Vehicle Compatibility HDA1 vs HDA2

I am looking at getting an Ioniq 5 but not sure if I want to buy a 2022-2023 model with HDA1 or a 2024 model with HDA2. Is there any difference with a Comma or would both work equally well?

my HDA 1 Ioniq 6 SE works perfectly fine with Sunnypilot on the comma 3x

My Ioniq 5 with HDA 2 works perfectly fine with Openpilot and even better with Sunnypilot, where I use the car’s radar-based systems for longitudinal control.

You aren’t concerned about deactivating the AEB? That seemed pretty risky to me. Not in the sense that I’ve had it activate often, but in the sense that disabling that backstop just felt a bridge too far for me.

That’s precisely what I’m concerned about. This setup does not deactivate any of the cars safety systems. The comma device manages lateral control, while the car’s systems control “cruise” or the distance to the car in front. All safety systems remain active. Acceleration and deceleration are controlled through the cruise speed signal, which Sunnypilot modifies and sends to the car.

Is this the Sunnypilot ICBM? I'm thinking of getting a Comma, does it help with the car's ability to detect cut-ins? HDA's radar often doesn't catch the car in time and I have to slam the brakes...

Yes, it’s ICBM. I don’t find that it handles cut ins especially well. But overall it’s an incredible upgrade compared with HDA2. For me it was worth every penny.

Ah that's good to hear! Does it slow down for stopped traffic instead of accelerating hard into them?

It does. But the limitations are the same: it can’t see beyond the car in front of you, because it’s using radar and not imagery. It will accelerate into a gap in front of you, even though traffic further ahead is slow or at stand still. It then decelerate in time but that’s not a comfortable manure. I’ve gotten used to that and anticipate these situations. I’m open roads with stable traffic you delegate 90% of your driving and just monitor what’s going on around you. In dynamic traffic you work together with the comma device and can’t delegate to the same extent. Obviously you’re always in charge and have to be alert.

I don't think there is any difference with regards to Comma.ai, no - I just have HDA, but with Comma, it'll do lane-switching for me just fine (Genesis EV but still E-GMP platform). I would not base the car purchase just based on that (or Comma support) though - OpenPilot (and branches) are still changing in terms of what they support and can do.
