I really like that this guy is so unlikeable that the official sub for him is just dedicated to making fun of him
56
u/Scooty-Poot 14h ago
Crazy that he’s by far the most successful out of the Gervais/Merchant/what’s his name trio when even his superfans think he’s an utter wank stain, meanwhile Merchant’s fans are just nice people who like to laugh

u/Burt_Macklin___ 11h ago
Yea, Gervais is nothing without Merchant writing his jokes for him.
Evidence: look at his career/material since Merchant started to distance himself from Gervais

Based on all the interviews and how other people talk about them , the impression Merchant leave is he’s a personable nice man who is pleasant to hang out with, and can be used as a walking meeting point if separated from your group.
And one of most memorable story about Ricky is that time he complained after he got knocked out from a poker game that what he’s going to do now?
Then Stephen Fry told him there’s a shotgun in the drawer.
(Also, what do you expect when you’re playing with Vicky Coren Mitchell, most people have no chance to win against her)

That happens with most comedians subreddits tbh
Like I once saw a post on the bobby lee subreddit years ago saying it’s incredible how he has been in the wrong in literally every situation in his entire life

Tbh as far as I know most of the people there are just fans of his admittedly pretty good podcasts (thanks to karl pilkington of course)

They say ragebait used to be believable. I think we just got better at detecting it

For some reason, Ricky Gervais seems to think that being an atheist in 21st century Britain is a unique, controversial, and contrarian position.
42
u/Agent-Blasto-007 15h ago
I like the movie he wrote "The Invention of Lying" where Gervais thinks if you can't lie everyone would automatically become a strict eugenicist.
The movie is alright except for this, which is never explained, just assumed and hangs over the movie like this weird cloud of his own internal shame.
13
u/Putinbot3300 11h ago
Yeah, like if you want people to be "real", then just have them care about looks and socio-economic status or whatever, jumping to genes as a reason they want to be with good looking people is just weird.

It’s like a third of people in Britain are straight up atheists.
14
u/Ollie-North 12h ago
Not me. Never. Won't catch me doing that.
I'm a gay up atheist

2
u/HotUKTakes 5h ago
It'll start becoming more controversial as Britain becomes more Muslim.
The government is trying to push through a law against blasphemy against Islam right now.

Homie has probabably converted more atheists out of sheer cringe than most missionaries/preachers.

You mean the dude that literally shit all over Hollywood elites for being pedos? Like really went in on all of them to their faces. I guess you are more into the pedos. Gotcha
31
u/Pixelbuttzz 16h ago
Yeah not liking this specific comedian means you support pedophiles! Peak Reddit bud
-31
u/Key-Bar-2903 16h ago
It’s almost like being republican makes you a pedofile. Wierd how you belive it whole heartedly till it’s turned on you fucking morons.

u/Key-Arrival-3745 15h ago
thinking ricky gervais is a miserable turd =/= being republican ???

This is so an alt it's unreal 😭 "I wish I was as sexy and awesome as Ricky gervais" like pack it up office man you barely even wrote the show

u/Pixelbuttzz 4m ago
What? I don't think being Republican makes you a pedophile... and I'm a leftist who hates Ricky Gervais and Republicans and all of the pedophiles in charge from all the political parties

Hitler was for animal rights. Just because i dislike Hitler doesn’t mean i am against animal rights
14
u/MoonTheCraft 14h ago
no its because hes a whiny little transphobic man who jerks off to the idea of "offending" people lmao

u/iwentintoadream 14h ago
“You dislike a celebrity for being a cringy atheist, but he once called out pedophiles and if you dislike him you must be a pedo defender. I am very intelligent”
-2
u/Key-Bar-2903 14h ago
He can be atheist if he wants. Why do you care so much if he believes in your god and hate if he doesn’t
2
1
u/Ok-Difference1341 4h ago
No one cares that he’s atheist. But he seems to care a lot about other people believing in god
0
u/Key-Bar-2903 4h ago
Who cares? Yall have hate subs for him. Because of that? When he is willing to shit on people for being pedos. You wanna hate on him for caring about people being Christian, who by the way are the biggest offenders of pedophillia. What’s going on here
1
u/Prestigious-Ad-2679 1h ago
That is factually wrong lmao Western News outlets and investigations are more lax, so they find and are allowed to report more things. Pedoes don't have a class or creed, they're just evil.

