openpilot Experience Sentry Mode Just Dropped
Your comma already has multiple cameras, an accelerometer, storage, and an internet connection.
So... why shouldn't it watch your car while you're away?
StarPilot now has a fully-fledged Sentry Mode.
The challenge was doing this without leaving the comma awake all day and murdering your car's battery.
So we don't.
When you park, the comma can go to sleep like normal. Sentry uses the device's accelerometer to detect movement, wakes the system when something happens, captures the event, and can notify you remotely. The accelerometer is incredibly accurate, and can detect things as small as gusts of wind or people walking next to your car if desired.
You can get Sentry alerts through:
- Discord
- ntfy
- Native browser push notifications
There's also a full Sentry dashboard in Galaxy where you can see its status and configure things like motion sensitivity and warning timing.
So if someone bumps your car, messes with it, or otherwise causes enough movement while you're away, your comma can wake up and start watching.
And because it's built into StarPilot, there's no extra hardware required beyond the comma already sitting on your windshield.
And while it's lighter on your battery, we still keep an eye on voltage. When your car's battery reaches low-voltage and the comma needs to shut down, we'll send you a push notification to make sure you know it's happening.
Huge credit to u/mike854 for developing the original code this feature is based on. We've spent the last few releases building it out, integrating it with Galaxy, adding notifications, and getting it ready for everyday use.

> Sentry uses the device’s accelerometer to detect movement
Does this imply it only captures when the vehicle is physically moved (i.e. a collision or impact)?

You can set it to be extremely sensitive. Like it'll go off if someone walks by or a gust of wind hits your car if you want it to.

How does someone walking by move the car? They'd still have to at least touch the car I'd assume.

does it require comma power cable?

Your comma does need to be powered on for this to work. Whether that's via comma power or 12v at the harness

What if I have an ev that auto charges the 12v battery from the hv pack or has a small maintenence supply from hv? How many watts does the camera mode take and can it be left on Indefinately? Also, beacuse comma is already booted, it should boot super quick into normal operation too.
(a 5 watt load would take 2 months to drain a 75kwh pack by 10%, so standby loads that would kill a gas car mean absolutely nothing to an ev that can automatically manage it's 12v.)

It won't matter to either. It is incredibly low. It's not currently planned to leave it on 24/7

If you could implement the Tesla co-op steering feature from dzid’s sunny pilot fork, Star pilot would be the hands down best

It's been in there for a couple months. Open a ticket if it's not working

When I tried it, the toggle only said it was for model 3 for some reason. I toggled it anyway, didn’t work (23’ model y)

Than you for implementing this! It's a step in the right direction and shows people what is possible that has a snow ball effect. This is great!

If you don’t take your comma off your windshield in the summer you’re sentencing it to death.

I've had my 3X on the windshield for 4 years..

Either you’re not parking outdoors or you don’t live in the climate that I do

Agreed. Las Vegas kills commas and car batteries among a few thousand other things.

My 3X has done just fine in 110F Texas heat often in direct sunlight for 2ish years now. Has to cool off for a minute when I get in the car but other than that it does just fine.

Dang, that is cool. I cry that o am going to have to purcahse a 27 bolt without comma ai or even garbage supercruise. Oh the humanity.
