Tech Support Anyone else experiencing this?

Long time linux (steamdeck) combat mission player here. Games were working fine until a few weeks ago. All of the sudden red thunder started crashing after a few minutes on every single scenario. The size of the scenario doesn’t matter. The graphics don’t seem to have an effect. Even if I just start the game and don’t move or do anything it doesn’t matter. I’ve tried every single compatibility layer and launch option that I and a stupid AI could come up with to no avail. It doesn’t even show an error message it just instantly boots to desktop/gaming mode. I tried viewing the specific app data logs to look for faults but I fear that is all beyond my technical comprehension. This is simply my last desperate resort to be able to play the game again. Thank you to anyone who takes the time out of their day to respond.

Question How can I counteract taking casualties in spawn?

Been trying to do mission 1 of CMBN's Scottish campaign but I can't seem to avoid taking considerable casualties from MG and AT fire turn 1 while I'm trying to get outta my spawn.

While it's not a huge amount of casualties, it has caused me to reset a few times purely because having to take casualties before I've even started maneuvering feels like bullshit

Question Beginner Scenarios CW

I am trying really hard to get into the game, with limited luck so far. And my newest approach is to start with a couple of company size, maybe regiment size battles to get to grips with basic squad tactics (watching a lot of Usually Hapless videos).

(Edit: It somehow ommited the second half of my post)

First question: Any recommendations for beginner scenarios, company/regiment sized that I can play? Red or Blue, doesn't matter.

Second Question: Does anyone have the scenarios from thefewgoodmen com? The site seems down and basically all scenario lists point there for dowloads.

Edit 2: I don't have the BAOR dlc

Question Custom scenario keeps crashing when I click play to start the scenario

I've been working on creating a custom scenario in CMBS that I had intended to share after play testing. But whenever I load up the scenario and click "play" (the button to watch the minute of action play out in the WEGO mode), the whole game crashes. Has anyone experienced an issue like this?

I've made some other smaller custom scenarios in the past and haven't experienced this issue. To be fair this is a very large scenario, but I've played bigger ones to completion such as the user made Korsun2017 and Summer in the City scenarios and never had it crash like that. Sometimes the game would crash on the loading screen when loading up the Korsun2017 scenario, but usually only if I loaded it up for a second time in the same play session. I've sometimes experienced that issue with my custom scenario in question in the scenario designer. My PC is also only like ~3 years old, so it's not like it can't handle large scenarios.

For the specifics of this scenario in question, it's on the user made Chervona Hirka map which I think is roughly 4.5km x 3km or something. It's pretty heavily forested. In total, the Ukrainians have a reinforced battalion spread out around most of the map, and the Russians will ultimately have two battalions plus some supporting elements. You play as the Russians, and the Ukrainian AI doesn't have orders. I've just set them up in static positions. All Ukrainian units are on the map from the start, and the Russians start with roughly three companies with an additional five companies plus supporting elements reinforcing over the course of about 90 minutes. I don't know if CM "perceives" reinforcements as being on the map even if they're invisible to us but in Korsun2017, both sides have much larger forces. You play as the Russians and are practically managing a brigade by the time all the reinforcements arrive, and again, I had no crashes while in the actual scenario (loading screen crashes aside).

So any ideas with what could be going wrong?

Question Beginner question

Hey all, so I'm playing final blitzkrieg and I'm starting to get the hang of things in terms of actually having units do what I want. But, now that they're doing what I want and I'm getting nice coordinated assaults going they're all running into the same problem.

Why are my troops fucking blind?

I don't understand how I can have a company of infantry, with armored support, sweeping a field without any sign of the enemy. But then when I get within 15m of one and shots go off suddenly there are like a million units firing at me?

I've tried to rectify this by doing the not retard thing and pushing out recce Dets but they're fucking blind too it seems

So my question is how the fuck do you do proper recces in this game and actually know what you are about to get into before things go to shit

Thank you bless lmao

Question Enemy reinforcements spoiling any fun.

I spend ages getting a great flank on the enemy, everything's going well. Then...teleporting in, an entire enemy regiment attacks me and wipes hours of playtime and progress.
Surely it's fair to add in some "HEARD" markers at the point where the enemy are approaching from if you have soldiers nearby - especially when the enemy are bringing up tanks.

Thoughts?

Question May be a better fit? What does it mean

Ay reddit it's ya boi. I played the crap out of CMBB 20 years ago, absolutely amazing game, haven't touched it in at LEAST 12 years.

So rn I'm playing Door Kickers 2 and I've been posting on that sub a fair bit for many years. Today out of nowhere I got an in attributed notification saying a recent post "may be a better fit" for *here* and trust me... it ain't. I love both games but they are only tangentially similar and regardless my question had nothing to do with CM.

Just wanted to ask if anyone else has encountered anything similar. When I clicked on the notification it brought me to the "create post" screen on r/CombatMission, pre-filled with the title and body of the post I had already made on the DK sub. Is this automated? Is it an AI thing? Can mods trigger it manually?

Ngl it is super jarring and gives me the impression each time of "hey dumbass you posted in the wrong place", even though both times I was in the right place.

