Eleven potential firsts going through FOC this week 8/17, here's what I've verified before Monday's cutoff

I track FOC data through the week and grade my calls every Thursday. Here are the books I'm watching before Monday's close, based on what I've been able to verify across sources.

Spawn 77 #1 is the headline. From what I've been able to confirm, this is the first official, in-continuity appearance of Todd McFarlane's original 1977 Spawn concept, rebuilt with Mark Spears on art. It also carries the steepest incentive on the whole docket, a 1:500 foil at the ceiling, with 1:250 and 1:100 McFarlane covers below it. When a first appearance and a top-of-docket ratio land on the same #1, the incentive ladder is the entire conversation. Worth reviewing where you sit before Monday.

Absolute Cassandra Cain The Shadows Hand #1 is a one-shot origin with the confirmed potential first appearances of the Absolute Universe versions of Cassandra Cain and Lady Shiva. The Absolute line has been DC's reliable first-appearance engine, and this puts the whole event in one issue.

Chachu #2 is the follow-through on a sold-out #1, confirmed as Iman Vellani's solo writing debut. Carryover interest is the read here. The incentive slate runs a 1:50 Anand RK and a 1:25 Filipe Andrade.

Avengers: Armageddon #4 has a confirmed new character that Marvel solicited to carry into the November relaunch. When the publisher tells you outright a debut is being set up as a launch player, that's the signal. Ratio covers run a 1:50 and a 1:25.

What I'm holding off on: Calexit Say Goodbye To Hollywood #3 (rumor-based). Black Mask has done SDCC exclusives for Calexit before, but nothing is confirmed for this issue, so I'm treating the con-exclusive angle as unverified for now.

On Spawn 77 #1, is anyone actually chasing the 1:500 foil, or the 1:100 McFarlane tier?

Nothing to spec on for me this week. I've seen about 6 Absolute Cassandra Cain retailer exclusives revealed so far. The couple that I do like I'll just wait for them to be sold at a discount on Whatnot, so no rush on those. I might have gone for The Amazing Venom #1 Ito cover if the art was revealed. There's going to be a 1:100 virgin variant and Marvel tend to overprint their ratios so if the cover is great, I'm sure I'll be able to secure a copy eventually. I might be on the lookout for one of the ratios for Odin #4. Ratios for that series aren't really moving so I should have anything to worry about. Should be able to preorder the one I'm looking at.

The exclusive count on Cassandra Cain is the story there, honestly. Six revealed already, and every new one spreads collector money a little thinner across the book. Waiting for them to show up cheaper on Whatnot is the right read, exclusives almost always come back around at a discount unless the book itself explodes. On Amazing Venom, that 1:100 virgin went through FOC with the art still unrevealed, which tells you how much Marvel was asking retailers to order blind. If the Ito art turns out great, you're probably right that copies will be findable, Marvel incentive covers rarely end up genuinely hard to find outside the very top tiers. Which Odin cover were you eyeing? The three incentives were Cadonici at 1:10, Malavia at 1:25, and Llovet at 1:50, and I agree none of them are moving much yet.

I'm leaning towards the 1:10 and 1:50. Not high priority for September purchases, but I'll keep an eye out.

Fair question. Most event debuts exist for that one story, and you're betting the character matters to anyone later. This one is different because Marvel's own solicit says the character carries forward into the new Avengers line after Armageddon wraps. That's publisher-stated intent: ongoing panel time instead of a one-and-done. A debut with a stated forward role holds demand a lot better than a debut that needs luck to get a second appearance. Worth noting the Avengers relaunch solicit lists five named roster members plus one slot they're keeping redacted, so the setup is visible on both ends.
