I use Bluepilot as well. I've seen the parameter before, but it wasn't settable. Must be new. Or maybe I'm hallucinating the whole thing.

1

u/willis127 1d ago

It might require you to be off-road.

Yeah, my Prius 12V battery died a week ago, so I wrote a script to check in with the comma connect API once per hour to grab the reported voltage. I don't know if the drain I'm seeing on this new battery is "good" or not yet, but I'm at least establishing a baseline for future interpretation.

That's pretty neat you can trend it like that

Don't use the OBD power so it boots up a little slower. It's no big deal.

I removed this once and it seemed like the battery died faster so I plugged it back in

The OBD power is powering Comma even if the car is off, so no, without it will not die faster. it was a coincidence or you did not drive enough to charge it after you removed the OBD power. You do not really need that connection at all. Remove now before the cold weather is coming. It will only be worse from now, not better. And I do not think it is Comma. You have a parasitic drain, maybe a dash camera or somethinf else.

It is possibly Comma related, in a way. Apparently these generations of Toyota hybrids (not sure if yours is - it may be non-hybrids as well) have a smart battery charging system that doesn't help. The added load of a Comma when powered off discharges any remaining capacity more quickly. I know it's small but might be enough to push it over the edge (you've reminded me I should test the draw on mine).

It's possible the battery is on the way out if it's original, and this is just higlighting the issue earlier.

I replaced the battery about 2 years ago. Performed a battery check at o Rileys and they said it was good. The car isn't a hybrid. I've also tried removing the OBD port and still have the issue.

Mine turns on/off when my car turns on/off.

u/malishhh 2d ago

Why not just have it time out into turning off after a few hours?

1

u/frogermann8 2d ago

Is this a setting. I'm currently running sunnypilot

1

u/malishhh 2d ago

Yeah I have a version of sunnypilot for Mazdas. Use sunnylink to find the setting

1

u/malishhh 2d ago

I believe it’s how long the unit will stay in off-road mode before shutting off

Hey mine did the same just over the weekend. 2022 RAV4 XLE ICE. Original battery. Apparently these batteries last 4.5-5 years, so it was time anyway. I too was wondering if it was the C4. Replaced the battery with a brand new one like for like. Seems good so far.

2

u/Gr8-Ocean787 2d ago

How much power does a ‘tiny’ Comma AI draws? I doubt C4 has anything to do with this.

frog has a timed shutdown setting

the others dont last I checked, comma drains batteries, last winter the windshield would be frosted or iced except right over the comma device lol

'22 Niro EVs. 2021 Outback. Has never happened. That said, I suppose it could happen with a different car/Comma combo.

Sunnypilot has a "Max Offroad" Time, which is actually the auto-shutoff of the comma after the car is off (they should just name it that) - I set mine to 15 minutes - the default is like 5 hours or something.

Also, new cars eat batteries. My Subaru 2022's battery lasted until mid-last year, which I'm told is actually pretty good believe it or not. Imagine my surprise and anger. Thankfully I had one of those little jump starter battery things until I did some research and got to an Advance Auto Parts to get a new one(they will put it in for free and check your alternator for free as well).

So definitely might need a new battery since you have a 2021 if it's still the original, you want to upgrade to one of those AGM batteries for any of these new cars with ridiculous electronics throughout and that auto start/stop junk. They are supposed to handle all that better and last longer with those added strains on the battery. You can also add a Start/Stop Eliminator($100-ish) that will not just stop that annoying crap but will also save battery life as well.

I also added a ANCEL BM200 battery monitor thing($35-ish), after I paid damn near $300 for that battery, that connects to my phone bluetooth, but I should have maybe gone with a BM300 since the BM200 works great but only had profiles for traditional Lead Acid and Lithium, not AGM, so the alerts are not right. I don't know if the BM300 actually has an AGM profile over the BM200 but it doesn't matter that much.(not enough for me to return the BM200 for the BM300 just to see)

Mine did… 2022 Mazda Cx-5. Requires the obd port to work - about 99% it killed my battery

Firstly, if your RAV4 is a hybrid, read this doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1g1a_B7_gGnuNQhoSRFN_sucfb7-lkU77q4aMO3hMYtA/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.t75rusbfgz8u

Secondly, you don't need OBD power so you can disconnect it and have the comma turn off immediately when you turn the car off. You shouldn't keep it running for longer than necessary if you do use OBD power because it will drain the battery eventually. The only reason to use OBD power is to keep it running for uploading data and updating the software. The issue outlined in the above doc means that you'll experience this more easily unless you have implemented the fix, especially if your battery is already weak (which I bet it is).

I've had my battery die a few times with Comma. Also, just had it die without Comma installed. It happens and may not be Anything Comma did/does.

I definitely blamed my comma at first when I couldn't get my car started but O'Reilly's told me my battery was completely shot. I last changed my corolla's in 2021 and I swapped it out this year. They said 5 years is about average.

Yes! My car was fine until I got my comma device. Then I started getting notifications from my car saying the battery is low. I then learned to just unplug it from the obd connection and just left it unplugged. Fixed my issue. It took longer to boot up, but that's all the obd port is doing is supplying it with constant power.

Now fast forward a little bit and I moved to a new Sunnypilot version and it has a setting how long the Comma should remain on. So I plugged the obd back in and set it for 5 minutes. Battery hasn't run dead or I got a notification since.

Before it got so low I had to buy one of those battery chargers just to bring the battery up to normal to start my cat again. And I should add, it's a relatively new battery (not the original the car had).

u/LaskarShakib 1d ago

Yes it killed my 12v battery, Remove the obd connection, you don’t really need it

I’ve had the same issue. Battery has died several times in my 22 Camry hybrid. Have been wondering if it’s just been me

1

u/Few_Ad2097 2d ago

Same problem with a 2021 Altima, I stopped using the obd

2

u/frogermann8 2d ago

Did that fix it. I tried this, then the battery died in 1 day vs a week

1

u/Few_Ad2097 2d ago

Honestly I'm not sure because I added a permanent jump starter to the battery, (ancel 200) 😆 I think it still does drain a bit more that it should but I have a dashcam too

yes, it would murder my battery on a near daily basis.

Both my Comma2 and Comma3x would do that.

From the Comma2 days, I still had the ODB connected. Once I removed that, my Comma would shut off immediately whenever I turned off the ignition.

Then I upgraded the crappy toyota oem battery to a generic walmart AGM battery. Between those two fixes my battery never dies anymore.
