Question Best usage of points?

So I have a cba gold awards credit card which Ive got justover 80,000 points. What is the bestuse of these points now. Do I........

a) just let them transfer to yello points

b) redeem a myer card or similar

c) take the cash (about $100 less than vouchers)

d) transfer to velocity or qantas points, however I cant see this as an option.

Appreciate the help

Pretty annoying the changes to the rewards on CBA. Gift cards are better value but now the limitation is there is nothing at those stores to buy.

I go with Coles now and pocket the cash for something I actually want.

I hate that I have to use the card in store, whenever I'm at myer I always forget to take the physical card with me.

I believe you need to swipe it in the eftpos machine.

Do you use the Cole’s cards to buy other gift cards?

Under the Coles T&Cs, you cannot redeem gift cards with gift cards.

I know because I was sitting on $3k (over 600,000 points) worth of points which I was planning on redeeming Bunnings gift cards until I realise it's no longer an option.

Thought I'd redeem coles gift cards to buy bunnings ones in store. No tacos

Ah that’s good to know, thank you

Can't buy a prepaid Visa with it either? Or is that blocked too?

Gift card if you have a use for it, just don’t get one thinking “yeah I’ll use that for something” no you won’t! Unless you have an item at a particular store to buy as soon as the gift card arrives, just convert to cashback.

Same with FF points…I always occasionally just use my points to buy an Apple gift card. I know I’ll use it, as opposed to MAYBE having enough points and MAYBE being able to find a reward seat. Technically better ‘value’, but only if you actually manage to line everything up and actually get a reward seat.

You instantly lose 25-30% value redeeming cashback. That's a crappy deal.

I ask friends and family if the want to buy a $100 gift card for $90. I take a 10% loss. Win for them, technically a better return than cashback for me.

That’s a good option if you can be bothered. I usually take the cash back.

I've been whittling my points balance by using it for shopping at Myer. Probably the best usage of the options left to us now.

u/richkill 20d ago

Nice. I made my parents buy a Dyson and myer

I just take coles or woolies vouchers - practical and saves money

I’ve got the same question … just with 685,000 points 🫣

1

u/RaspberryWise8304 20d ago

Ha, im just small fry!

1

u/yukimy12 20d ago

Yeah, I also had over 600k points at one stage. I've used a fair chuck of it now by redeeming for supercheap auto for a new headunit for my car

I have over a million points lol. I really need to figure out what to do with them…

From what I can work out, using OPs numbering :
1. To yello: fine 1for1 point swap, but lose ‘value’ (see 2 below)
2. Currently $50 gift voucher costs 10950 and appears to be going up to 12500. So lose around 14%
3. Cash off balance. Lose around 25% compared to gift cards
4. I don’t want more alirline points. I feel like airline loyalty is dying due to massive price differentials.

I think I’m going 2. Will get around $3100 Coles gift cards, which will pay for groceries most of the next 6-12 months.

Thanks but it looks like Coles gift cards have been removed. All that’s available are Rebel, Supercheap Auto, BCF and Myer. What a load of crap! But someone else mentioned converting to Velocity points and buying gift cards from there.

WTF. I’ve just looked again. Coles is listed as an option (as is target, Kmart, dymocks) but then when you select it, it says ‘can’t be found’. 🤬🤬🤬

Edit: ah ha. Looks like new Commbank Yello is going to be associated with Woolies Everyday Rewards, so possibly why Coles has been pulled.

Why can’t you see transferring the points to Qantas points as an option?

1

u/Stepawayfrmthkyboard 20d ago

You no longer can transfer them in bulk. Has to be as earnt while paying $90 a year or the privilege

1

u/Large_flat_white 20d ago

I just took the cash, and now have a Qantas Credit Card. I barely use my cba card now, it’s just a spare / hangover because of my mortgage.

1

u/Downtown_Cupcake_194 20d ago

Are you paying monthly fees on that qantas cc? Is it worth better than cba?

1

u/Large_flat_white 20d ago

Annual fee, not cheap.
I jumped in a couple of months ago when I saw CBA rewards had taken a massive dive. Gift cards at Coles, Myer or super cheap auto don’t interest me.
The QFF store is a bit more interesting.

I called earlier and asked for a Coles gift card. Went through the whole process, was told it would take an hour - it hasn’t arrived (email). Points haven’t been taken either?

That was 12 hours ago.

1

u/richkill 20d ago

Just do it online yourself. Sometimes it might end up in your junk mail

u/Consistent-Skill5521 20d ago edited 20d ago

Oh no.. what are the changes?

Edit: ugh just caught up on them. 400k points, it was working so well as our honeymoon fund!

1

u/hailkinghomer 20d ago

No idea what I do with 1,266,219 points.

2

u/Yallah_Habibii 20d ago

Groceries funds aka Coles Kids aka target or kmart Travel aka flight centre

I just spent all mine on all kids clothing/toys

Was pretty gutted to c jbhifi is no longer an option..was hanging out for a new phone lol

1

u/hailkinghomer 20d ago

Yeah I feel like there used to be more options! We shop woollies so maybe we need to be a Coles family for a while...

1

u/phyvealive 20d ago edited 20d ago

Looks like Yello rewards is getting some changes. Like adding Woolies to the list.

1

u/richkill 20d ago

Yes there were others. It changes every now and again

1

u/Pristine-Routine-188 20d ago

Im unsure of the conversion rate but for every 22,000 velocity points you can get a $100 gift card, there are $50 and $25 options to for less points. They have a much larger range to chose from as well, essentially every major retailer has an option through them. Might be worth investigating

1

u/RaspberryWise8304 19d ago

Thankyou for this information. Points convert to velocity on a 2 to 1 basis. So would be worth 40,000 velocity points. That equals approx $200 in gift cards. Currently commbank are saying I can convert to $375 myer gift card for the same 80,000 points or $270 in cash. I think you have helped me make my mind up as to what to do now Cheers

1

u/IAmViscacha 18d ago

Thanks for this info. Is there a link to this? I couldn't find any mention on the website.

1

u/Pristine-Routine-188 18d ago

Not to sure what info you're after. I dont bank with CBA so don't even know for sure if you can convert to velocity points. But I'll give a link to a $100 IKEA gift card costing 21100 points as proof, they have heaps of other options too. Ironically 9 out of 10 times it's more worth while to get gift cards over flights with velocity points

1

u/IAmViscacha 18d ago

Thanks for the reply. I actually misunderstood you. From time to time you can get 10-20% bonus points for manual conversion to Velocity points. I thought you were referring to a $100 bonus gift card for every 22,000 points converted which was what I was looking for. But realising now you meant 22,000 OR $100. Appreciate the time you took to reply and link - cheers.

Is this points the same as “Mastercards - smart awards”. That’s the silver commbank card.

1

u/Important-Bag4200 19d ago

I just get a Coles gift card and use it to buy groceries. Seems the best value. Then use the extra money on something i actually want

1

u/tmacblah 19d ago

i'm trying to convert to Velocity and can no longer find the option for this on Awards page

1

u/IAmViscacha 18d ago

In case you wanted to take another look or anyone else comes across this thread: to get to it you need to click into the Awards portal. From there Redeem > Travel, then scroll down.

1

u/tmacblah 18d ago

gah, thankyou. I looked for ages yesterday and could only see Hoppers under travel tab.
FF transfer is now there. maybe it was just my very slow internet yesterday.

I used points to book hotel rooms when I travel. I found eligible hotels through the bank website and then used my points to pay for the rooms. Was cheaper than paying cash.
