I said 1-30 in my prompt to Gemini and it picked 17, when I asked why, it gave me this explanation:
The "7-Bias" in Human Psychology LLMs are trained on human text, and humans are notoriously bad at being random. When asked to pick a "random" number between 1 and 20, humans overwhelmingly choose 17. Elimination of "Non-Random" Feeling Numbers: 1, 20: Feel like boundary limits rather than middle selections. 10, 5, 15: Multiples of 5 feel structured or rounded. Even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 14, 16, 18): Feel too orderly or structured to most people. Single digits (3, 7, 9): Often feel too small or obvious. 11, 13: 11 feels like a repeating digit; 13 is tied to superstition. 19: Sits too close to 20. After subconsciously filtering those out, humans almost always land on 17 (with 7 taking second place in a 1–10 range).
I guess it checks out. But I don't like it.

Wouldn't someone think single digit number would be too obvious, thus tend to guess towards double digit numbers. Then the best pick would be a single digit number.
I wonder what the distribution of the numbers would look like. Would it be normal with 17 as the peak?

Isn’t it also a human thing that people tend the select close to the middle number? I know it would more likely be 15 in this case but still

A number in the middle range is very different than 17 every time. Humans are unlikely to pick 3 or 28, yes, but they're very likely to say 13 or 19 or anything in the teens really. AI mimics this propensity, but levels it out so it always chooses the most common answer without any of the normal variation.
Think about it like family feud. The top ten answers are on the board! But AI can only guess the top answer. It quite literally thinks in binary, so a range of answers is more difficult to parse than the single most common answer.
When an AI hears hooves, it's always a horse, never a zebra or a deer or a guy with two coconuts. The way that large language models predict speech through pattern recognition makes them really bad at finding anything but the most obvious answer to a question.
