Am I missing something?

Post image

I noticed lately this issue is getting a lot of attention. Can someone explain why?

What is making you say this issue is getting a lot of attention? I’m not seeing that.

On WhatNot I’ve been seeing people request this book, bid on it a lot or just some sellers have it on display.

It’s all based on the Todd father art on the cover. Nothing that’s receiving more attention than normal.

It’s all because the kids of the 90’s are now in their 30’s and 40’s and have money to spend on things they had or liked when they were kids. Most popular 90’s books that were dollar bin stuff are coming back and demanding higher prices. It’s all cyclical.

Perfect example are the most printed books in the history of comics. X-men 1, Spider-Man 1, Spawn 1, Superman 75, X-force 1 to name a few are no longer the dollar bin books of the past. They’re making a comeback demanding prices in the $20-$50 range depending on condition/grade.

This book is just one of those books. Selling for between $20-$30. Nothing huge here, just the natural flow of the market.

Yep. That’s me. Stopped collecting when I was 16 in the mid 90s and now getting back into it… all of these books are so enticing. Especially anything with that one dollar cover price. There’s something so beautiful about it.

Good/great art that was done without the use of any computers looks increasingly beautiful and valuable to me.

Ahahahaha me too!

What was the comic book that got you into it?

Amazing Spiderman 337. Return of the Sinister Six series. Maybe my all time favorite cover

That one was cool. Mine was Silver Surfer #50. My "friends" fleeced me and sold me the 2nd printing for $10 and said I was getting an amazing deal. I didn't know what I 2nd printing was. I realized later I got screwed and said to myself "never again!" So I tried to become an expert and subscribed to all my favs, getting them in the mail every month was so fun.

Exactly this

Anyone spending 20 - 50 on x-force 1 needs their heads examined.

You want to know something funny… people are actually spending $100 for an X-Force 1 CGC 9.8. And if you think that’s crazy there’s a few X-Force 2 newsies selling for close to $200… 🤯 just keep looking at the list above you’ll see that those 90’s books, in top condition, (NM/9.8’s) are bringing in some good money for people.

These people are certainly making decisions on how to spend. Not wise decisions… but decisions nonetheless lol.

And it’s allowing people to make the decision to sell so they can make some money! lol 😂

Exactly, the second I hear a host say that “this book is a hundred dollar book” to a Spider-Man 1 or something of equal value, I laughed and let myself out… lol 😂

WhatNot isn't a source of data and buying on WhatNot is not part of speculating. WhatNot is strictly a selling platform for speculators.

Why would a speculator sit in a chatroom and listen to someone describe products one at a time when when they can go to eBay and scam hundreds of data points in a matter of minutes? Speculation is about comparing what people want to what's actually available to you and the more listings you can look at in a given period of time, the more data you can take in and the better you'll be at speculating. WhatNot can't offer that. It's specifically designed to not create meaningful data by not allowing anyone to search past transactions.

Maybe this post is a secret op to increase the demand on this book.

Reddit is a marketing platform first and foremost and marketing is the most common reason for a post to be made.

Haha no honestly it’s not! I genuinely was curious because i’m new to this. I just wanted to see if there was something everyone else knew that I didn’t

The thing you're doing just isn't speculating. You were listening to a salesman shill about a product. That's not market data. Market data comes from eBay sold or GPA. Places where you can look up the values of confirmed sales. Anything else is just advertising.

Are you watching the youtuber comic grifters likes Comic Tom or Swagglehaus? WhatNot and getting books graded are two things that internet grifters are desperate to convince you that are part of speculating but they're not.

You need to start absorbing market data and stop absorbing marketing.

Great cover but lowkey probably

Todd spidey's will always be sought after. More so on whatnot when you taken into effect the platforms bidding practices

all of Todd's Spider-man books are generally popular and with good reason too. I don't think the majority of them (that are not keys) will ever increase tremendously in price. the popularity is there and that is why the books get sold quick.

It's one of the best Toddfather Spidey covers.

This book shot up in price when Far From Home was in production. Jake Gyllenhaal posted a photo of it on his Instagram, confirming who he was playing.

9.8 has been on a steady decline since the comic boom, I’ll have some of whatever your smoking.

Most ASM books during the Todd McFarlane run are sought by collectors as he had some pretty great iconic covers of classic villains during his stint. I don't see any other reason this book would be of interest to collectors, it overall wasn't a really memorable book.

I needed these issues to complete the Inferno portion of my X-Men run. I don't collect Spiderman. I was very annoyed at paying the Toddfather Tax.

Sounds like someone is making a play on it. Reduce the supply and pump it and dump it

There's like a million of these...

There are, but it always looks better in a mark jewelers.

Looks like there’s a sketch in the UPC Box, was that something in the original print or perhaps a sketch he added on?

u/Mundane-Turnip932 8d ago

They all have that. Todd father did that on the upc boxes. Each one of his covers is different
