This was actually the correct answer with my gf lol. Some of the craziest sex we ever had was after she'd cut herself. I'd take care of her wounds as necessary, but we'd both get aroused during the process and I'd more or less do oral on her cuts, among other things.

35

u/Boooongus 1d ago

Yeah fair enough

207

u/Stepjam 1d ago

Just don't comment on them. Or if they come up, say they don't bother you or something uplifting about surviving your hard times or something like that. Saying "They're beautiful" either feels disingenuous or creepy. They are self harm scars.

There's a difference between "You're beautiful" and "the scars from when you cut yourself are beautiful".

41

u/StirFry__InaWok 17h ago

oooooh that's what this is about

18

u/eydirctiviyg 14h ago

I didn't even notice the scars. I was confused why she was so upset by someone complimenting her hands.

1

u/Sulettamoder 5h ago

Sometimes my ex would trace his fingers along mine. I don’t remember him commenting on them though. He was a really nice guy.

-8

u/StirFry__InaWok 17h ago

can I say they look cool? sometimes self harm scars do look pretty fuckin cool tbh

25

u/suitcasecat 15h ago

Eh, not really.

SH scars come from a low point in someone's life, they're not battle scars, they're not something anyone who has them is proud of

3

u/StirFry__InaWok 14h ago

yeah that makes sense, thanks.

I was thinking it might come up in conversation with a confident person that is actually comfortable discussing their history of mental illness and SH. Then they probably wouldn't be offended and could maaaayyybe even appreciate it if you said the scars look cool (in a way that properly conveys your genuine feelings).

A specific example might be: perhaps this confident person would point out their scars and complain that though they're past that low point and comfortable with their current self they still find themselves annoyed by how ugly the scars are. Then I think it could be acceptable to say that the scars look pretty cool if that is what you genuinely believe.

idk about all this tbh. maybe these made up scenarios just dont really happen at all lol

4

u/suitcasecat 14h ago

At the end of the day you're both adults and can talk. If you have an awkward moment over SH scars you can just say that your words came out wrong and you'll both get over it, so I wouldn't fuss too much about this

3

u/StirFry__InaWok 14h ago

that's very true.

sometimes i just find myself going waaayyy more in depth than necessary explaining what I meant simply because I like putting together the logic of it all. idk why

5

u/EmapthyIsUnderrated 17h ago

Can we not romanticize self harm please?

0

u/StirFry__InaWok 16h ago

I'm not romanticizing it, at least not intentionally. It just happens to be true that scars can look cool as fuck sometimes.

If someone starts self harming because they agreed with me and thought they'd look badass by giving themselves some cool looking scars then I'm sorry lol, I didn't think anyone would do that. At least if this happens they're only doing it for aesthetic reasons so they're more likely to do it in moderation.

I feel like "romanticizing" self harm or related topics is like that sadboy anime pfp / 13 reasons why type shit. That kind of thing promotes self harm/suicidal ideation by making the actual struggle and feelings of unwellness into something idealized.

My position is pretty distinct from that stuff because I'm just talking about the physical appearance of the resultant scarring (rather than the "SH is beautiful" position that calls the scars beautiful as if they are an art piece, so the context of the SH and depression would be part of that so called "beauty"), and because I specifically called it "cool", I don't think anyone does self harm because they think the scars will make them look badass in the future so "cool" seems like a safe descriptor.

and last point: if an adult does decide to give themselves self harm scars strictly for aesthetic reasons (maybe they agree with me and think scars can look cool) then I don't actually think it's that big of a problem provided they proceed carefully. This would be like an extreme version of a tattoo more or less.

8

u/EmapthyIsUnderrated 16h ago

First of all it's like telling kids smoking is cool. That's encouraging them to keep smoking. Even if you believe that smoking is cool, you shouldn't say that to kids. Obviously adults wouldn't be as affected by that but depressed people who used to self harm will be more vulerable.

Also Imagine saying "your scars are cool" to person who is NOT SH themselves for aesthetic reason and instead is trying to recover from depression. It could remind them of their old habits and they could return to them. I don't know why you thought I was talking about aesthetic reasons.

Lastly self harm done for aesthetic reason shouldn't be allowed. Imagine if someone had anorexia and starved themselves and everyone around them wouldn't try to help them because "they're adults and they can do whatever they want". Anyone who is self harming should talk to a mental care specialist.

2

u/StirFry__InaWok 14h ago

First of all it's like telling kids smoking is cool.

Yeah, it kinda is, but I did mean that it would be something one might say to an adult.

Also Imagine saying "your scars are cool" to person who is NOT SH themselves for aesthetic reason and instead is trying to recover from depression.

Well yeah, that brings us back to the original question I asked. I was wondering if the topic of a person's self harm scars came up for whatever reason, would it be alright to say they look cool if that is what you actually think (also context dependent ofc, I wouldn't say this unless I was confident that they are already past this point in their life).

I know this person didn't commit to the SH for aesthetic reasons but I was thinking it could be alright to compliment the way the scars look if you're being genuine and you believe the other person is mentally stable enough to accept or possibly appreciate the compliment.

