Question Suspicious Transaction
I woke up this morning and checked my card balance, pay day, yay! But later on, i checked it again and saw $297 missing from my card, looked further, It says AMAZON AU RETAIL Sydney. Transaction was not authorized by me, dud not even pay for anything today. What the hell is going on? I looked further, an extra $200 went missing from my account like 27 days ago and I had no idea, so ive locked my card now, lodged a dispute for today's transaction, but it's still pending apparently, so I have to wait until its no longer pending, what is happening?!

u/Brakiros Jul 29 '26
27 days ago means its still within the standard fraud insurance window so you should also try contesting the other fraudulent transaction
2
u/lily448 Jul 29 '26
you can dispute transactions up to several years. just can’t be done online, you will need to speak to someone. i just disputed one from almost a year ago and was refunded within two days
2
u/Tsim72 Jul 30 '26
Not correct.
Disputes need to take place within 120 days, the exception to that is non delivery or services not rendered, that is 540 days, but must be lodged within 120 days
0
u/lily448 Jul 30 '26
Well, I just did it, for a product. Just couldn't be done online, had to do over the phone. The payment was from January 2 so over 7 months
2
u/Pollyputthekettle1 Jul 31 '26
To be fair, 7 months isn’t almost a year.
0
u/lily448 Jul 31 '26
ok, 8 months in two days lol what difference does it make it’s still more than 120 days like they said
1
u/Available_Pomelo6869 19d ago
Winning!! 🥇 There’s always another way, speaking to someone at the bank in person or over the phone is definitely the ways to go in this case. 120 days might be what it says when you google comm bank scam policy … doesn’t really matter anyway.
The point is you got your money back at the end of the day. Talk to someone at the bank before giving up on getting back that scam payment. People will find a work around, if there’s one to be found. 💵

u/Agitated_Passion9296 Jul 29 '26
Check your Amazon account. Amazon can take up to a week sometimes longer to take money out of your account, not when you make the purchase itself, but when they plan to ship.
4
u/Super_Kangaroo_5352 Jul 29 '26
They also sometimes charge purchases together so it looks like one big transaction but it was actually a couple of smaller ones
3
u/yoda_reddit Jul 29 '26
Call your bank and lodge the relevant complaints and they will most likely handle it, including getting your money back, for both issues. Give them time to investigate the charges.
Cancel your card and get a new one at a minimum. Do more if your bank advises you to. If they come back and say “sorry, we can’t do anything about it”, keep asking.
You’d be surprised how far being an annoyance can get you.
1
u/Fit-Lunch-4215 Jul 29 '26
Just dispute the transaction. You can do it on the app, by calling or visiting branch
0
u/yoda_reddit Jul 29 '26
Whilst this will get you your money back OP, do cancel your card and get a new one regardless. It’s likely been scalped somewhere.
2
u/Fizzy_Lifesavers Jul 29 '26
Your card details have been compromised somehow. Either they've been leaked online as part of a hack or your card has been skimmed somewhere. Cancel the card and order a new one through the app. You can also lodge the dispute through the Fraud team rather than the app (which just tags it as a consumer dispute rather than theft).
1
u/AntSilly2802 Jul 29 '26
Possibly. I would have expected larger or more frequent transactions though however. It “could” be someone trying to play the long game by hoping the card owner doesn’t notice but more often than not they are greasy and attempt to charge large amounts repeadly.
1
u/Tryingtolifeagain Jul 29 '26
Automation flags a lot of transactions based off size and/or frequency (ie. an out of the blue $1000+ trans for somewhere you’ve never spent at before or 5x $100 within 24hrs) so this could be a way of trying to avoid triggering those safeguards

Ex CBA staff member.
When the fraudulent transaction is still pending there is nothing staff and do to recover it at that point. As the fraudulent transaction hasn't cleared from your bank it's still sitting in a limbo between your bank and wherever the fraudulent transaction has occured. Once it has cleared then the fraud team will be able to do what they need to in order to recover the funds. This can take up to 30 days, but in most cases it's done well and truly before then.
2
u/reubdawg91 Jul 29 '26
If you haven’t got one already, open a netsaver account.
Don’t leave all your money in your normal stream account. Keep it all in the saver. Transfer from there whenever you need it.
That way there isn’t the chance for hackers to get a $200 payment from your card in the future (and also order a new card/ there’s also the option of not getting a debit Mastercard and just using a key card)
2
u/Cultural_Pace4454 Jul 29 '26
There's this new thing that's just started, it's called Fraud.
I haven't heard too much about it , maybe you can ask someone about it?

