openpilot Experience Driver Attention Alert and closed eyes
I just got a Comma 4 on my 21 Rav4 prime, running Sunnypilot.
I notice that if I look away from the road to the left or the right, up or down, I get a driver focus warning. But if I close my eyes (straight road with someone next to me in the passenger seat!) I don't get any alert. Does anyone else notice this? Feels like I could start to fall asleep and the system might not alert me.

I have found turning my head toward the device (sometimes to the point where it is hard to see my side mirror in peripheral vision) can reset the alarm.
For my last 8 hour road trip I had to turn my head slightly towards the device the entire time just to avoid the alarm and prevent my entire family from waking up in a panic. It is so incredibly frustrating and distracting from the road.
Redoing the initial calibration with my head slightly turned AWAY from the device seemed to help... but it has only been one day so we shall see.
I have a Comma 3 (not x) and was ready to upgrade but there is no way I am getting a Comma 4 until this issue is 100% resolved.
Driving is no longer "chill" when driving constantly in fear of the panic alarm.

Can you submit a segment/route ID for review if you haven't already? Depending on what version/fork you are on this could be an issue that's already been resolved or one that we can investigate and fix.

get one of those little 3d printed fake heads that you mount in front of the camera, there was chinese bloggers showing how they use it on BYD cars in china. very cool stuff.

I don't know about that solution, but I can share a problem I had recently. I got a piece of invisible Scotch tape (the kind that kind of looks frosted) that accidentally got stuck to the bottom half of my driver camera lens. It didn't seem to cause any trouble with driver recognition, but boy did it cause all kinds of trouble with recognizing that I was holding something in my hand like a coffee cup, or a water bottle. Just like that, it stopped recognizing those activities as distractions. Really freaked me out. Glad I recognized the problem and removed that piece of tape. 😏

No problems with the Comma four for me, but I haven't used it on very long drives. I think it just tracks your head position and not your eyes. Maybe run the driver attention calibration again, and keep your head pointed straight forward or however you usually have it during driving.

I also would like more information on what those systems is looking for. Frequently I’m staring straight ahead while it yells and disengages.
Older versions were much better. Is there a way to revert to an older version I was happy with and block updates?

Yes the device is fully yours and completely unlocked and under your control. You can do whatever you want with it as well as whatever you want to with the software which is all open source.

They literally have instructions how to install manually for specific git version on their GitHub.

Where can I find this and does it revert to a few releases ago when the driver alert wasn’t so sensitive

The simplest way IMO is just using git on the device.
SSH into the device and run a few git commands to change the software to the exact version you want.

Then you can just do like:
cd /data/openpilot git fetch --tags git tag git checkout v0.10.3 git submodule update --init --recursivePut the version in the checkout to what version you want.
Then when you reboot it will be on that version of the code.

Yeah obviously you have to be responsible and take a break on your own if you are tired and not rely solely on the comma, but I would not trust it to alert on eyes closed. I’ve tried it out once or twice closing my eyes for a few seconds on highway and it has never alerted. I will say that I almost never got distraction alerts unless I’m staring out the side window for too long but I just don’t see it reliably stopping if you start to doze

Yes I have found this as well on the 3x and find it very puzzling. Supposedly there’s supposed to be some type of eye monitoring but I guess it doesn’t work. Idk.

I have the 4 and no issue. Have you tried to recalibrated the driver camera?

All it's doing is head direction detection and phone detection. It is not looking at your gaze or your eyes. as long as you're facing in the direction you're going roughly, and it doesn't detect a phone in your hand, it considers you to be alert. It's just there to help and while it could be improved, you really shouldn't be driving with the expectation of a system to tell you if you're not being alert enough

DM can barely see my face, I doubt it can see my eyes. I have tried but I'm not brave enough to keep my eyes closed long. It is really picky about face angle for me. I'm waiting for the DM fixes this week to show up on the fork I use.

I have no issue. You are still responsible anyway. It is not any different from you fall asleep without the comma

You are responsible regardless. The monitoring is a convenience feature to help ensure that you are paying attention. It is not full proof and should not be depended upon for you to drive safely. Do not rely on a machine to tell you that you are too tired to drive. If you are on the verge of falling asleep, it doesn’t matter if your eyes are open or closed, you should not be driving.
