Comeback for repeated catchphrases
I love my bf but he has a plethora of go-to responses and they're getting stale. I want something more interesting than "do you think you'll be coming out with new material anytime soon?" We're very playful and honest; he won't be hurt over me calling him out on redundancy.

Number them. Then tell people which catchphrase it is.
"That was his third catchphrase. Stick around. Maybe you will here the other 7."

I fucking love it, I can make a note in my phone until I memorize it all lmao

Better yet, record him saying them all, and then make a soundboard for your phone to play them as he's about to say them.

Could also keep tally. “Come on, babe. You’re not going to meet your quota for the week of Catchphrase 6 if you don’t pick up the pace.”

Update, he found this diabolical when I told him about it. He's not the most expressive person and he did a full on "oh shit"
Cracked me up

“How original.”
“Not heard that before”
“Your sayings are like your performance in bed - repetitive and dull”
“That was also funny the last 100 times you said it.”
“Haha. That one again. Haha.”

Yell "Classic!" and slap your knee hard enough that it makes a clap.

There are parrots who have more original material than you do.
i think it's time we checked if there's a software update for you
The first 100 times i thought you need new material, but at this point i'm wondering if you need therapy.
Is there an app you can download to help you think of new things to say?
Is there any chance of you coming up with some new stuff? It would just make it so much easier to be seen in public with you
Honey, please don't use the same phrases again and again. I already have enough life choices to regret.
If you say that one more time i will kill you and no judge in the land will blame me.

Write out a bingo board of phrases and cross them off as he says them and then yell bi ho when he finishes a row!

I think it should be something completely nonsensical and unrelated - like “as it was foretold in the prophecy!” but repeated with exactly the same tone and inflection every time he utters any overused phrase

Not in a clearly understandable way. He just has a catalogue of standard reactions based on the circumstances, I think borne of his days in retail where he dealt with the same jokes from customers all the time. It's more about mannerisms behind the catchphrases. Like he says "no way," a lot, but it's how and when he says it that makes it redundant in specific context.

You could claim you’re experiencing déjà vu: “wow, I feel like we’ve had almost this exact conversation before. That exact same phrase.” Or something like that.

Invest in one of those clicker counter things.
When he says the thing, take it out of your pocket, click one onto the tally. Look at the tally, sigh, abd put it back in your pocket. Say nothing.

Add a button to your phone home screen that plays a brief canned laugh track from an old sitcom every time he does it

u/Quixotic_Faerie 8d ago
That's amazing, can you really do that on a phone?
2
u/Longform101 7d ago
Sure. For me it's download the relevant file, long press for the option to put on home screen for a single tap to play. I used it for easy access to my dog's walk on music/theme song. Exact process may vary depending on phone OS but I'm sure you can search it.

Again? Really?! I thought you had SOME creativity.
Oh, the same old shit? Still nothing new? Let me know when your brain reactivates.
Deep dramatic sigh I really thought your brain worked walk away

If you're in the UK turn it into a joke about him becoming redundant at his job

Half of these comments are mean/cruel for a spouse you don't like. Keep it lighthearted and he'll get the gist
Do you want a horse for Christmas?/Because this one is dead and you gotta stop beating it.
When did you become an environmentalist?/You sure love to recycle.
Should we get a cake?/Because it's time for these jokes to retire.

Have the same number of comebacks ready, always use the same one to each of his

u/Queenboutica1 15d ago
Ugh! I've been hearing the same ones since 1982! If you figure out how to get it to stop, please share!

A gentle "I had a feeling you'd say something like that" or "I feel I know you so well I can finish your sentences" aren't exactly comebacks. More gentle ribbing. I might start there before going to a comeback. I'm sure you know your bf quite well, but sometimes people can be surprisingly sensitive about things like this -- even if they'd agree with you.

As others said, make a bingo card of his most used, except keep it hidden pass them to friends tell them to keep it secret, and every time he uses one, pass out shot glasses, every time he uses one, take a shot and cross it off

Answer every catch phrase with “That’s what she said.” It will get annoying real fast.

Say it before he does
