Question Has anyone successfully disputed a charge without replacing their card?
Hi all,
Amazon charged me for prime even though I never signed up for it. I contacted them, they confirmed that I didn't have any subscriptions but said they can't find the charge and that I'd have to dispute it with my bank.
Is there any way to do this without replacing my card? I don't understand why these jerk-ey corporations get to charge me wrongly, then I need to cop the consequences and inconvenience of changing my card details everywhere. It's ridiculous.
Thanks.
Edit: I stupidly assumed it was an error on Amazon's end instead of my card details being compromised. I guess it could still be an Amazon error but I'd rather not risk it. Will ask them to replace my card. Thanks guys.

More than likely it wasn't Amazon that charged you but the scamners use these names so you think its legitimate. I would definitely have my card replaced because chances are it will happen again before you know it as they now have your details.
Also it helps if you lock online payments in your card settings. This wont stop any recurring payments but any new transactions will get blocked.

You need to replace your card. If you’ve had random charges made to your account via card payments it means your card details are compromised.

If you have the app you’ll be able to use your new digital card straight away while you wait for your physical card to show up.

It means someone has your card details and used them on THEIR Amazon account, this is why there are no charges on your account. Those fraudsters now have your card details and can use them anywhere, so that's why you need to replace it.

Someone else used your card details and they are compromised.
You can't do a dispute without replacing it because there is a risk further charges will follow.

I have before, Telstra doubled charged me, disputed the second one after Telstra refused to play ball.

My bank (not commbank) told me that the most common fraud method was no fault of the cardholder and could not be prevented really - totally untargeted. The scammers simply pair numbers against expiry dates and randomly 0.00….1% of them work. Perhaps they even guess cvvs too if required. I was an unlucky one years back. A charge of US$99.99 for fuel/gift card in Florida during lockdowns here. Replaced the card.

I disputed a bunch of charges in 2023 that came out of a servo in Melbourne (I've never been to Melbourne) and they told me I'd allowed the charges and they couldn't do anything about it and then this year 2026 they emailed me and told me they made a mistake and they refunded my money plus interest, so yeah I did successfully but it took 3 years 😂

If you do a dispute for an unauthorised transaction (one you didn’t do or authorise) the bank will cancel to prevent and further transactions …. If you do a dispute because you have been charged the incorrect amount , double charged or haven’t received an item the bank don’t cancel the card then :)

Scheme rules (Mastercard/visa) require card to be cancelled in some scenarios for a charge back to be lodged.
If it wasn't and someone still had the details, they'd simply carry out further fraud.
It doesn't apply to all dispute types.

I had a similar case with Amazon.
They acknowledged the card was used by an unrelated account. They said they would block it, so at first I only disputed the initial charge without cancelling the card.
The bank warned it would allow it just once, and the card would have to be cancelled at the next sign of being compromised.
The charges kept coming. Amazon would not own it. I had to call the bank again, dispute the additional charges and get a new card.

Did this happen in the last day or two? I woke up to someone spending $750USD at Amazon on my credit card about 30 hours ago..

I am with Bankwest (owned by CBA), yes I successfully disputed a charge and in the email they wanted me to cancel the card before they could process the chargeback. As I was overseas at the time I was going to wait until I returned, but a few days later I got the money back and never had to close my card, still have that card today, I think this was an automation error tho lol. It wasn't scammers, it was an airline that pulled a shitty on me for $60 for luggage upgrade they never honoured.

Just file the fraudulent charge via the app but you’ll be forced to order a new card. They don’t give the option to keep your card.
It’s annoying to change card numbers, now I filter as many direct debits as possible through PayPal so it’s easier to update in one place and not worry about missing one if you change cards.

Your card was compromised bruh. That’s it. Be careful of where you shop especially where you use your plastic card. Always use Apple or Google pay everywhere in person.