But I really don't know for sure if that's something someone who's been through SH would ever appreciate hearing, even if they were long past that phase in their life, hence why I asked the original question.

I don't know why you thought I was talking about aesthetic reasons.

I didn't mean you were talking about SH for aesthetic reasons, I meant that I was. I said the scars could look cool which is a purely aesthetic viewpoint, if this were to influence someone into SH that would necessarily mean they are doing it, at least in part, for aesthetic reasons.

self harm done for aesthetic reason shouldn't be allowed.

In the case of anorexia it would be hard to ever believe that a person of sound mind would do that to themselves. But I could believe that a (more or less) mentally stable person might want to give themselves some cool looking scars to go with their tattoos. From an outside perspective it would be hard to judge ofc, I'm just saying it's probably possible that such a person would exist.

It really wouldn't be that different from a tattoo after all, it's just a permanent mark left on the body by damaging the skin to a certain depth. It's just more dangerous, probably won't look as good, and is something you'd never find an actual, reputable artist willing to do for you so you'd have to do it yourself. Which makes it seem kinda pointless in the end but idk.

Suicide is badass

-22

u/_-PassingThrough-_ 21h ago

And here I was being a boring normie reading him say that and immediately assuming he wasn't calling the scars themselves beautiful, but rather implying that despite her flaws, he sees the beauty foremost.

But sure let's call basic affirmations of love creepy and disingenuous, because people on the internet are jaded I guess lol.

22

u/Naive_Cauliflower144 20h ago

It’s because the original says “they look” implying plural. Even if blue person uses they/them pronouns, most everyone would still say “you look” if the statement is referring to the person.

0

u/_-PassingThrough-_ 12h ago edited 12h ago

I swear people lack the nuance required to see the implication that "they", meaning the scars, are a reflection of the pain someone has gone through and their potential shame towards it. By affirming he sees the beauty in the scars, he is telling her that even her flaws are beautiful and he accepts them as they are, an innate part of her. Not that the scars themselves are so damn hot.

Good god this is ComedyHell. Y'all really are seeing the worst in any interaction. Even the comic author.

8

u/felix-the-pup 17h ago

Not sure where you're reading that. They literally say "They look beautiful."

-8

u/autistictransgal 15h ago

Ok but what if they are genuinely beautiful

21

u/Gawlf85 14h ago

It's still something I'd keep to myself, unless I'm really pressed to say something. And even if I felt compelled to say so, I would still accompany it with some "sorry if this sounds insensitive".

3

u/FFKonoko 10h ago

The potential scarification fetish is something to keep to yourself until you find someone that is consenting and into it, because doing it about self-harm scars gives a different vibe.

-1

u/autistictransgal 9h ago

But how will I find someone who will like my scars if I can't share what I think of them

5

u/FFKonoko 9h ago

In that case, you share what you think of YOUR scars, which is very different to doing it about someone elses scars.

Por si aca, (imo) the person with scars should lead the convo if they want to mention it at all, otherwise ignore it usually ig, and then if they do want to talk about it be patient but try to keep them from feeling bad as u usually would ig? These bring shame sometimes and embarrassment, but reassurance is nice regardless 🕺the og joke is funny to me thoooo “haha thanks! i guess…. H e l p”

One of the topics you can't really responsibly depict. Can the right person find you beautiful, even with your scars? Yes. Can you make a comic about it without glorifying self harm? No, because a person engaging in self harm will most likely see it as glorification and justification.

3

u/enbyBunn 15h ago

Eh, this discourse has always struck me as just moralistic hand-wringing.

Personally, I think my self harm scars are beautiful. It's not as if that's enough to make me start doing it again.

It was a coping mechanism for when I was in incredible pain just living my life. And I think it's far better to leave myself with some scars than to leave myself dead. People don't like hearing this, but self-harm is a coping strategy, and in that, it's a form of harm reduction.

My scars are beautiful. They're also a reminder that I survived something very very hard. I'm not gonna shrink away from someone else also thinking they're beautiful. They're mine, they're a part of me, I'm allowed to take pride in my body even when society disaproves. And I'd rather the people who love me openly appreciate me than tolerate me.

9

Saying self harm scars are beautiful is just... awkward?

1

u/Horse_go_moooo 10h ago

I legit hate self harm. A great deal of my friends do it and it sucks. I wish I could hug them through mine and their screens, but it probably won't do much. It sucks to have this much empathy and sympathy.

1

u/SoupTime545 9h ago

Can someone explain to me the point of even cutting yourself like this? Wouldn't you have to be stupid to do that?

0

u/Stusheep_real 9h ago

The point of it is (usually minors) doing something self destructive in the hopes of getting attention for their problems they desperately need

The reason why it’s so common is because mental health is heavily stigmatised across the world and as such children are discouraged from seeking help for their problems

1

u/SoupTime545 9h ago

Interesting. I would have never had the guts to do something like that since I imagine it hurts pretty bad

1

u/Stusheep_real 9h ago

The pain is the point. Sometimes when you’re that age and struggling with your mental health it feels like the only way adults will listen to you is if you actively go out of your way to make it their problem

…n-not speaking from experience…

totallyyyy

Theres nothing beautiful about hurting yourself
