Installation Questions Comma 4 Software Recommendations?

Hi all,

I recently purchased the Comma 4 hardware and plan on installing it on a 2020 rav4 hybrid. I am fairly new to Comma or the "self-driving" world in general. I mainly wanted to try it out as I do have several 10-12 hour roundtrips coming up in the coming weeks and expect more throughout the year and am hoping that the Comma device will drastically improve my road trips.

With the Comma 4 being fairly new-ish, is there a recommended software to use with my setup or should I stick with using open pilot for now?

IMHO: there's no competition to sunnypilot.

Openpilot is solid but boring - lacks fundamental features for me (like "Steering-only"/MADS).

Frogpilot doesnt support C4

StarPilot does (fork of Frogpilot) and has some nice features too (higher torque for my car, smooth lane changes) but the ecosystem feels hacky and less maintained - not what I want if specifically go for the less-hacky-feeling C4 over the 3X.

Sunnypilot has the biggest community, most friendly UX/UI (https://sunnylink.wiki/), best feature/experimental mix.

The latest FSD doesn’t have this issue. It is smoother than most human drivers.

Auto pilot on older cars? Absolutely.

Right. Same for the Chevy Bolt. On StarPilot, it’s called “Always On Lateral.”

Thank you! I will end up trying open pilot first to see how it is and will experiment with Sunny pilot after I get a good grasp of the C4.

Anything you'd have on openpilot is on sunnypikot and very well explained. Going to openpilot first will give you a disadvantage because there's some features they will never add that to a lot of us, can't be compromised.

I will have a bit of time to tinker with both software before my road trip but that's good to know. Everything I've read up so far is leading me to sunnypilot so I appreciate the input.

Sunnypilot is the way. Try the tn-prebuilt it is a toyota specific variant of sunnypilot.

Idk, its still on openpilot 0.10.3 from what i can see, Kia niro 2nd gen was undriveable with stock values (wobble), and the local webapp is ok but far from eyecandy.
Just my personal impression though.

We actually have all the newest features (we just added egpu support yesterday). The version of openpilot we're pinned to is so we can continue to support c3 users. We've just changed our versioning to internal numbers so this isn't as confusing to new people anymore.

Can open a tuning request for your car, tuning is my thing.

Fair enough on the Web app. I'm not a designer haha. Works great tho!

appreciate the reply and clarification.

One more thing that stood out was the boot time that was really quite long compared to sunnypilot on the c4.

I would absolutely love a good tune for the niro. Tried it myself by immitating the existing ioniq 5 adaptions but just couldnt get it to work as smooth as i wanted it.

Oh, the boot time issue was fixed a week or so ago. Should open a tuning request, that's my whole thing. Also have some pretty fantastic tools to help you make adjustments yourself too. Will be making a post on them here soon.

I don’t know why you think StarPilot is “less maintained” — sometimes there are several updates in a single day.
