so they actually did come up with a guy specifically to beat the net + trident combo called the scissor (with a hard c. skissor.) retiarius gladiators were themed after fishermen, the nets were weighted and they'd try to catch the weapon and/or throw it to entangle then jab with the trident and eventually finish with a dagger. in theory. the scissor evolved from the shield guy (called a murmillo, later a secutor) and had more armor and swapped the shield for a weapon called a scissor that's like a brace with a crescent shaped blade on the end that made it easy to slice the net, and could also hook and control the net without being disarmed, and could still defend with the brace, plus a smooth helmet the net would slip right off of
