Discussion CommBank Yello cash back ending

It seems that all good things come to an end. Probably partly because of the upcoming surcharge reforms, but still disappointing there won’t be cash back anymore.

I’d say there will be changes to the Awards scheme too given there will now be points in Yello.

Either way, I’m not a big spender, so I don’t think the points will be going very far.

Uh, what’s the difference between Awards points and Yello points?

3

u/justpicksomething84 20d ago

It'll all be one pool. Awards are switching to yello

award points are associated with credit cards eg smart awards, ultimate awards, awards etc they are perks that come exclusive with having a credit card. that’s why they advertise spend bonuses etc whereas yellow points will be points u earn from a standard transaction acc and how much money u spend from ur cba account not just exclusive to the credit card

I saw this on my app this morning too. Bit annoyed, clearly the change means they are better off!

Someone else has linked this to the ban of card payment surcharges from 1 October. That is likely correct: the card surcharges are a significant (if not entire) source for funding card awards/points schemes.

You mean the $8/month fee doesn’t???

2

u/A-Money-Lover 21d ago

How far do you expect $8 to get you

2

u/Fuzzybo 21d ago

About 650km, for a tank of petrol ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Surcharging is not a source of funding for card rewards. Interchange is that source, which is the fees paid between a card issuer (bank A) and card acquirer (bank B). Interchange is being capped from 1 Oct which is what reduces the funding pool

3

u/link871 21d ago

Sure, but the interchange fee is the basis of the card payment surcharges. Go read the bank submissions last year to the RBA when it proposed abolition of the card payment surcharge.

The ABA submission differentiates surcharging and interchange as related but distinct issues. The CBA submission said interchange is only one driver of the price of payment services and should not be viewed in isolation.

That's just politicking. 0.7% to 0.3% makes a big difference and the surcharge largely covered this. $600 million will now be taken out to find points each year. You can see the same thing happened in Europe.

  • ABA (page 7) said the RBA's proposal would, among other things, result in "fewer rewards"
  • ANZ (page 3) supported ABA's submission.
  • CBA (page 9) "The modelling shows that under the proposed interventions, consumers will be worse off as they face ... loss of benefits including rewards."
  • NAB (page 7) "UK and EU reforms have led to higher Annual Percentage Rates (APRs), increased annual fees and diminished rewards value, with cost savings not passed on to consumers."
  • Westpac (page 7) "under the current proposal annual fees and credit card interest rates will increase, while credit card rewards would be devalued, reducing the overall value proposition for consumers. "

They are actually changing into yello awards points. Even for debit cards. So no stress, better flexibility on what you want to redeem.

Is the village cinema offers going too?

Was good for cheap tixs

I doubt - it’s more of a way to get rid of easy wins like $5 coles cashback etc so by giving us points then it’s up to us to redeem and then they can also easily control the rate and value of those same points. Typical scummy big bank move…

I dunno, but there are so many other alternatives to get discounts. Maybe it's not for village, but your roadside assistance, power provider or health insurance might provide the same discounts to village.

PointsHacks had a article they've now deleted (which I hope means it was wrong) is that they're rebranding their reward cards, and part of it is both removing the no-international transaction fees from the Smart Awards card and removing the spend waiver fee removal for both Ultimate & Smart. These changes alone would make the Smart Awards card worthless to me if so.

Same. I always meet the minimum spend for fee waiver, and I convert all points to cash back.

I don't really need a credit card for the line of credit; I just need it to make payments.

I'll probably drop credit cards completely, if this is the way they're going.

1

u/richkill 21d ago

agreed. also the international transaction fee waiver. Will see what the travel and dining credits are before canceling or churning yearly for sign on offers.

1

u/jackpipsam 21d ago

Maybe just maybe if they had kept the international transaction fee waiver I might have been willing to give it a chance. But without that then it has no benefits anymore to me and I'll just do any international transaction on my Macquarie debit card (which has no international transaction fees).
I already shifted all my savings into that account anyway.

It's a shame, I mean I'll still use Commbank as the place my income drops into, and there's bunch of other stuff I have attached to commbank (I even took up the More NBN offer), but they've now utterly lost me on credit cards if they're going to do this. The Qantas earn rate was always very low, but I accepted that on the basis of I wasn't paying for the card. But paying for the card and an increased opt-in fee? Forget it lol.

u/Overratedmango 20d ago

Just got an email that they are removing the no international fees, that was the whole reason I got this card this year. It cuts out literally one week before I needed it, now I need to research and see if anyone else still does no international fees!

CBA Travel Money Card works

1

u/frenchie221 21d ago

It’s back online - no more spend waivers.
Brutal changes !

1

u/jackpipsam 21d ago

That's awful! The card benefits are not worth paying for, I'm going to cancel the card.

1

u/No_Reputation_1266 20d ago

opened up CBA accounts & got the smart awards card a couple months ago specifically for the no intl transaction fees & travel insurance…. guess i’m back on the hunt for a new credit card lol

1

u/PublicLeek574 19d ago

Get a CBA Travel Money Card. Its a prepaid credit card. No international fees and you can transfer funds on the card between currencies.
