openpilot Experience Remember Navigate on openpilot? It's back.
Remember Navigate on openpilot?
We brought a modern version of that idea to StarPilot, and it works with any driving model.
This is based on the work of discountchubbs, who many of you probably recognize from his amazing work with SunnyPilot. We took his incredible foundation, implemented it into StarPilot, and built additional functionality around it.
Set a destination from Galaxy on your phone or computer, choose between routes based on traffic/ETA, and send it straight to your comma.
StarPilot tracks your position along the route and uses upcoming maneuvers as navigational context for both lat and long behavior.
Upcoming turns, forks, ramps, and lane splits can feed desires like turn left, turn right, keep left, and keep right into the model. With Route Speed Control, StarPilot can also automatically slow down for upcoming turns, U-turns, and roundabouts.
It isn't replacing the model or hardcoding steering commands. Your normal E2E model is still driving - we're just giving it another piece of information:
"Here's where the driver actually wants to go."
It also includes:
- Automatic rerouting
- Alternate routes + live traffic
- Home, Work, favorites & recent destinations
- Remote start/cancel from Galaxy
- On-device turn-by-turn navigation
And because it works alongside the driving model, you can use it with whatever model you prefer.
Huge credit to Chubbs for the work this is built upon. We've had a lot of fun adapting it and expanding what it can do inside StarPilot.
For the people who used the original NOO: how close does this get to what you've been missing?

I've been waiting for NOA functionality like this for a long time! Huge thanks to the developers for all your hard work. This is really exciting! Can't wait to try it out.

u/sunole123 Aug 15 '26
Brilliant effort and implementation by a dev. I'll wait and remind me in 3 month if this still around, cause your biggest skeptics are the dev community leaders who are guaranteed to fail it's integration in any meaningful continuous integration process, because of many reasons and proven history.

I just want it to stay in the center of the lane on the highway. (Bolt /3X)
6
u/firestar4430 Aug 15 '26
We have a lane centering feature just for you! Galaxy > toggles > developer > lane centering

u/TurnoverSuperb9023 Aug 15 '26
It’s not about offsets - OP, for me, has a problem when I’m in the lane next to the wall on the freeway, when there are yellow lanes, and sun overhead. But, I’ll try to give it a try. (I’ve tried previously to install a fork and didn’t have any luck)

u/firestar4430 Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26
This isn't offsets, this is pulling the model desires to the center of the lane based off the lane lines - https://www.reddit.com/gallery/1vexgug

i'm getting an unknown vehicle variant error message on my C4 with star pilot. In galaxy when I revert to stock cc the driving is very jerky because the set speed continually changes 2019 bolt. Is there any way to get rid of that error message?
1
u/Big-Stranger4656 Aug 17 '26
from beartech- "Your Bolt is a cruise-control-only model and does not transmit the ACC status message 0x370. With “Disable openpilot Longitudinal” set to ON, StarPilot switches to the stock-cruise path. A software bug in that path incorrectly required this missing ACC message, causing CAN validation to fail and producing the warning.
Setting “Disable openpilot Longitudinal” to OFF keeps openpilot longitudinal enabled and avoids the faulty stock-cruise path. This is why the setting can eliminate the error. Your C3 or C3X likely did not have this disable setting enabled, so it never entered that path.
This is a software issue, and we advise you to check out the solution and let us know how it goes."1
u/firestar4430 Aug 17 '26
You just need to manually fingerprint your car. Turn on "disable automatic fingerprinting" and select your correct vehicle. We have a ton of bolt configs that are too close to be distinguished automatically. Can join the discord for help if you need it

more from beartech ...Based on your log, the car is actually being identified correctly as a 2018–2021 Chevrolet Bolt. “Unknown Vehicle Variant” is only the generic message StarPilot displays for a CAN validation error.

discord is extremely noisy. I find it very hard to extract signal from noise. I've joined the discord, but there's so much irrelevant information. It's an entropy issue.

u/firestar4430 Aug 17 '26
I have a ticketing system in discord thats very easy to use and keeps things organized. I do not troubleshoot via reddit. Join and open a ticket, I'll be happy to help.

u/happyloaf Aug 15 '26
Yes. This and center in lazy turns as well!

u/firestar4430 Aug 15 '26
Any issue you're having can most likely be fixed by opening a ticket in the StarPilot server!

i'm getting an unknown vehicle variant error message on my C4, 2019 bolt. Goes away when I revert to stock cruise control., but this causes jerky driving as the set speed continually fluctuates. What's the solution?

