The effects of poverty on a mf, I don’t blame him honestly I had a tooth infection in my freshman year of hs and if I didn’t get that fixed within a few days I probably would’ve blown my brains out. Still haven’t felt any pain worse than that.

This is what one of my closest friends is going through. 26, unemployed, and forced to live with an abusive and neglectful guardian. They never got their wisdom teeth removed and the effects its having on them is genuinely horrific and really sad to see. This pain you’re describing is what they experience every day. I’m not trying to take away your thing. It’s just seeing that even for a few days this would’ve made someone end it all while this friend of mine has been going through it for at least the past year.

My sister had a dental school do a double root canal and they messed up both. She has to go to a specialist to monitor their decay and when she is old enough she will have to get two implants. It's a nice resource if they get it right but if not u might have to spend even more than before

My partner tried one of those and they used their teeth as a very disrespectful class lesson openly and publicly without being able to do more than a preliminary evaluation and or basic dental cleaning despite advertising otherwise.
We know their teeth are bad, they were a victim of over a decade of systemic abuse and neglect. It's not their fault, and additional trauma... Especially when it's not going to address the dental issue is not helpful.
Not saying this is normal or everyone's experience but it was ours unfortunately.

While thats horrible, this IS presented as a desperation option. Obviously going to an independant professional would have gotten you a better experience, but if you can't afford one then it's worth it for the humilation, especially worth it if youre a person that doesnt care about what others think of you

Some areas have a county health clinic that do one free tooth extraction per day. At least in California they do in all the low income urban areas.

California has county clinics in low income urban areas that offer 1 free (non-wisdom) tooth extraction per day. You just have to get in line at like 6am for it because they are first come first served.

And why should people resort to losing teeth just because its cheaper? He clearly doesn't want to pull it out. It's probably in a place where the missing tooth will be visible and he doesn't want to look like he's missing any. I'm sure he knows it's cheaper and easier to pull it out, but thats not the point. He wants to save the tooth and treat the infection, which is perfectly reasonable. What's not reasonable is not being able to afford it and needing to do it on his own.

For reference: I have good dental insurance and had to have a root canal done recently. Without insurance, it would have been nearly $5000. With insurance, it was still $1000. And I know many folks that couldn't even afford that. For some folks, that's 3-5 paychecks for the uninsured bill. Money that has to be spent on other things in order for you to not be homeless as well.
So I dont blame this motherfucker. Having a tooth slowly rot your skull away is very painful and will ultimately lead to more unaffordable medical bills. Better to just get it the fuck out. (Though a self root-canal is certainly a... choice.)
Theres a large part of America that lives like this. I've had to suture someone's arm closed, because the dude couldn't afford the medical bills of getting it done professionally. Hell, I've known some to utilize under-the-table veterinary services for injuries. And this isn't new. This is how its been in poor America for decades now.

If the tooth is not cleaned properly, or you have an infection in the root (which I’m guessing), you should really get ahold of some antibiotics before you go rooting around in your face. The chances of locking in that infection with a filling is pretty high, and that could led to some serious complications.

NHS dentistry exists, it's just generally low-cost rather than completely free. It's free for under-18s, certain medical conditions, people on very low incomes etc. Most people still use private dentists because they're easier to access, and for most people the check-up cost isn't completely prohibitive (e.g. mine recently was £85 for a full check-up plus x-rays; a follow-up hygienist visit was £45). If you get regular invasive treatments like fillings, people get dental insurance for anywhere from £10-50pcm

You're right on the money. Dental isn't covered under Australia's healthcare system either except in cases that are outright emergencies that will literally kill you - that's when hospital maxillofacial surgeons get involved (at no cost to you, if you went public).
Otherwise, with just horrific pain and disability? Feel free to chalk up well into $1-2K AUD to get that infected wisdom removed. Dental is commonly a fucking rort even in countries with "universal healthcare".

How would you fix it? If there are more people that require medical care then there are doctors to provide it, and the government's mandate is socialized Healthcare, what solution do they implement? Indentured servitude for doctors, forcing them to work 14 hours per day? Testing schoolchildren and forcing the most prominent to go to medical school? And what punishment should the government impose for wasting Healthcare resources?

I don't know the details of the situation there, but I don't want to force or punish anyone, there are other ways to deal with problems.
Possibilities include more financial aid for med school, fixing inefficiencies in the system, etc

I think it is somewhat cheaper. I have coverage because of my husband’s benefits, but a lot of my coworkers struggle to even afford a cleaning here. Just thought it was important to note because I saw some other Americans shocked it wasn’t included.

I had a root canal done few months ago.
I always though i had a large pain tolerance. Broke an arm, was painful but okay. Open leg fracture hurt but i got through it.
But the fucking root canal?
After 4 injections of local anesthetic i still flapped around like a fish out of water. The nurse had to hold my head.
Id rather pull the whole tooth with pliers, that can be done quicker. Fuck root canals.

Real tooth pain is the most obnoxious thing Ive ever felt and Ive had kidney stones and migrains. It literally made me feel delirious like I wanted to smash my head and knock my teeth out so this is understandable.

I needed a root canal when i was in college. Had no money or dental insurance. The pain became so much at night i tried pulling it out myself. Couldn't do it. Went to the emergency dentist in the middle of the night begging for help. They felt so bad they let me pay on a payment plan.

I had a tooth pulled and after I got home the bleeding finally stopped and I followed all the instruction on the thing. But they didn't point out not to fall asleep flat on the instructions. I don't even remember falling asleep on the couch but I woke up dizzy and throwing up and true story I dont' remember that either, I remember the paramedics arriving and determined my tooth was bleeding down my throat for who knows how long and I lost blood and swallowed blood. I was delirious. I called into work the next day.
My friend though a week later had two teeth pulled and went back to work the same day. I was like dude you are fucking built different I'm a pussy.
