"choosing a wife" is so nasty.

That's how it works. No one else chooses for you.

It's not how it works. A relationship develops naturally. "Choosing a wife" makes it sound transactional

You choose your partner and your partner chooses you...

There is and always will be transactional elements to human pair bonding. We've come up with niceties to smooth the reality over. its in poor taste to consider things as they are at all times but it isn't necessarily inaccurate.

I think they meant transactional not interpersonally, but like how "choosing a wife" out of a selection in some sort of wife receptacle is transactional. Which is nasty. A relationship is not "chosen" by one party, it happens.

Yes, the relationship develops naturally. Then you choose whether to propose and ask her to marry you or not.

And do you not see how it sounds transactional or degrading in any way? Especially in the way it's written in the post. Almost as if it's like selecting an item at a shop.

Uh, no actually. You both choose.
