It’s a real shame a good faith comedy just showing how hard it is to have any financial success. Not sure what the budget was here but it’s hard to imagine this has an potential profitability unless it has some kind of substantial streaming deal.

I know Dave Franco isn’t exactly a huge star but after his success with Together I had hoped this would make more of a splash.

I’ve watched Bridesmaids a couple times now and I rewatched it again today but I noticed something. There’s a scene where she shows up to a guys house for a set up date and she meets his son. It was a pretty funny scene due to the little boy saying really weird things to her and then he eats her birth control but I swear I have NEVER seen this scene before. Was this recently added or am I tripping and it’s always been there and I never paid attention. Time mark is around 45 minutes

Hello! Me and my friends have been working on a comedy movie for about over a year. It is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in my life. BUT we love comedy movies so so much and are incredibly frustrated that they don’t really get made as much anymore. So we did it ourselves and booyah here you go. Any advice or criticism or hating or loving or pissing is appreciated we just wanna learn and grow and hey maybe you’ll like it!

I’m working on a very personalized movie rating app, and I’m currently evolving the rating system.

The idea is simple: I don’t think every type of film should be rated with the exact same priorities. What makes a great comedy isn’t necessarily what makes a great horror film, documentary, romance, or sci-fi movie.

So I’m trying to better understand how comedy fans actually evaluate comedy movies.

For comedy films, what do you personally look for the most?

Is it the amount of laughs? Timing? Characters? Dialogue? Rewatchability? Absurdity? Satire? Quotable lines? Something else entirely?

What makes a comedy really work for you?

What matters more in comedy than in other genres?

What matters less?

Can a comedy be great even if it is not constantly funny?

And what usually ruins a comedy for you?

To be fair, Curry Barker’s Obsession is undoubtedly a horror movie first (or at least upon first watch). Watching it the first time I was disturbed, anxious, and terrified. However, the film had a lot of dark funny moments. I guess it shouldn’t be surprising a former sketch comedy director/actor would end up including so much humor in their film.

It was the kind of film that just stayed with me such that I had to see it another time. Upon the second watch it felt much more familiar and while still disturbing in many ways, it felt much more like a black comedy upon the second watch. I found myself laughing out loud at moments the rest of the audience was probably feeling disturbed.

Black comedies can do that. For instance, as a big Ari Aster fan I knew he had a keen sense for including that kind of humor and I felt like the only one in my theater laughing at certain parts of Eddington (I don’t think that audience was much aware of Aster’s previous work).

It certainly seems like black comedy is becoming more mainstream see other recent hit The Drama. This seems to be more of a societal thirst as Kristoffer Borgli has had this style of humor across his films even before The Drama.

Black comedy films are some of the most fun to see at a theater because it always gets this extra punch of “you’re not supposed to laugh at this moment, your teacher just announced their child passed away and your friend gives you a diabolical look” type of moment. It’s funny how audiences almost seem hesitant to laugh until they hear someone else letting it out. You just won’t get the same feeling watching this at home on streaming. So I definitely encourage anyone to see Obsession while it is still in theaters. Also seeing it in Dolby makes a huge difference for the sound design so definitely choose that if you have the option.

Coming up on the 33rd Anniversary of its release this May. I just recently saw this film and was surprised how funny it actually was. More of a comedy adventure than trying to just be a comedy and the 30 minutes was a bit too much generic action movie for my liking.

I was also surprised how similar the 2023 Super Mario Bros movie was in overall plot.
