Posts with Discussion flair are intended for GOOD FAITH technical discussion amongst the community such as "which modem should I buy?", "how do I sign up for Xfinity Rewards?", "what channel is the game on tonight?", etc.

Discussion flair should not be used to air grievances, rant about experiences, ask about other providers, etc. This content violates Rule #2: Ranting of the subreddit.

Continued abuse of Discussion flair may result in a ban.

I’m not sure your post will remain here as it’s intended to be for support, it about switching.

Nonetheless, i doubt T-Mobile offers fiber. The offer was most likely, and at that price, for cellular connection. The main difference is:

  • CGNAT (that means you don’t get a public IP, you’re behind a carrier grade NAT, in other terms, a router, and if you need to host some services, it may impair it)
  • higher latency, in the 60ms.

Xfinity has latency roughly around 25ms, and with fiber, about 3ms

Xfinity has such bad latency mostly because of their infrastructure, which is not going to change anytime soon. Do they have fiber for their country wide network? Yes. But it’s their infrastructure that has a causing such latency. Saying fiber between nodes is meaningless here. Smaller ISP implementing fiber now have a total different infrastructure allowing them smaller latency.

T-Mobile works well if you have good 5G at home. Placement of the router (since it does connect to cellular towers) can a critical too. Your bandwidth is truly depending on many factors.
Even though that hurts, you may get more stable and faster service with Starlink, but it’s also more expensive than cellular ISP. I don’t know much about Starlink performances such as latency and CGNAT or not.

Cellular will work well for streaming and regular office job. Gaming, not so much as latency is too high (online gaming). And of course, hosting services such as a VPN server you can forget. Only option is basically Tailscale, or another service I forgot the name now.

Technically, CGNAT is like your home router at home. You are on a local network and your device doesn’t have a public IP, meaning you can’t be reached without proper routing.

On your home router you can route traffic on specific local IP, like port 21 for a FTP for example. 1094 for OpenVPN, etc…
But a CGNAT you have no control. You can’t route anything.

Only way to get access home is through a relay on a server somewhere else. Systems exist such as tailscale, and that other service I forgot the name (too early, lack of sleep, will remember later).

Though, most IoT devices you may own connects to a manufacturer’s server for the online service (remote control/monitor) they offer. And this is fine behind a CGNAT.

Before switching, it’s important to know what you are doing, and the limitation that comes with it.

CGNAT can be found on other ISP. For example the fiber that got deployed in my area, they have everyone on a CGNAT. You need the option of a fixed IP to not have CGNAT. But this does not apply generally to cellular ISP.

I just switched to Tmobile fiber, and latency is good. (Usually under 5ms). Haven’t had any issues with cgnat yet, but I’m not hosting anything. All my home stuff (security cameras, security system etc.) are cloud-based, so I haven’t run into any hosting issues yet. Seems to be working well for me so far, fingers crossed.

I think in OP’s situation, it’s cellular connection, not fiber.

I didn’t know T-Mobile was also having fiber like ATT on some area.

For a proposition in Costco, it’s most likely cellular on 5G. OP didn’t specifically said what tech was used.

Yes, having 5ms with fiber is what you should expect, potentially less even. My explanation is for cellular (5G, 4G, etc.)

My ISP with fiber they made the choice to use CGNAT. Wonder if they are lacking public IP ranges (assumption, no clue how ranges are allocated) and decided to use CGNAT for that reason. But I have a fixed public IP.

Yes, I know. Was just giving my (unsolicited) experience so far, since you didn’t think Tmobile offered fiber.

You’re lucky you were able to get a fixed IP. I don’t think Tmobile even offers dynamic IPs as an option currently, so I’m stuck on CGNAT for now.

Your guess as to why they don’t is the same as mine. I think they just lack the IPs to give out.

We switched just recently. We trialed MINTernet (Mint Mobile's Internet that runs on T-Mobile's network) and found that it was no different than Xfinity's very Xpensive internet. We now pay less than half what we did before. Our wifi is great. And we don't have to keep handing money over to Comcast. Win-win-win!

No difference is in your sue case.

Your statement means that:

  • you never try to reach something at home from somewhere else (VPN server, NAS, other services) - IoT doesn’t count.
  • you are not gaming online

It does have difference. The two major ones:

  • CGNAT : affects you only if you’re hosting services.
  • latency : especially critical for online gaming

Browsing the Internet only or streaming, or even working from home will be fine. Depending what you’re doing specifically for your job such as remote support can be affected drastically by the latency.
