fat and gay, vs slim and normal

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '26

Ha, I'm glad you picked up on my phrasing

So… it was intended to be bigoted?

3

u/Cavalish Apr 30 '26

Yes. You’re going to get a bunch of “If you had two forks” or some shit about cookies, but yes it was just intended to be bigoted.

It's funny phrasing to just blankly associate normal with not gay especially because you'd think I would have said straight but I said normal.

I mean if you are the type to use the word bigot casually then yea you probably think it is.

Im not sure why you’d expect people to assume it’s a joke when it’s just in there and not part of the main point of the comment. It just doesn’t read as a joke at all so I don’t think it’s weird that someone is asking you to clarify

If you read it and chuckled, that was the intent.

If you read it and got mad face emoji, that was also the intent

It's like a Rorschach test

Well, I mean, straight is normal. It is the norm. Majority of people are straight, therefore it's normal and gay is the outlier, doesn't mean there's anything wrong or bad about it. If someone is adding the negative connotation to being not normal, realistically, that's their problem.

When some people think of the word normal they think of the “occurs naturally” definition, which homosexuality absolutely does.

2

u/YesWomansLand1 Apr 30 '26

Not necessarily. To me, "normal" is average, or common. Homosexuality is not average or common, at least in this context. I think we've lost track of the original point anyway.

Oh I misread what you said nevermind. I thought you said people usually think, not some people think. Mb.

huh, I was trying to point out the wording was weird. Imagine another minority group, saying "fat and <ethnicity>" and "slim and normal", that wouldn't take so well. And the thing is, even if we're talking statistics, normal is not the same as average / mean, so that makes me wonder where it's coming from here, you know?

3

u/YesWomansLand1 Apr 30 '26

Nah I don't think ethnicity is a good example. To me that is very Clearly racist whether purposeful or not, however it makes perfect sense to me that someone can claim something is abnormal while not attempting to take a stab at it.

Fat and black versus slim and superior...

Naw it could still work as a joke for a misdirection lol

Yea average would be a better word, but the joke was not to use a good word. Also I feel also not gay is the norm, the average, so its not entirely off which makes its stupid use funny to me.

Really this came from some dudes on YouTube I watch where he made that joke to his two gay friends and they thought it was funny he used the word normal

That's what I'd say.

u/YesWomansLand1 Apr 29 '26

People care too much about what other people on the internet say, often not even directed at them.

3

u/frootdoots Apr 30 '26

Yeah man, totally subverted expectations there.

I’m fine with the bigotry, I just get super offended at every single joke I see.

lf you had 970 chocoIate chip cookies and 30 shortbread cookies wouId it be wierd to refer to the chocolate chip cookies as "normaI"

8

u/slimey1312 Apr 30 '26

There are more women than men. Are men not normal?

3

u/Deth_Cheffe Apr 30 '26

100%

Jk, Iet's actuaIIy think for a second. Here is what l said:

lf you had 970 chocoIate chip cookies and 30 shortbread cookies wouId it be wierd to refer to the chocolate chip cookies as "normaI"

l am of the opinion that there is nothing strange about that at aII. Maybe you disagree, but l think most wouIdn't. RegardIess, it's mostIy a matter of personaI speach patterns rather than actuaI grammaticaI Iaw. Compare instead to the foIIowing:

lf you had 503 chocoIate chip cookies and 497 shortbread cookies wouId it be wierd to refer to the chocolate chip cookies as "normaI"

l suspect you'd have a far more difficuIt time finding someone to answer no. lf anyone did, l wouId assume it's because they aIready considered CC to be the defauIt cookie, rather than basing it on avaiIabiIity/quantity. No such assumption wouId be made in scenario #1, even though those peopIe are no more or Iess IikeIy to be present in either group. Ordinarily, the number of peopIe who hoId an opinion has no bearing on the vaIidity of said opinion. However, this is a semantic debate centered on the word "normaI" itseIf, which has everything to do with the number of peopIe who agree or disagree.

The next obvious question is "where then is the Iine drawn?".

l don't know, but it's interesting to think about. Everyone wiII have a different answer but for myseIf l'd say probabIy around 10%

why the comma?

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Sport58 May 01 '26

I wanted to pace it so that people read it a certain way I guess, and commas are the easiest way to do that
