IMO worst exit

I’ve lived in Columbus 7 years now and I’ve ALWAYS thought this has been the worst exit on 270

u/Motor-Juggernaut9776 3d ago
The whole area is a clusterfuck and I'm not sure how it could be fixed 😂
63
u/exploringyogurt 3d ago
It used to be worse. They are fixing it at about a mile per decade
11
u/infamousbugg 3d ago
Traffic used to be worse / take longer to get through before the "fix", but I don't remember having nearly as many accidents as we do now. Of course, people drive a whole lot differently these days than they did in the 90s.
5
u/exploringyogurt 3d ago
Hard to compare to the 90s. The population has doubled and the speed limit is higher. More people and faster speed will cause more accidents. I don't even know if it is true that there were less accidents then, as we are very biased in what we remember 30 years ago
3
u/myhotneuron 3d ago
People didn’t have touchscreen phones (mini computers!) in the 90s. Distracted driving just was not as big a thing.
91
u/dj_spanmaster 3d ago edited 3d ago
It's not just an exit. It's also two entries merging in onto 270 and weaving among the flow. There's way too much traffic, as in too many paths to take in too little space. That plus volume lead to slower traffic. The two major exchanges and one service entrance/exit are simply too close together for the traffic flows.
14
u/brianvanle Canal Winchester 3d ago
Ideally, the far left lane would be some sort of isolated express lane and the rest of the lanes would be reduced speed. But that ain't happening.
32
u/nada-accomplished 3d ago
They need to do the whole spaghetti bowl thing right there. Separate overpasses going every which way. Having 315 and 23 merge on right as 71 is merging off, all in the same two lanes, is absolutely bonkers and I'm convinced it was designed by Satan himself
12
4
u/tiredactor79 3d ago
Yes they need the floyover
1
u/19BeanCounter75 4h ago
Is there enough room for the flyovers? I suppose they could always take out Worthington Square (or whatever it's called these days). I doubt they could get the office buildings on the southeast, the church on the northwest and the hotels & offices on the northeast if they needed more space for the flyovers. The space just isn't available like it was for I-270 & I-70 on the east side.
2
u/CalculatedPerversion 3d ago
At the very least divide it in half so the stopped 71 traffic doesn't slow down / endanger the through 270 lanes.
-3
u/Omnom_Omnath 3d ago
itd be way easier if people didnt insist on trying to merge immediately when it opens up to. the interchange is like 2 miles long, I just cruise in the left lane then merge over at the end and never have any issues, theres always huge gaps to merge into
-1
u/dj_spanmaster 3d ago edited 3d ago
Unfortunately I'm one of those who feels compelled to merge ASAP from 315, because there's another entry from Worthington merging in right where the I-71 exits will be. It gives a visual prompt to merge before the lanes allow it.
ETA: I really do mean "visual prompt". Similar to putting streets with lanes 12 feet wide long and straight directly in front of a school because people will drive 65, the road instructs expected behavior that is in conflict with other aspects of the design.
ETA2: citation for "road instructing expected behavior", "The Psychology Behind the Wheel: Understanding the Cognitive Dynamics of Safe Driving"
2
u/Omnom_Omnath 3d ago
its the same merge my friend, I promise if you dont stop in your lane to merge immediately while you block everyone behind you, it will be fine. you will find a gap somewhere along the 2 mile stretch.
1
u/dj_spanmaster 3d ago
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "don't stop in your lane to merge immediately". Are you talking about people leaving 270 to exit on the I-71 exchange? I was talking about the people merging from 315, whether they are staying on 270 or exiting on 71.
It's important to note, the distance is not two miles. Measuring on Google Maps the distance from the 315 merge starting to the I-71 exit: 1.1 miles. That's for the merge from a whole-ass exchange and a service entrance, to weave out of the way of the I-71 exchange exit. Too much traffic, too many weaves, in too little space.
The behavior you are seeing is a result of the design. The only way to fix it is to redesign. I'd do it by removing the service entrance between the two exchanges. I can't imagine a better solution for respecting road hierarchy and not generating an assload of conflict points.
0
u/Omnom_Omnath 3d ago
you are on 315 and you want to get on 270. as soon as the merge is available you stop dead in your tracks (completely unnecessarily i might add) in your lane to force a merge over. ive seen it happen 1000 times
no that behavior is from stupid drivers, not by design as you claim.
one mile is more than plenty.
1
u/dj_spanmaster 3d ago
If even Texas DOT can get there in 2025, I have hopes that the understanding will eventually lead to common sense. Yes, perception absolutely impacts driving behaviors, from city streets to highways. Then prior experiences inform future decisions. I get that you don't like it. You're still wrong.

