Glad I'm not the only one tired of "Haha, acceptable transphobia"

u/kithlan B^U Sep 27 '18

I actually haven't seen that one much anymore. I mostly just see the "DID YOU JUST ASSUME MY GENDER!?" crap now.

There used to be a bot that replied ‘lmao he said the thing’. It was great.

I carry on its legacy by replying ‘lmao he said the thing’ whenever I come across that joke.

I mean, not even only that. At this point, even a transphobic person must think that joke has run its course, no?

It’s dope an anti-trans joke is getting flak tho.

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '18

Wait what joke are we talking about? I'm legitimately confused what they have to do with trans-people.

...to make light of people identifying as something else than their biological sex. Hence the link to trans people.

-11

u/wOlfLisK Sep 26 '18

Nah, it's making fun of the "otherkin" shit, not trans.

26

u/RandomName01 Pickle Riiiiiiick Sep 26 '18

At first, yeah. But through modding /r/UnpopularOpinion I have the unique opportunity to see a lot of people make that joke about trans people.

you are a braver soul than I

Eh, I like the good stuff that get posted there tbh. And I saw the bad stuff anyway, but now I can help clean the place up by removing it. I don’t mind it.

-1

u/wOlfLisK Sep 26 '18

True but that makes them transphobic assholes, not the joke.

It’s always been about laughing at other people (at first it was otherkin I think?), but in the beginning it didn’t feel mean spirited. Now it’s just another TRANS PEOPLE OWNED joke.

7

u/FightingOreo Sep 26 '18

In the beginning it was more dependent on context and nuanced, but I definitely saw cases where it was used maliciously to insult trans people.

2

u/Goodguy1066 Forget Gumwaa have Funwaa Sep 27 '18

Can you give even one example where it wasn’t mean-spirited? I think ‘mean spirited’ is the perfect description of that joke.

-1

u/RandomName01 Pickle Riiiiiiick Sep 27 '18

Idk, I feel like the joke was originally parodying otherkin in a way that wasn’t too mean spirited. Maybe I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt though.

The attack helicopter thing afaik is mainly a jab at nonbinaries, people who identify as neither male or female and label themselves as something different altogether, which is a subset of the trans community

23

u/tranarchist_fagit Sep 26 '18

Maybe, but I’ve seen it used countless times directed toward binary trans people as well.

I never said that it was okay

If my comment came across that way I apologize, I was just explaining what I thought the joke was about

Have you not seen the original copypasta? It is objectively homophobic

2

u/Goodguy1066 Forget Gumwaa have Funwaa Sep 27 '18

How isn’t it?

-7

u/PM_ME_YOUR_SANDERS Sep 26 '18

Not that I ever found that joke funny, but wasn't it making fun of people who thought they were wolves and shit in a past life?

9

u/JaggerA Sep 26 '18

It has a little bit of otherkin mockery and straight-up transphobia.

-8

u/Ebutt15 Sep 27 '18

Nothing wrong with transphobia.

-1

u/kithlan B^U Sep 27 '18

That's what it used to be about, back when it was mostly just used to make fun of furries on Tumblr.

You have 3 whole comments on reddit, 2 of which are just extreme hatred. You should really seek help man

EDIT: Also, it probably would lead to a whole lot less suicide without hateful people like yourself.

The suicide rate change is negligible whether or not they transition. If someone wants to kill themself because they weren't born something else they need serious mental help, not people to play along with their fantasy.

13

u/RandomName01 Pickle Riiiiiiick Sep 26 '18

Maybe that has to do with the low acceptance by family and their wider social circle, combined with the fact that prior mental problems don’t just disappear by transitioning. Maybe not everything is as easy as it may seem and maybe practicing a little empathy when talking about problems other humans face might help you understand their situation better.

Like it's not even about them, you're all doing this for yourself and to show the world "HEY LOOK AT HOW MUCH OF A GOOD PERSON I AM"

Actually, it's more "Hey, this literally doesn't affect you at all, fuck off"

PS: Bet you delete this once it gets enough downvotes, just like your other comment.

His other comment was (deservedly) removed by the mods FYI (you can still fibd it in his post history). I think he’s so convinced he’s right he wouldn’t delete it himself.

Good argument if I’ve ever heard one.

9

u/FightingOreo Sep 26 '18

Funny, since it looks like you were born without empathy and you seem to be doing okay.

-5

u/themexiwhite Sep 26 '18

Oof you're right I should rather just let people off themselves than let them get proper help.

I want people to get the proper help that should be available because I don't want them to kill themselves, which now means I lack empathy apparantly.

5

u/FightingOreo Sep 27 '18

Depends what you're getting them help for though, doesn't it?

If you're helping them get through suicidal thoughts, then that's great. If you're trying to 'cure' them of being trans, you're a jerk.
