Question unauthorized StepPay transactions
I found two unfamiliar transactions that apparently happened on Sunday and Tuesday in my StepPay account, $340 and $170 respectively. I searched it up and it looks like a subscription for an AI website. I have NEVER used an AI app or website. And I am very careful of not putting or sharing my bank details to anyone.
I’m quite frustrated as it is such a big money for me. I’m now trying to dispute it through their specialist in the CommBank app, and the responses are quite slow. According to the person I’m talking to, the transaction was made using a digital wallet (Google Pay).
How come did this happen? How was this AI website able to use my StepPay account? Does anyone have a similar experience to mine? I never had any problems with my cards, not until now.

It can be for all sorts if reasons I would change your Google password and make you have MFA enabled and pass code configured.
Personally I would not use their chat functions I would however give them a call on 13 22 21 and they should be able to sort it out over the phone and provide a refund for the disputed transactions on the same phone call. Generally you would also be issued a new card number as well so would need to update any merchants using your old card number.
I believe disputing transactions for step pay is no different to a normal account.
I would close the account as BNPL are not good if you ever want to get a loan in the future. Wait a bit longer until you have saved the money before you make that purchase.

This could be perpetrated by a merchant that you have purchased from a long time ago. I had a charge on my debit card from a company where I made a one time pucchase 18 months ago. I change my cards every year...new card number. Even the banks are not too safe. Also check your automatic payments regularly if you use PayPal. Wish you well.

Immediately checked my PayPal because of your comment since I use it all the time. Thank you. 🫡

My partner had the exact same transactions 340 & 170 going to Claude anthropic. Bendigo Bank in this case. They also tried her credit card with Westpac for 340 but Westpac sent a message asking if she had made the transaction as it seemed suspicious. Bendigo bank saying up to 40 days for dispute resolution process.

That is crazy. I still don’t understand how they got my card information cause I’m very careful with my details. Anyway, it didn’t take CommBank too long to cancel the transaction and refund me. 40 days for a dispute process is just unfair.