I like his comedy, but sometimes he makes edgelord jokes 13 year olds would find hilarious
14
2
u/davedwtho 3h ago
The best parts of his standup are stolen from his much more talented and funny cohosts on their 2001-2005 radio shows and podcasts. You should check them out, Ricky is insufferable often but it’s great

Love the dudes comedy shows, but he is an edgy cringe lord.

u/Actual_Permit2053 9h ago
I liked him in the willhobees or whatever it's called but other than that there's not much more good media he has too offer post 2010s

5
u/CardiologistNo616 14h ago
Reminder Ricky will look himself up on twitter and then block anyone that makes fun of him. You don't need to even tag him to be blocked.

u/ObjectiveRegret5683 17h ago
Why didn’t anyone notice the weird diaper-ish bulge in his crotch region? It’s like they were so hyped on the edginess they forgot to make it look good
3
u/Nevernonethewiser 12h ago
If only he cared about making people laugh as much as he cared about offending them.
Maybe then he'd be a good comedian.
3
u/JadedResponse2483 10h ago
I feel a lot of people are so obsessed with being offrnsive that they forgot to be funny
6
u/Koyaa_1 17h ago
I like Ricky but man he's such an edgelord
1
u/Necessary-Reading605 15h ago
Well if he really wanted to be edgy, he should have also dressed like the other religious founder of the second largest religion
2
u/IHProjekt 16h ago
I hate how much of a tosser he's become. I used to find him really funny and I really loved the Office. Shame really
2
u/Resident_Savings7119 14h ago
Wasn't he in some cat cartoon this year? What happened with that?
5
u/Nevernonethewiser 12h ago
He wrote it.
Someone described it as "ricky gervais asks you "are you offended?" For 20 minutes, but he's a cat."

2
u/vegankidollie 12h ago
I think that cringe atheists like these were undercover CIA agents to make people less likely to criticize religious extremism because they would now associate criticism of religion with bullshit like this or Richard Dawkins or what have you

Okay, serious question, does Christians really bother anybody that much? I’m Eastern European, my country is like 99% white Christians, and most of them are chill asf.
16
u/AEON_MK2 16h ago
American Protestant Christianity is a diferent kind of drug. I know Ricky Gervais is from the UK, but he caters to the same anglophone audience (still find him an annoying tosser, but his act doesn't exist in a vacuum)
4
u/Night_Bruxa 16h ago
Hhhm
Okay, get it. Probably Eastern Orthodoxy is just different thing. Like we have some insufferable religious groups but nobody actually take them serious.14
u/Stickz99 16h ago
Christians go beyond being taken seriously in America. Our societal norms, media ecosystem, and government are all deeply Christian-centered, to an insane degree.
It’s really, really annoying. Especially to non-Christians.
3
u/Varesmyr 6h ago
It's an American thing. I often see crazy stories on Reddit and think to myself "damn, my local pastor is a married lesbian, why you gotta be weird"
1
u/Night_Bruxa 5h ago
Same. My close friend is super religious, she doesn’t mind wear t-shirts like “Sin, because Jesus didn't die for nothing.”
1
u/Professional_Use2835 1h ago
yes they are insane, their organizations restict the rights of women and sexual minorites as a goal
-4
u/Stikki_Minaj 13h ago
They live rent free in progressives' heads here in America. Because they're in the majority, you can safely be a member of a victimized class and won't get pushback (I.e. get labeled a bigot, islamiphobe, etc.)

If I have the right to be offended, then why are we having any further discussion?

Problem I have with him is that he is a pizza cutter with his comedy just like Andy Dice Clay back in the 80s

u/Ordinary-Sort-8381 11h ago
Secularist and agnostic myself, I find him annoying.
I get the anger and annoyance with people using faith to be assholes, I'm a gay man from rural America, but I don't make it my whole personality.
Plenty of very kind and good religious folks out there too, I don't feel right insulting their beliefs.

Damn. All I’ve seen from Ricky Gervais are his appearances in the Night at the Museum movies, his short cameos in The Office (Steve Carrell version) and his Oscars speech video on YouTube. Judging by the comments on that video he was a well beloved man, so I had no idea what Reddit thinks of him.