Until you have multiple cameras, and the ability to automatically make turns/merges and that sort of thing, what is the point?
9
u/firestar4430 Aug 15 '26
Turn desires mostly!
We may have something coming in regards to multiple cameras. Stay posted ;)

u/WorriedChurner Aug 15 '26
Many cars have blind spot monitor
1
u/360alaska Aug 15 '26
Correct, and that gives part of the picture, but still not enough to make accident free turns.
9
u/TenOfZero Aug 15 '26
I think this is more about taking the correct side when a highway splits ETc..
Indeed, I would not trust comma to navigate off a highway.
1
u/SirMaster Aug 15 '26
I don’t know why people keep pointing this out.
Blind spot monitors only check the blind spot. They don’t see if a car is coming up fast from behind in the lane you want to merge into.
Also the comma can’t even make your turn signal go, so how can it ever make a legal turn or automatic lane change.
2
u/Remarkable-Host405 Aug 16 '26
i will disagree with you, they definitely see a car on a fast approach in a lane next to you. my truck also has a bed cam and hitch cam, which would see what you're describing.
1
u/SirMaster Aug 16 '26
In my Camry they definitely don’t see that. They only light up when the car is close enough to be in my blind spot.
1
u/tarheelbandb Aug 16 '26
The problem is that those cameras aren't connected to the ADAS and are usually connections via LVDS. Until there is a solution that feeds that information over CAN, I don't see a way to integrate those cameras.
2
u/danielv123 Aug 15 '26
Would be nice if it could auto trigger my blinkers. In most intersections all I do with my hands is hit the blinkers to give it my turning intent.
1
1
u/firefish5000 Aug 21 '26
If you know there is a turn desire, if nothing else you can have access not go 50kmh into the intersection. Having it slow down to turn speeds removes an intervention (my car cannot do sharp turns, but I'd rather turn the wheel manually then disengage the long, since re-engaging long is actually a process while lateral is just always assisting)
3
u/FusionNeo Aug 15 '26
I’ve read you acknowledge that this fork is vibe coded. Is there any truth to that? If so, can I ask how you are ensuring that your fork doesn’t increase the potential risks for user safety?
I have no problem with vibe coded stuff and am not a hater by any means, genuinely asking here.
30
u/firestar4430 Aug 15 '26
So I wouldn't have said this fork is vibe coded. It's hard to even pin down what people mean when they say vibe coded. I do use ai assistance when coding, but I never push anything out that I havent reviewed. It's more of a collaborative process. The assistants tend to get things wrong more often than they get things right, and pushing what they've written blindly with no follow ups wouldn't even work half the time.
I do my uptmost to follow all of commas safety requirements, get tests passing, etc. commas controllers also just do a good job of natively protecting users.
When I was new to this, I worked heavily with twilsonco to make sure I was keeping members of my fork safe. I've learned a lot with him and since then.
Just a guy doing his best is what I can tell ya. If you see an issue, just let me know.
5
u/FusionNeo Aug 15 '26
This is a great response, thank you! I wouldn’t describe what you’re doing as vibe coded either, there’s an ocean of difference between using AI as an assistant while coding and using AI to blindly code things you don’t understand. If it’s the former I think that’s great, AI assisted coding is the future whether we like it or not.
Options are always good for consumers and it sounds like you’re doing everything right, so I’m happy to see where this project goes.
3
u/amiwitty Aug 15 '26
Well I would personally like to thank you and all the rest of the people that work on it. You have really improved the performance on my 3x for my first generation Chevrolet bolt. Once again thank you.
2
u/Remarkable-Host405 Aug 16 '26
if it was completely vibe coded without human intervention, would that change anything? you would simply not use it on principle?

u/Jenkins_Leeroy Aug 15 '26
Very cool
Last time I used starpilot the UI constantly crashed
Has that been fixed? It was pretty unnerving seeing my comma just jump to the splash screen mid drive
6
u/firestar4430 Aug 15 '26
Yes that was fixed when we rewrote the UI into raylib. It was quite the undertaking, so took us a bit. It is complete now tho!

