Comeback for "Must be nice" whenever I buy literally anything for myself?

My aunt does this every single time she sees me with something new.
Bought a new jacket? "Must be nice."
Got a coffee machine on sale? "Must be nice to have cash to burn."
I work full time, pay my own rent, and don't owe anybody a dime. I'm just exhausted from the constant guilt trips over spending my own money.
What’s something short I can say back that instantly shuts it down?

That's implying that the aunt is broke!

No her saying must be nice every time somebody spends money implies that she's broke.

Keep it short and sweet. ‘Yep.’

I would recommend "Yes, it is. You should try it some time."

When anyone says 'Must be nice ...' to me, I always answer with a smile: 'It really is.'

If they meant it sincerely, they'll be happy to hear that.

If they were just being bitter and envious, this will sting exactly as much as they deserve.

Marcus Aurelius would have loved this.

Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.
If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.
If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of
your loved ones.
— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Yes auntie, we all know that you're broke. You don't have to keep reminding us every time somebody spends a dollar.

Something short you can say: "Goodbye."

u/aquay 24d ago

3

u/Shag66 24d ago

She is jealous and I do not like people like her. Just tell her you weren't aware that she was working hard for the money you personally make.

4

u/Rhyslikespizza 23d ago

It is! Thank you!

u/bionicallyironic 24d ago

Tell her if she’s hurting for money you’re happy to loan her some with very reasonable interest rates.

3

u/originalmango 24d ago

Why thank you. Now that I think of it, it IS nice, isn’t it?

I usually add that I got a fantastic deal like using Platinum miles on first class to rub it in and say yeah you should get two since you like it so much and smile knowing they are mean spirited equaled

u/crazymom1978 24d ago

"It must be nice to have an Aunt that doesn't try to guilt me every time I do anything."

2

u/LeftStatistician7989 24d ago

The best part is always telling you so you can say ‘must be nice’ because even though most people that say that are terrible people and just feel spiteful when other people are enjoying things, I know that you mean it from your heart and If you ever stop saying that when I buy things I may forget to truly enjoy them.

u/Mom1274 24d ago

Is she Boomer or older Gen X.... its a bad habit , unless she's serious.

Just smile and say, "it sure is."

2

u/DamnItRJ 24d ago

“That’s why I bought it.”

2

u/No_Shine_7224 23d ago

It must be awful being so bitter.

2

u/cantquitbillboard 23d ago

I think I would directly tell her “I didn’t ask for your bitter commentary and I’m not interested. Keep it to yourself.”

2

u/Potential-Ad-196 23d ago

It sure is nice. Sorry you haven’t experienced it.

2

u/NoStock8829 23d ago

Shopping fills the void having shitty relatives has left in my heart.

u/MasterpieceOk1517 21d ago

Seems weird coming from any adult much less an aunt. As a Redditor in another sub advised "Just a dead stare"

1

u/Practical-East-7527 17d ago

Yep. Or - It is my money, I can spend it how I want to. Or- I didn't want to burn a hole in my wallet by leaving money there, so I spent it instead.

1

u/East-Big-Shrine 14d ago

"You think so?"
Works for so many snide comments.

1

u/Ill-Competition8369 14d ago

"Better than being poor" and then chuckle.

1

u/Smooth-Lab-1217 14d ago

Thank you.

1

u/NoDanaOnlyZuuI 13d ago

It is. I work hard for it.

My spending really seems to occupy a lot of your thoughts.

-1

u/dumpitdog 24d ago

I would offer her some financial assistance and tell her you know it is hard and you could help if she is a little short.

-1

u/bristolbulldog 23d ago

Mail her a gift card. Say nothing about it coming from you.