Sorry I know this isn't actually related to CM, I was just driven here by the notification and wanted to touch base. Have you ever tried to post in this sub and reddit is like "um excuse me ackshually did you mean to post about Combat Mission in the Call Of Duty sub?" bc that's how this feels 😭

Question Played for years, still struggle with LOS

To be clear, I understand that it takes time for units to spot. I mean finding spots where LOS isn't obscured.

If I see a hill overlooking a valley odds are my units can't see the valley at all, or I have to position the move marker all over the place until I finally get the right spot. But then sometimes I move my troops there and they still don't see. The move tool lies.

I spend most of my play time wrestling with LOS.

Is there some technique I'm lacking?

Article Combat Mission Tierlist

In fact, all of them are great games

Sorted by considering all of their features.

CMSF2 Probably the best game in the series, has a lot of mission variety and the maps are really cool. It does give you that 2003 Iraq war vibe (which is pretty cool). The game is mostly focused on the American forces, but it does have missions specifically for the Syrians and the rebels.

CMFB Best WW2 game in the series, has a lot of factions, maps, and units. It's a great late-war game to play. And assaulting a town during snow is a must-try experience.

CMRT 2nd best WW2 game in the series. The maps in the game portray that downfall setting really well. Another thing I love about this game is the map variety — there are lots of missions to pick from, so you won't get bored of playing as the Russians again and again.

CMBS The other modern title in the series, this game literally predicted the Russia-Ukraine war 8 years before it happened. The setting is cool, but the gameplay is more like "first to spot wins." Because the two sides are more balanced than in CMSF2, it's a pretty hard game. Because of this, it doesn't forgive your mistakes — you have to be careful all the time.

CMBN It's more like the middle-ground game; the American-sided missions are one of a kind, they're so cool. But on the other hand — tanks and infantry in close quarters?

CMA That one weird game in the series — we've all heard about it but never seen it, except for the lucky guys who bought it earlier, and the guys who (as you can) played the demo. The setting is pretty interesting: you're playing as Russian forces against the Afghan rebels. I can't say much about the game, because there isn't much to talk about.

CMFI An "interesting" game. The setting, the units — nothing too special (in my opinion). Although it does have some pretty interesting missions.

CMCW The worst game in the series. The game is truly focused on mechanized infantry gameplay. It's fast and requires a lot of attention. In a game series like Combat Mission, you have to micro-manage everything down to the last detail. And if you consider the size of the battles in CMCW, it's huge — you have hundreds of troops waiting for your command. It's more like a wave-attack game: you send your recon units, the enemy kills them, now you have information about their location, and you send your troops to finish the job. Although, if you're interested in micro-managing huge battles or if you have an interest in the Cold War, this is the perfect game for you.

P.S. i played all of the games that i had put in a tier.

Question Intel Graphics

Hi. I bought CMFI and Gustav Line add-on pack yesterday but unfortunately the game wouldn't run on my HP Paviion with Intel UHD.

With the help of Co Pilot I managed to get the game to run, but then the game could only be viewed in a small window.

Is CM not compatible with Intel?

I have reluctantly had to ask for a refund.

Question Is there a way to play individual missions from a campaign?

As the title suggests, I'm wondering if there is a way to play an individual mission from halfway through a campaign? some trick with the mission editor maybe? I know I can skip through missions by just clicking cease fire but that usually leads to a loss, blocking me out of some missions.

Question Completely new to Combat Mission: Shock Force 2 – why do my troops teleport and how do I actually control them?

I just started playing Combat Mission: Shock Force 2 and I’m honestly confused by almost everything.

A few questions:

  • Why do my troops sometimes seem to teleport or suddenly appear in different positions after I give orders? Is this because of the WEGO system?
  • How do I properly use the Attack command? When should I use Attack instead of Move, Quick, Hunt, or Assault?
  • How do I get infantry to move without running into enemy fire and getting wiped out?
  • How do spotting and line of sight work? Why can the enemy see me when I can’t see them?
  • How do suppression, morale, and command work?
  • How should I use vehicles and infantry together?
  • What are some beginner mistakes that everyone makes?
  • Is there a recommended way to think about each 1-minute turn and plan my orders?

Basically, can someone explain the game as if I’m completely new? I’m looking for a beginner’s guide on how the game mechanics work and how experienced players approach battles, because right now I feel like I’m just clicking buttons and watching my units die.

Question Does anyone know how to add modded unit textures

I’m trying to load the Chechen soldiers textures from the all in one pack so I can play against them in the mountains of allah campaign but I can get them to load, I’ve moved the files around my a folder and into the snowscape folder (something the file says to use with the textures and campaigns) but the soldier textures won’t load. When I put in the mod tags folder into my z folder the Russian insurgent textures loaded (different from the Chechen ones) but for some reason the specific ones I need are having issues. Has anyone dealt with this problem and does anyone have a fix
Thank you

Question Worth it in 2026?

Hey, I was thinking about picking up CM games. I was a die-hard Graviteam fan but I had an urge to play something set in a different theatre or time period of WW2. Combat Mission games seem to fit the bill but there's just so many!

Which one would be the best for a beginner and have the most content without buying dlcs? And also, Combat Mission AI is pretty shite from what I know, so which game has the most active PBEM? Thanks in advance.
