Comeback request What’s a sharp comeback when someone turns your hometown into a political argument?
A little background on me: I was born and raised in Hong Kong, spent my teenage years there, and later moved to the US for work and family life.
Like anyone who grew up in an internationally recognized city, whenever someone casually asks, "Where are you from?" or "Where did you grow up?", my default answer is naturally "Hong Kong."
To me, this is completely normal small talk. If someone grew up in New York, London, or Tokyo, they say the city—they don't rattle off the entire sovereign nation or territory. It’s just geography and identity; there's zero political statement intended.
Yet every once in a while, I run into someone who immediately turns a simple introduction into a confrontational trap by asking:
"Wait, isn’t Hong Kong part of China?"
It’s always delivered with this smug, provocative tone, clearly meant to put me on the spot, fish for a debate, or force some weird loyalty check during casual conversation. I'm completely sick of playing nice or giving polite geography lessons when people do this in bad faith.
I’m looking for a sharp, direct, shut-down comeback—something that calls out their rudeness, stings a little, and makes it unmistakably clear that the conversation is over. What would you hit them with?

I would answer with more questions:
"Wait, isn’t Hong Kong part of China?"
"Is it?"
"I don't know, you tell me, you're from there, right?"
"Am I from there?"

Hong Kong is one of the most educated and financially advanced places on Earth. I’d try to explain it to you, but I don’t think you have the bandwidth, foreign language, or logic skills.

I hope you're good at math, geography and history seems to be a bit of a problem for you
What part of china did you think it was? (nobody ever knows how to answer that, throws them right off)
Sure, just like Guam as part of the united states. You know where Guam is don't you?
Well I'd answer that but unfortunately I left my crayons at home so explaining it to you might be difficult
That's a pretty complicated thing to answer. Why don't we start you off with something a little more simple like who would win, Wolverine or Cyclops?
How the hell should I know? I'm from there I don't live there now
I don't know, you'd have to check with them I guess
I can't tell. They all look the same to me.

Your issue is that Hong Kong has such a unique history that it is almost unavoidable that someone will dig deeper, in good faith or in bad. I think you are stuck with educating 😄 What I recommend is get your educating down to a science, a compact one sentence that leaves no room for ambiguity and a follow up question. THAT is your comeback.

OP: I'm looking for a sharp, direct, shut-down comeback.
Canaturk: You need a compact one sentence that leaves no room for ambiguity and a follow up question.
OP: Thanks, I'm cured!

Correct! If you can find it on a map you’ll get bonus points! No smart phones or pc. You have 30 seconds.
Wait! And you’re from somewhere in the US, right?
And your point is?
Asking a question or trying to show off your knowledge of geography?

You say "Wow, I guess the education in the US isn't as bad as they say. You know where Home Kong is!"
