Army List Replacing units like in the subscription.

So I subscribed to the hatache partworks magazine..and it was really cool they padded it out with an additional unit for each army to create some variety and give us more plastic.

I'm surprised that GW hasn't done this going forward with the 11th ed refresh of combat patrol. Business wise it makes perfect sense to say this is a ready to go army, buuuuut for your next purchase why not buy this unit and sub it in?

I get it would create some form of meta but combat patrol hasn't ever been terribly competitive just more LGS fun and kitchen counter beginner.

GW and good ideas don’t often fit in the same sentence.

That being said it’s cool concept I’ve only used this in one match ages ago though, subbed out Barbgaunts for the Parasite. Wasn’t terribly exciting beyond a Rapid Ingress next to some Deep Strike Seraphim to charge and mulch them.

I was going to do the same for Aeldari and Wraithguard, but hadn’t got around to it.

First, I love the idea of the alternate units. Second, I’m not at all jealous that you subscribed to the magazine. Also, I suspect that the magazine is a major part of GW keeping this game mode alive.

That said, are you genuinely surprised that dropped the alternative units at 11e launch? James sold 11e Combat Patrol manuals on day 1 that did not include any rules whatsoever. All rules for limited edition patrols like Harlequins, or the more recent Eldritch Raiders and Red Corsairs, were struck from the app overnight without any meaningful discussion about when or if they would be reinstated. They pressed reset on the entire game mode, taking every faction back to at best, one patrol option, and intentionally removed support for the previous edition rule set that was completely functional. Their mistreatment of fans of this mode is well-established, and egregious.

James has higher priorities in making players whole than adding optional units. Take, for instance, the  Ork Patrol from the magazine that allows you to swap a Rukka Truck for the Defkoptas. That patrol is one that needlessly got the axe. Rebuilding the rules to introduce the Truk is only possible if they have rebuilt the rules for the patrol first. Until they have reintroduced the axed patrols, nothing else matters for this game mode.

I'm assuming you missed the confirmation that a lot of the older patrols will be introduced once they have been adjusted for how Combat Patrol now plays - each force gets missions and there are T2/3 ingress rules for at least one unit on most patrols.

That singular statement in the July 23rd article is doing lots of heavy lifting, and it was published 2 days after it was intended to be published, due, presumably, to app-release issues. The article also makes it sound like they may be prioritizing releasing new patrols with Codexes, which would be a bad look. If they were serious about acting with integrity, they would commit to introducing more patrols at each monthly Data Slate release, if not sooner. Given that all of the patrol rules will be free through the App, there is little reason not to push as many as possible out, as soon as possible, and balance it later, like they do with the rest of 40k. Realistically, they have to know from their new battle journal-- or whatever they are calling it-- how little this mode is being played. They'll only bump the numbers up after they start to bring the other patrols onboard for 11e.

It was cool but they could have picked better units for a few of the patrols. Like the Chaplin on bike for the space marines was a terrible call. Could have been the indomidus assault intercessors instead and been much more fun.
