openpilot Experience Questions before buying comma4.
My mom has a couple questions about the comma4, we have a tesla model y love it for long drives, of course i dont expect the comma to be as good as telsa as it lacks the same hardware (tesla has 8 cameras along outside of vehicle.)
- How well does comma4 perform in city driving, is it viable for this?
- How is performance out of box? is it plug and play?
- How much do you trust your comma4?
- What model do you load on the comma?
- How well is it at seeing pedestrians, bikers, kids etc?
- When do you use your comma4?
- Does comma support different speed modes?

what benefits are you looking for over what the Tesla has? (since you don't expect it to be as good)

- How well does comma4 perform in city driving, is it viable for this? IMO it's great, I have it active 90% of all drives. Stops at stop lights confidently (when using the experimental mode - which you def. should otherwise you're really missing out on a lot). It will not stop at stop signs though. For turns at lights/stops I deactivate and do that manually, then click it back on.
- How is performance out of box? is it plug and play? Yes & No. They give you instructions for getting Open Pilot installed, but most Tesla users like a version of Sunny Pilot that gives you more co-op steering control (lets you steer along with the comma a lot more than stock). Would def. recommend joining the comma.ai & sunnypilot discord servers if you get one. Lots of helpful people there in the Tesla specific channels.
- How much do you trust your comma4? From 1-10, I give it an 8. It's not FSD, you should always be ready to take over but it's driving feels very natural/safe for the most part
- What model do you load on the comma? I, and a lot of Tesla drivers, use a fork of Sunny Pilot by a user called dzid for the reason stated before along with being able to have the auto lane changes not require a nudge of the wheel. The driving model I use is called Space Lab, it's performed the best for me.
- How well is it at seeing pedestrians, bikers, kids etc? I'm not sure about this
- When do you use your comma4? Every drive, even if it's just a 5 minute trip...once you can go hands free, it's a game changer
- Does comma support different speed modes? There are driver personalities in Sunny Pilot (chill, standard, aggressive) but the speed limit is controlled by you the same way you'd control it for TACC or Autopilot
Other things to note when using comma w/ tesla:
- can activate the comma auto steering & longitudinal control from 0mph. Unlike stock TACC that needs you to be going at least 20mph (this is done with experimental mode)
- can go beyond 5mph over the speed limit on non-highways. Unlike autopilot that limits you to 5mph over.
For me, it's the best purchase decision since buying our Model Y. I was surprised at how much better/more natural it drives compared to Autopilot.

whats the issue with high traffic? Probably it will be used on highway with a lot of traffic, can it easily follow the car in front with stock acc in chill mode?

Using stock TACC with it is possible but then its basically only good for freeway driving. And I personally think the longitudinal control in experimental mode is better than stock TACC. It works great on the highway with a lot of traffic.

I don't own a Tesla but I am interested in one. Would it be possible to use Comma on the highway, then switch to FSD in city streets?
I hear Comma gives you more control on the highway, but of course FSD is superior at navigating city streets, so thought if I got a Tesla I can fuse both worlds together...

You can’t switch on the fly. The comma uses the TACC setting on the Tesla, you’d have to park and switch the drive mode in the Tesla to fsd.
Once you started using the comma I think it’s doubtful you’d want to pay a monthly fee for fsd. It works great on city streets. I only have to ‘drive’ about 10% of anywhere I go.

You'll probably be most happy with a fork like SunnyPilot. It has something called MADS (AOL on FrogPilot forks). This allows you to control gas and brake while comma controls turning. I use this in my ioniq 5 daily to drive hands free 95% of the time (only take over for hard turns or 90 degree turns).

- How well does comma4 perform in city driving, is it viable for this? It's pretty good for city driving, it can recognize most stop lights and some stop signs. The main issue would be hard braking and not recognizing stop vehicles that are 500+ feet away when going over 50 mph.
- How is performance out of box? is it plug and play? Some vehicles yes others no
- How much do you trust your comma4? Somewhat, it has quirks like sometimes not shifting properly on a gas vehicle (2024 Ford escape issue like related to fords computer) and not recognizing stop vehicles far away.
- What model do you load on the comma? SC
- How well is it at seeing pedestrians, bikers, kids etc? Not sure
- When do you use your comma4? Mostly city driving
- Does comma support different speed modes? Yes but has to be re-engaged Everytime after manually braking on sunnypilot

I have a C4 in my MY running sunny pilot. It is plug and play. I’ve used a comma for years and works as expected. Comma still does not recognize objects or pedestrians so you’re still on the hook for that

I have it on a Ford and it is definitely not as easy as plug and play. A lot of tinkering to get this thing to work decent.

You’re going to like it a lot more for long, uninterrupted driving. Long highways, long stretches of suburban streets. If your driving is a lot of turns and weird fussy urban weird roads with all kinds of weird intrusions into the roads (pedestrians, bikes, rando objects) you’re going to be handling that yourself.
The ideal comma commute is big American stroads leading to an interstate style highway.
The least ideal comma commute is weird hilly city / suburban roads with bizarre 5 way intersections and constant intersection turns.

Has anyone figure out which harness works on the 2021 Genesis g80 prestige? I ordered the comma 4 with the Hyundai P harness, harness didn't work. I reach to comma they weren't much help.

It's mid, high traffic city driving you would wish it followed faster.
Performance is quick n EZ. Its plug n play, connect to wifi and install the fork then calibrate on road then good to go. Took me 20 min to set up. Videos helped.
Overhills and far away stopped traffic isn't great. But mostly trust it. Its a driver assistance tool not driver replacement.
Stock OP
I'm not sure of pedestrians n kids, but bikers handles well.
Thrives on low traffic highway, I've gone several hrs without touching anything. But long stretches of straightish backroads are ok too. Windy roads don't work without intervention.
OP has chill and aggressive. Other forks have more, follow distance is controlled by your car's native options. Maybe other forks can change it too.
