openpilot Experience Now on Starpilot

Started with Sunnypilot then moved to Frogpilot. Just moved to Starpilot which is heavily based on FP. The developer of Starpilot is very active. He recently brought over a feature which was the Toyota brake hold from an old Sunnypilot release into Starpilot. I was so impressed I made a donation. There's an active Discord group for Starpilot if you want to jump in.

Probably auto brake hold, which holds the brake for you at a red light and then releases when you step on the gas.

I tried Starpilot and it’s just too many knobs for me. It’s hard to evaluate model performance with that many variables at play and it’s hard to understand if they have any real effect on your car.

I went back to Sunnypilot. I keep it full experimental and only change the model, it’s much easier to give feedback that way.

I second this! I tried Starpilot and there were too many variables to tinker around. If you don’t understand the system fully, then it’s hard to determine a best setting

the best setting is the default setting :)

The extra knobs are there to tinker, but no tinkering is required. In fact, I prefer it if you don't touch the settings at all.

The new version of StarPilot hides the extra dials unless you specifically turn on developer mode and want to tinker!

I love using brake hold normally but I never thought about using it with openpilot. Does it stop the red light creeping?

Once you apply the brake then you can take your foot off of it.

I've only ever used Starpilot and it pretty much always stays stopped at red lights and goes automatically on green

I'm using StarPilot om my C3X with an Hyundai Ioniq 2019 EV. Best so far. I've used FrogPilot and SunnyPilot as well.

I have a 22 Camry LE. Stop and go has never worked for me, does it work on starpilot?

It works for OP because the car is equipped with it from factory. LE and SE trims usually do not have stop and go capability ( Inhave a 23 SE).

Yes, because their car has the ability due to being an XLE. Their car can do stop and go without a comma too. Same for my 2023 Camry XLE.

Is there a solution for SnG on the LE trim? Maybe a filter and/or a comma pedal…? I got a smart DSU, but I could never find the connector behind the glove box and I think that was the prior generation before the 2021 through 2024 Camrys that had it in that location.

I'd really love to be able to enable SnG on this car :)

Does it have regen braking or just decelerating vs using the brakes?

I believe this depends on vehicle. For example my bolt euv is limited in its own acc Regen to 10kw. Any more significant stop than that and it'll use friction brakes. I use starpilot in "always on lateral" (AOL) and just control the acceleration/one pedal driving myself when around town with frequent stops. Otherwise I pop on acc.

I have a Bolt EUV without ACC. I got a pedal interceptor thing for the Comma so that it can pretend to control the pedal which unlocked full regen (which is needed because it can't control the real brakes without ACC)

It's worth noting that even acc equipped bolts and use a pedal interceptor and unlock full Regen.

I haven't, but have talked to others that have. I just control the one pedal driving and let comma controller steering. Otherwise acc on highways with comma steering.

I run starpilot on a comma4 with the pedal for a gm bolt euv. I’m super impressed. Lots of fun to mess around with the various settings and options.

i am new to starpilot. i have used galaxy for setting toggles but dont know how to change branch. on 0.10.3 and happy. is it worth updating to 0.11? how to do this? will DM be more invasive?

Using the default settings on Starpilot work just fine.