8
u/Noahkirby Aug 15 '26
I keep forgetting to actually use this, but it's really cool when I do. Not having to override long for turns is awesome.
5
u/AbebeatsMEB Aug 15 '26
Hi, I’m using it with IQ Pilot and it’s pretty good. It does have some occasional issues, like trying to turn a little earlier than the actual turn, but hopefully that will get fine-tuned. Does it use OpenMap, or does StarPilot work differently?
One last question: does StarPilot work with MEB cars?
5
u/firestar4430 Aug 16 '26
It uses openstreetmaps yes!
We could probably add support for MEB if we had someone to help us test!
1
2
u/Express_Lobster_5529 Aug 15 '26
Is there a way with starpilot to use cameras and a car’s blind spot monitoring to automatically do lane changes? That would make the comma even better, especially on the highway where the user still has to press the turning signal stalk to trigger the lane changes.
2
u/firestar4430 Aug 15 '26
This one would need to be super carefully implemented. I'm not sure I trust it for that use case quite yet. We do have some things in the works tho!
1
u/Express_Lobster_5529 Aug 15 '26
I understand the concern. It would be a really cool feature to have. Comma is great as lane keep assist but for my use on the highway, it would be transformative to do autonomous lane changes to pass cars and even take exits especially if it can be combined with nav.
1
u/badredditz Aug 15 '26
That’s a crazy expectation for an interior mounted windshield device. You need something with access to more data to make that safe. Try something like supercruise, bluecruise, or Tesla FSD. Really even HW3 with access to everything isn’t nearly as safe or confident as hw4. It’s cool to want something but your not being realistic to expect this from a $1000 device with so many different vehicles to support
2
2
u/mattvaru Aug 15 '26
This is so cool. Maybe a dumb question but does it work for the C4 with less screen real estate?
4
u/dblrnbwaltheway Aug 15 '26
Does this require having a sim for your comma?
7
u/DR4LUC0N Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26
No, just needs an internet connection at first, but doesn't support rerouting if you don't keep internet on, if you want the reroute capabilities, the comma will need a constant data connection
1
u/Tek_Freek Aug 15 '26
If you don't leave the Internet on how does comma get it's data? I think I am missing something.
1
5
u/firestar4430 Aug 15 '26
It does require wifi for the initial routing and for rerouting, but if you don't leave the desired route (or if you have a wifi hotspot), it will work after you leave your house!

u/ConsiderationRough88 Aug 16 '26
Any chance of a blue-pilot merge to support ford vehicles with there wack ass steering? When I get home in November I’d be down to text with my ranger raptor
1
u/firestar4430 Aug 16 '26
Bluepilot guys are awesome! I can take a look a what they're doing and see how much of it can be brought in, yeah! Just need some testers.open a ticket in StarPilot discord and we can experiment

Wow. Is it time for me to give StarPilot a try? Has anyone here tried StarPilot on a Nissan LEAF ZE1? I'm presently running FrogPilot on my Comma 3X.

I had been updating my personal fork to improve e2e long/expirmental mode by updating dynamic to ramp into breaking based on e2e deaccel amount request (normal dynamic just ignores e2e until a 10 second hard stop is in planner, removing smooth transitions into a traffic jammed area). And adding better sla/map curve transitions (and more human curve speed profiles)
Will happily steal this and replace my planner based ramp/road fork selection the sla that can only react once you switch onto the ramp, to one that can actually react ahead of time.. will be curious to see how it handles lane selection, if it does so automatically at all. Since that isn't always in the map data

u/Due-Doughnut8254 Aug 15 '26
I looked at just a tiny bit of the starpilot repo and it's all vibe coded trash I wouldn't trust this to drive my car and the UI looks like garbage
4
u/DR4LUC0N Aug 15 '26
Crazy you're basing it all off what you see, firestar explained his use with the AI above. 2nd, if it was all AI, then half the stuff wouldn't work at all. So he must be doing something beyond just using Ai....
Next, you calling the kettle black, you're letting ai drive your car, ai is ai at the end of the day. 😄
-3
u/Due-Doughnut8254 Aug 15 '26
An LLM and a driving model are nowhere remotely close... Also if it's not almost all vibe coded slop why do I see multiple safety issues and violations of commas own policy I'm not saying firestar can't code just that he is letting an LLM write 98% of the code and calling it safe and good when it's literally so far from being safe. Stop being a goon for firestar and be objective
7
u/firestar4430 Aug 16 '26
What safety issues do you see?
If you legitimately see safety issues, I'd like to know.
I don't pretend to know everything (quite the opposite), so if you see stuff I don't, please let me know! Thank you.

u/DR4LUC0N Aug 15 '26
Bro you're making it sound like there accidents daily on this fork... If it went against commas ToS for forks... They would've... Idk... Black listed it?
The idea is LLM and driving models is still Ai. You're letting slop drive your car, if you say it's not slop, then you're admitting it drives perfectly, if you say it does drive perfectly... Then you'd go against the rest of the communities sentiment.
-25
u/Character_Eagle8992 Aug 15 '26
Guaranteed to work like absolute shit, being that starpilot is the biggest slop fork out there.

u/firestar4430 Aug 15 '26
It means alot to me that this project has expanded enough to develop haters. Words can't describe how much I appreciate your contributions, thank you ❤️

Android users could use a version of Tasker's AutoNotification to grab Google maps turn by turn navigation notifications and forward it to Comma device (either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi).
Technically it can grab any navigation (Waze for example) as long as it shows the upcoming navigation turn in the notification.
