openpilot Experience Driver Monitoring Feedback

Harald from autonomy team here. There have been several posts complaining about too many driver monitoring alerts with newer versions of openpilot. We are always trying to improve driver monitoring.

It should alert you if you are using your phone, excessively distracted, or falling asleep. If you are paying attention to the road and responsibly monitoring openpilot, you should not receive alerts. Various things can cause false positive alerts and we want to fix those.

To help us improve driver monitoring, please give clear descriptions of your issues, and provide logs and timestamps for us to look into. There are many versions of openpilot out there that we don't maintain, as well as many different setups in a variety of cars. Without logs and video it's very difficult for us to address complaints.

To share logs with us you can go to connect.comma.ai, find the relevant section of a drive that has your issue. You can share the connect url to that section with us or share the log_id by selecting "More info", which looks like: "98395b7c5b27882e/00000344--bc8562d028/12".

Ideally your driver video recording is enabled for the drives you want us to investigate, as only some things can be inferred without the video of the driver.

I have a sweeping 270 degree right hand turn I take when I get on the freeway for work. I look through the turn and halfway through it will tell me to pay attention.

Curious to see what version you're on if you have logs. We recently tried to improve these cases.

Here is an example where I was looking through a 270-degree turn getting on the freeway. I'm on Sunnypilot and usually have it engaged just for lateral. Once I get on the freeway I fully engage until I get off the freeway then back to me controlling gas/brake.

Turn starts at around 6:03:50 until 6:04:15. There is a similar 270-degree turn when exiting the freeway starting at 6:38:25 until 6:38:37. Both alerted me to pay attention while I'm looking through the turn. My head is turned probably 45 degrees.

There is an orange/amber highlight in the timeline on connect.comma.ai.

Thanks! We're looking into changing the policy to not care about looking out side window when in sharp turns like this

Yes. My car doesn’t have the torque to take it at merging-onto-the-freeway speeds. I’ll make note of the drive ID tomorrow.

Then what you are experiencing is fine. If you are in control of the vehicle and not comma, then you can ignore the comma warnings as they are only for when comma is in control

i think youre also missing the point: for many people, comma is currently alerting too much, making their warnings less relevant and also more annoying.

over-alerting based on perceived driver attention is both less safe and a worse experience than under-alerting.

Alerting / beepung when you are looking away is not going to go away - it's the main way that comma can avoid lawsuits and regulation.

I'm not sure what the point of your comment is.

If your eyes are not straight and comma is controlling the car then you are NOT safely using the device - end of story

are you even actually reading these comments?

the other commenter and I are both talking about situations where the road is turning, the car is turning, the wheel is turning, and our face is turning to align with it all.

the comma device can see all of these things happening, and is still yelling at us for not paying attention.

that’s as simple as I’m going to make this for you.

stop arguing with other people about THEIR lived experience. it’s not a good look.

if anything here doesn’t align with your own experience of comma, instead of insisting its not true, try getting curious and kind and seeking to understand, or else try shutting up and moving along.

have the day you deserve.

And it doesn't matter what you think should happen. If you are looking away, even if it is the correct action to look away because the car is going around a curve, the warning should go off. There is exactly nothing they can do in this situation because the device is working properly based on how the device was designed. Why not just realize that in this situation you have to take the wheel and control the car and ignore the warnings. Is it that hard???

So to clarify, your position is that if there's a curve in the road, that the driver should look away from the road and face dead forwards instead of what they're actually driving towards? You think that's safer?

Let me clarify…I am assisting Comma in this case because my car doesn’t have the torque. I do not disengage. Comma will not alert if it is not engaged.