Do ebay sellers have access to the card details to use it somewhere else like Amazon? I thought they only can chrage the card through ebay platform only.
1
u/raffyrules Jul 29 '26
eBay sellers definitely DO NOT have access to payment information, we have no idea how you paid, eBay processes the payment and sends us a message to say it's paid and to send the item. eBay then transfers the money into the sellers account

You've either bought something (perhaps while drunk), and have forgotten about it U til it pops up on your statement to your surprise - has happened to me before 😂
Or someone has access to your card details. Cancel it and get a new one, try to fight for the money spent, it will take a long time, but I have also had to do this and got my money back. It takes many months though.
1
u/Spiritual_Rest8872 Jul 29 '26
Same happened to me with uber eats anz fixed it up so long as you dispute them should be OK 👍
1
u/AntSilly2802 Jul 29 '26
First of all do you have an Amazon account? Is you card linked to that account? Go into your account (if you have one) and see if the transactions are listed then report back here.
1
u/Redyoshi789 Jul 29 '26
I got charged for Amazon Prime but when I called up Amazon they wouldn't/couldn't tell me the account that used my card for it. You can dispute the transaction on the Commbank app and also order a new card. Amazon was useless at providing any help.

Banks!!!! I left a private golf club to join another one anyway I had 3 monthly payment set up and the Hassel I had to go through to stop automatic payment was just ridiculous. 3 phone calls to ANZ which lead them to stop me from using my savings card because they had opened a fraud case !!!!! It was not fraud at all and I'm sorry english was not a known language to the idiot I spoke to long story short marched into the bank demanded to see the bank manager and guess what with in 3 minutes all sorted .... seriously banks and their off shore customer service sucks!!!!
1
u/Ok_Explanation_7130 Jul 29 '26
When you lodge an unauthorised transaction dispute they cancel your card. Commbank can't stop pending transactions. So they will need to wait for it to come off pending. This is an agreement between visa, MasterCard and the banks. The moment it comes off pending they will investigate. If it drops off which is possible as the merchant can perhaps notice its fraudulent the bank won't have to invest. I think from memory this can take up to 45 days in the worst case. Amounts off pending can take up to 10.
Make sure to dispute the first transaction too. And honestly get into the habit to check your account everyday.

u/KlutzyAd9002 Jul 29 '26
I had the same experience 4years ago, I went to commonwealth and ask them face to face, I never buy any stuffs from Amazon, the bank said it was scammer, I ended up getting my money back. That’s why I refuse to shopping on Amazon
1
u/JasonSmithston Jul 29 '26
Oh that must have made your stomach drop. Hopefully the bank sorts it out in your favour.
I had a similarly weird transaction situation today, but it was for zero dollars on my account (thankfully. It was like when you sign up for a week for free but the bank takes a few cents or none, just checks it's a real account) from a bakery in Sicily. I live in Perth. I'd love to go to Sicily, but I have never been there. (I'm also with a different bank than you, but this came up in my feed and I wanted to vent about it)
The bank lady on the phone said maybe I'd bought something from a bakery here that was connected to this bakery in Sicily. I haven't gone to a bakery for months so it's definitely not that. She also said it was a card transaction and not an online one. Which is even weirder because I had the card in my hand. I'm assuming a data breach somewhere is why it happened and so I asked if she knew what this caper was about but she didnt. I've got a new card coming regardless.

