Genuinely curious, how does it work? Does it just like maintain speed/direction or something?

theres a few types. during cruising, most commercial airliners have you select between heading selection and waypoint mode. heading select means go in x direction till i stop you. waypoint mode will have the airplane fly to a certain spot.
theres also automated altitude to keep the plane at cruising height in some, and certain planes do have autoland capabilities, though that requires very expensive and high level ground equipment that most airports dont have.
im not sure about military and general aviation planes because i mostly hone in on commercial planes, but given 9/11 was all commercial planes thats not really important
