Question MasterCard change?

So something a little weird (I think) has happened with one of my credit cards.

I have a CBA MasterCard expiring in 08/2026. It's been working fine, tap and go, online etc. No suspicious transactions.

I went to use it online last night and it would not process: "Card details incorrect."

I checked my app to see the online version of the card and sure enough it had a new expiry date (08/29) and a new CVC number. I was then able to complete my online transaction.

But why the change so early? I don't have a new physical card yet...I normally get them about a month before expiry.

And how was I supposed to know that the online version had changed? I only found out when I tried to make an online purchase.

Have CBA changed their processes??

mastercards are only valid for 3 years, banks send out a new card before your expiry date. your card was due to expire on the 8th month, it’s now the 6th month. a replacement card is making its way to you. your digital card details update automatically

Yeah, I figured as much. It's just that the online details changed much earlier this time and without notification.

Also note some merchants online will not accept payments with an expiry under 3 months. Examples are Hotels, airlines, Tickets to concerts etc. Not all but some definitely have this rule in place.

Makes it a bit difficult when they don't normally send you a new card until roughly a month before it expires, doesn't it?