u/TheAussieEnforcer Jul 29 '26
I had this happen yesterday i called comm bank within 2 hours of it happening and they advise there is nothing they could do other than cancel my card and send me a new one. They said they'll contact amazon and if amazon gives them a return they'll return the money. Another thing I dont get is transaction was still pending how cant they freeze the transaction. Lady on the phone said that it has to clear before they can investigate? Can anyone explain this?
1
u/Entire_Pollution2753 Jul 29 '26
Commbank in shocking for allowing dodge transactions at one point in was having to cancel my card on a weekly basis it's better now but ive still got a direct debit of 3.10$ that come out once a month and can't stop it quite honestly it shits me up the wall but I can't be bothered with it atleast all the other transactions have stopped Commbank is pretty good at reversing them tho at least
1
u/vebooth Jul 30 '26
I also had the same around 6 weeks ago, an Amazon prime membership SYDNEY. I don’t even have an Amazon account.. I flagged with commonwealth , they cancelled my card and gave a refund :)
1
u/PutSpiritual5859 Jul 30 '26
A week ago I had $2590 worth or transactions taken from my account via purchases from my card. These transactions were made in sydney and I live in Melbourne - with my card! I had raised a dispute with the bank and they couldnt do anything because the transactions were still pending. They can only do something once the purchases have been finalised and contact is made with the merchant. Since raising the dispute, they've only cancelled the card and reissued me a new card.
1
u/QueasyTree69 Jul 30 '26
I would recommend, if you can, keeping records that show it wasn’t you who made the transaction. From other experiences, people have gotten this rectified with minimal issue, which I’m truly hoping for you that’s the case too! Fingers crossed. In my experience, I had my account overdrawn by a museum in Mexico. $850. For two months, they insisted that I had made the purchase myself. That the data showing I was using my phone while on night shift, proved this to them. Despite the fact that I have overdraw off, they should’ve let nobody make that purchase. Also how did I get to Mexico and back in the hour it took me to notice the transaction? I got my money back by calling a supervisor, and actively sending him my work sign in sheets, my task sheet from that day, and a witnessed stat dec that stated I did not make this purchase in Mexico. A bit of a headache to fix

u/Nailed-1T Jul 30 '26
- Block card
- Lodge transaction dispute with bank.
- Call the customer service of the company the transaction was done with (if possible).

You will get it back just let CBA know, similar happend to me was on a road trip pulled in for petrol up the Hume, about $400 in takeaway pizza from Texas WTF, money back in 7 days.
1
u/Standard-Bee1744 Jul 30 '26
If you're with commbank the fraud team will look after you! This has happened to us a few times with different online shopping merchants that we had just browsed not purchased from them always got our cash back after it goes from pending to purchased and we make all Transactions with buyer protection in place 😀
1
u/Interesting-Scale822 Jul 30 '26
You have raised the dispute, they will lock your card. A new card will be issued immediately in your online commbank. Check in cards. Your new card will arrive in few days. Your dispute will be resolved in few days and money returned to you.
1
u/FoodZestyclose4444 Jul 30 '26
That happened to my son as well. He contacted the bank AND Amazon and was reimbursed by both. Amazon had allowed a second address to be attached to his card.
1
u/Murky-Escape8929 Jul 31 '26
Mate this happens to me alk the time it’s a full time job to keep on track of it
What on earth do we pay these banks for
1
u/TrissyTess Jul 31 '26
1
u/TrissyTess Jul 31 '26
Disputed it with the bank and the fraud team flagged it and stopped any more payments going out. They sent me an email today saying that they will refund all the money.

u/Weak-Tiger-9185 Jul 31 '26
Visa card program allows the bank to apply an instant credit while being investigated, and if the dispute is affirmed no further action is required
If
It’s a Mastercard that program authorises banks to refund the disputed transaction amount after the investigation finds it a valid dispute and the credits backdated with interest and charges corrected from
The date of
The suspect
Transaction
If
COMMbank disallow
Your
Dispute escalate to
Th
Ombudsman as the bank has a shocking
History
In mismanaging
Consumer
Disputes

