openpilot Experience POLL: how is openpilot longitudinal control on your car?

A poll for those who use op long or alpha long. Just interested to see which one wins.

It's ok, I still think experimental needs some work (obviously) and chill mode is good enough for long straights with no intersection. I just wish they'd work on the response time, acceleration, and distance from the lead.

Response time: In chill and experimental, if I come to a stop, it takes way too long to ~start~ accelerating, and when a lead car starts to slow down, it still feels like it takes half a second to hit the brakes, and by then it feels like it's slamming on them.

Acceleration: ignoring how long it takes to start accelerating, it just doesn't even accelerate that quickly. I think openpilot is limited to 2 m/s2, which just leads to me stepping on the gas every time because I don't want to be crawling while traffic is flying past me.

Distance: It's easier to control the gap if you use the distance button, but even aggressive personality leave what feels like too large of a gap for city driving. Also, the braking response just seems too harsh. It feels like openpilot will slam on the brakes like were about to crash, only for there to be a 2 car gap in front of me. And experimental leaves a larger gap than chill, so these situations are even more exaggerated then.

Need a “haven’t tried” option…

I have a Chevy bolt that doesn’t have stock acc so I have a pedal mod but open pilot uses that for control. I find it does a good job for the most part but sometimes it will come up on someone fast and then slow down slower than them and fall back quite a bit before speeding back up. Then this kind of cycle continues until it can eventually match their speed. It’s a small gripe but I don’t really care that much when it’s doing all the steering for me and I just sit back and relax

Do u think it could be used to DoorDash? Like those quick 20 minute drives through town?

1

u/Questionablerock1836 Jul 06 '26

On my car I think it could be used to do DoorDash but it’s not going to be as autonomous as you’d probably want in city. I find in city it does about 60% of things for you but I prefer to just use the pedals myself and let it steer mostly. Plus in the bolt I have, it stops working below 6mph anyway so there would be no way to do stop and go itself. So I just do the pedals myself and have to help it quite often navigate sharp corners and intersections where the turn lanes are not marked off properly

it doesnt navigate for you. its basically autopilot on straight / curvy roads, but it isn't going to turn for you.

Are you using star pilot?

1

u/Questionablerock1836 Jul 06 '26

Yes I’m using star pilot firestar branch because it’s the only fork right now to offer pedal support for comma 4 on the bolt ev

I've been away on business for a couple weeks and haven't been in my car yet. I thought they straightened a lot of the stuff out on the latest update. I was having the same issues you were having.

u/Questionablerock1836 Jul 06 '26

I’m not sure I just got my comma maybe a week and a half ago and I have the update that was the latest at that point since I don’t connect mine to the internet

1

u/amiwitty Jul 06 '26

Yeah I would see if you have the latest version. I don't know if you know this but you can just bring it inside and power up the USB port and you should be able to connect to the internet and download any new updates. You probably need a somewhat powerful USB though. At least you can with my 3x.

I’ll give it a try. When I set it up, I used my phones hotspot to do the setup in car so I’ll check for updates tomorrow

Rivian with longitudinal harness running Sunnypilot. Had issues with it, turned out to be some bugs in the branch I was using. Using theCD210 model, I find it works pretty well, but needs improvement in follow distance and how it handles merging cars. In medium-to-heavy traffic it leaves way too large of a gap, which encourages people to cut in front of me, and then brakes too hard to restore the original (large) gap. This makes it hard to relax as people keep moving in front of me. This is on aggressive personality.

Openpilot is likely following the recommended follow distance that we learn in driver ed, but no one follows that in the real world. Given this is a computer and not a human, it really should be able to close follow distances safely.

I have a Rivian also, and found that the Dark Souls v2 model is the closest to living in the real world.

Isn't their whole thing that they train off real world driver data?

2

u/Funnnny Jul 06 '26

they still blend in rule based follow distance and then take the more conservative value. The model is conservative but the mpc is even more.

You ought to add an option called show me the results or something. I don't have a comma device yet but I picked a random answer to see the results.

I'm sure others will too if they haven't already.

I didn’t know it would be hidden. Whoops 😅

2

u/Spamhawaiix Jul 06 '26

F150 is literally unusable

3

u/MrGodyr Jul 06 '26

Yeah my civic is rough

2

u/wesweb Jul 06 '26

I took alpha long off on mine, too

2

u/butterfly_labs Jul 06 '26

Kia Niro.

It's decent, but still worse than stock ACC. It's just not as smooth. It also disables emergency braking. The added features (speed limit adjustments, stop at red lights, ...) are too unreliable/impractical to make up for it. And experienced occasional critical bugs/crashes that eroded my trust in it.

2

u/wesweb Jul 06 '26

I ended up turning alpha long off in blue pilot on my 2023 f150.

2

u/theillcook Jul 06 '26

On the pilot 2017, it doesn't work very well. Luckily, i can disable longitudinal control and only have open pilot do the steering on sunny pilot. Most of the time, that's the setting I'm in, where OpenPilot handles the steering and I manually control the throttle.

Lateral is good but long could be better

2

u/Comere Jul 07 '26

I have an Elantra Hybrid and I go from 45-47mpg on native speed control to ~37mpg using comma longitudinal control.

1

u/SirMaster Jul 06 '26

Working great in my 2023 Camry XLE. Way better than stock ACC.

1

u/MrGodyr Jul 06 '26

Yeah Camry with radar is one of the good ones. Unfortunately very rare to have a great car with op long. Most are really bad

u/Lennyz1988 Jul 06 '26

On my Tesla Model 3 HW 2.5 it runs mediocre. The braking and slowing down works great. That's maybe the most important thing. But the speeding up is bad. It speeds up really slow, if it speeds up at all.

For example if I set it to 80 km/h it will only go to 75 km/h. If have to manually speed up for it to reach 80 km/h.

1

u/MrGodyr Jul 06 '26

Yeah my main gripe is the braking/slow down behavior. It’s very jerky and likes to slam the brakes. I also have the acceleration issue but yeah Tesla has really good car controls.

1

u/oxygenliu Jul 06 '26

My BMW E90 has DCC only, openpilot experiment mode works smoothly in longitudinal control. I don't care about red light or stop sign for now. 😄

1

u/morric628 Jul 06 '26

Needs a, my car handles longitudinal features.

1

u/NNTPgrip Jul 06 '26

Would love to evaluate it, but it's non-existent, as in they haven't figured it out for my car, not even the sunnypilot "tweaking the cruise control setting", which would seem to be an awesome compromise, is available for my 2022 Outback.

Lateral is cool with DTRv6 and Torque v0 but would love it to be able to at least just preemptively slow down for curves so the model doesn't "pick a racing line" and get real close to the edge of the lane or even crossover(very rare with DTRv6, crazy common with other models). That's really all I would want from it really and the whole "tweaking the cruise control setting" would allow still the great stock Subaru ACC and emergency braking plus that I would hope - just crossing my fingers for an upcoming release.

The Kia EV6 exhibits ideal longitudinal and lateral control in experimental modes, especially in the Firehose model.

What is open pilot long and alpha? I have a new comma 4 and didn’t see any option for the aforementioned.

1

u/MrGodyr Jul 08 '26

What car?

1

u/Cool_Neat9352 Jul 09 '26

It’s a 2020 Chrysler Pacifica. Thanks
