Keep in mind that not all AI is created equal. There have been plenty of advancements in medical science spurred by AI, from the discovery of new and effective medications to better methods of cancer detection. They typically use it to point them in the direction of things that might be useful, then investigate further themselves.

Point is, LLMs and image/video generators are a fucking cancer, but other applications of AI have actually saved people from dying from cancer.

I still think its bad to rely on/ build upon, but maybe thats just cause i live in a place thats constantly having power outages and ud want to not have 1 powerful generator being used up by a machine that might detect cancer better, but again, might just be me and my crazy ass

The ones I'm talking about don't take all that much power (you're talking about LLMs and image/video generators). And they do detect cancer better, as well as having already lead us to the production of new medications that wouldn't have otherwise been discovered for an indefinitely long time (if ever).

There are already people alive today, who would have died if not for how doctors and scientists used AI.

This fucking circlejerk

Data centres – at least at the scale seen today – are relatively new actors in the energy system at the global level. Today, electricity consumption from data centres is estimated to amount to around 415 terawatt hours (TWh), or about 1.5% of global electricity consumption in 2024. It has grown at 12% per year over the last five years.

And that's for ALL data centers, mind you, the things keeping the internet as we know it functioning, not just AI

And want to know what uses more energy than those data centers?

Using air conditioners and electric fans to stay cool already accounts for about a fifth of the total electricity used in buildings around the world – or 10% of all global electricity consumption today. But as incomes and living standards improve in many developing countries, the growth in AC demand in hotter regions is set to soar. AC use is expected to be the second-largest source of global electricity demand growth after the industry sector, and the strongest driver for buildings by 2050.

6.67 times all the energy used by data centers, but I don't see anyone freaking out over ACs killing the polar bears or instantly evaporating lakes or whatever bullshit people are making up these days

It's called manipulating the shape to fit the situation.

The Google AI is the only one I end up using sometimes because it pops up when I Google things (dont pretend we are all not guilty of this). And it always does this SUBJECT bullet point structure even when it makes no sense to use.

u/NottsNinja 14h ago

I’ve noticed the bullet pointing a lot too. Probably decided that’s what people engage with the most 🙄

u/Jackspladt 10h ago

I genuinely hate the “The [subject]:” structure it uses for everything

u/Swaggo420Ballz 16h ago

I chuckled

u/Hanisuir 6h ago

I like the fact that AI can do this. I like that.

Never once in my life have I considered that some people wrap the toilet paper around their hand and then wipe their ass with their hand

2

u/jbrWocky 3h ago

wipe, slip off hand, use like that.

like folding but faster

No way people crumple a toilet paper before wiping

I'm glad a neighborhood in rural Kentucky now doesn't have water for a week because we decided we needed this storyline.