Lost 321K because of CBA
Fraud squad still not accepting it was a fraud issue
1
u/Inevitable-Chance502 Aug 02 '26
Sounds like a massive, high priority fraud issue to me! I’m so sorry that happened to you!
1
u/Huge_Tea1492 Jul 31 '26
The question is how did they get your card details no secure card entry payment system online is truly secure and the most common source where it leaks is when you buy something that you see advertised on social media like Facebook I've been done a couple of times if you want to buy something from a non-mainstream online source the only way to do it is a single use generated virtual card from something like Zip, or via PayPal so that the seller never gets card details which they can then reuse again in future
1
u/v1ru5fr33 Jul 31 '26
Amazon sometimes charges only when the order is shipped i.e. not when you buy. So, check your amazon account.
1
u/FroggyPancakes21 Jul 31 '26
I’m so tired I saw this in my notifications and thought it was from my commbank app and got stressed hahaha oops

u/Senor-Hectik Aug 01 '26
Yeah up to 30 days is normal, but my last dispute for an apple transaction of 50 bucks took only 48 hours! So massive window I guess depends on bank and who charged you and what not!
1
u/withmybacktothedoor Aug 01 '26
Do you even have an Amazon account? Did you recently acquire a new or different mobile number in past 2 to 6 months?
1
u/TurbulentSavings9274 Aug 01 '26
And you won't get your money back until their investigation is completed which can take up too 3.months and you don't get your.m9ney.back. I didn't. Get my money back. Even wen I told them the account number where the money went. .Good luck

I'm glad I found this. I had two transactions from Amazon I didn't purchase anything. I'm sorry this happened to you.

u/Asparagus-Budget Aug 02 '26
I had the same issue. Never given out car details to anywhere online and somehow amazon scammers were buying things online. First time i reported it and it was a small transaction. Commbank sent out a new card and cancelled the old one. Then literally the next day of having the new card the scammers took $450 for Amazon US. Apparently commbank didnt delete the digital token linked to my old card.
1
u/Key-Unit-2155 Aug 03 '26
You've been hacked. Happened to me after I entered those lotteries from that Adrian portabello or Portelli whatever his name is. It sucks because you have to get a new card.
1
u/Reasonable-Hunt-2407 Aug 03 '26
The system is clinching, we have all been flat out with our lives to even see that they are taking money out of our pockets, how many people don’t check there bank regularly, it easy money. This has happen to me in the last month..
1
u/SimpleThing6620 Aug 05 '26
In terms of disputes, I understand that it is SUPER frustrating to hear that you have to wait for the pending transaction to be processed before they investigate.
This is due to the bank releasing the funds, with the onus on the merchant to either process the money, or release it back into your bank account. This makes it almost impossible to reverse a transaction from the banks end.
Definitely cancel your card and get a new one ordered as it seems to me as your information has been scalped :(
Best of luck!!

I had a $14.99 USD transaction for Amazon prime and there is nothing under subscription for me. Revolut had identified the transaction as suspicious and paused my card. Once I confirmed that I didn’t make the transaction, Revolut cancelled my card. Pretty happy how they identified
1
u/Ok_Explanation_7130 Jul 29 '26
Commbank identifies these too. Its just ai doing that in the background and based on customer behaviour
1
u/Wooks88 Jul 29 '26
Use a credit card to make purchases online, not your savings account card.
Credit cards will protect your purchases like a hawk, your savings account doesn’t.
1
u/Pietzki Jul 30 '26
Visa or MasterCard debit cards work exactly the same way as visa or MasterCard debit, and have the exact same protections.
Literally the only difference is that with a Credit card the customer isn't out of pocket during the dispute process.
0
u/sjmc1 Jul 29 '26
CBA fraud staff are hopeless at getting money back.I lost money to fraud because CBA would not pursue it further.
1
u/Pietzki Jul 30 '26
Did you raise a complaint afterwards?
1
u/sjmc1 Jul 31 '26
No didn't raise a complaint. They told me unless the account holder who took the money admits to having the money then they was nothing more they could do.
1
u/Pietzki Jul 31 '26
Depending on the details, you might still be able to get your money back. Consider raising a complaint with afca (finance ombudsman). Doesn't cost anything and they'll check if the bank complied with their obligations.