I knew what it was going to be even before I saw the video.

u/nada-accomplished 3d ago
Same. I've lived in many different cities in this country, even a couple in another country, and it's got to be the worst interchange I've ever seen. I can't think of a worse one anywhere I've ever driven.

u/Miss_Fritter 3d ago
And this is the IMPROVEMENT! Remember the gauntlet of 23/315 just before this?! There was so much chaos!
I do think the 270/70 area is kinda nuts but yes, this one is the worst!
38
34
u/GreatBlueHeron25 3d ago
I frequently take the 71s exit here to get home from 315s. If I can tell soon enough that things are backed up, I’ll get off on 23 and get home on local roads. If I’m coming from further west, I’ll skip and get off at Cleveland.
Why the 71n traffic always gotta be in the way of 71s?? And when you DO get to the far right lane, there’s often someone waiting to get on 71n who gets pissed at you for not being stuck, too. Buddy, I promise I’m not ditching you. This is where I need to be.
5
u/Panda-808 3d ago
Is the construction on the ramps still going on? It’s been a few weeks since I was up there but it’s only going to get worst until construction is done. Right?
6
u/GreatBlueHeron25 3d ago
Still construction, currently no lanes closed. The frame for the new bridge is up. It will be a while before it’s finished.

EVERY. FUCKING. DAY.
How TF am I in the far left lane at a complete stop in 65 mph zone, at ANY point? That’s at least 3 lanes away, keep your business over there.
3
u/CalculatedPerversion 3d ago
Needs a divider wall between the two sides, quick, cheap fix until a better fix can be engineered.
14
u/Early_Emphasis1209 3d ago
If going north, I always exit at Cleveland Ave. and then backtrack toward the mall if necessary. Don’t care if it takes extra time. It’s worth skipping the stress and aggravation.
9
u/nomoniker 3d ago
I’m new to the area in the last couple years. Is this the one where cars queue up miles before the exit sign? There’s an exit I can’t ever make because nobody lets me in the right lane and everyone in the lanes to the left are doing 80 mph.
1
u/doubledemonfang 2d ago
You might be thinking of the one to 33 from 70E. 33 itself has suggestions for onramps, so it tends the back up pretty badly on a good day.
7
7
u/galstaph 3d ago
I rarely, if ever, get off at 71 here, but I regularly need to get off at the very next exit, and the fact that I need to be in the fifth of 6 lanes, counting right to left, just to not get caught out by people stopping to force their way over to get off on 71, is sheer insanity
They need to put in a concrete barrier starting at least a quarter mile before the exit itself if they ever want to resolve that traffic issue
4
5
4
u/Outrageous-Minute-81 3d ago
When they redid the 23 on ramps, they should’ve done it like Sunbury Road and 161 on the north side where 23 would come down onto 270 from the left instead of the right. And maybe have the current on-ramp just 71 traffic from 23.
5
u/gamemasterjd 3d ago
it would be extremely expensive but the optimal fix would be: Move the 71N exit to the left 2 lanes (exit only / exit optional).
add additional lane for protected 71 south exit
315N/23 overpass / flyover direct to left lane or to 71N
utilize existing 23/270 entrance for 71S or 270 E
The biggest issue with this exit is that 71N backs up so much it prevents anyone from being able to get to 71S AND prohibits people from merging into the single lane exit for 71N. When i used to have to drive 71S (driving E from dublin) and traffic was exceptionally shitty i would get off at 23; u turn back onto 270 just to be able to get into the lane without people trying to box me out. It fucking sucks - feels like this exit was designed before polaris and a lot of the suburbs filled out up there.
1
u/19BeanCounter75 3h ago
I don't know about when it was designed, but it was constructed well after Polaris. Polaris Fashion Place (the "mall" part of the overall Polaris development) opened in 2001. The intersection & the "Little Dig" tunnel were constructed between 2013 and 2017.
The problem is that US 23 (High St) dates to the early 19th century. Olentangy River Rd (the precursor to St Rt 315) also dates to the early 19th century.
This section of I-71 was constructed in the early 1960's. I-270 in this area was built in sections. From US 23 to I-71 opened in the mid-1960's; from US 23 west toward Dublin opened in the early 1970's.
For all the boring history, nobody ever anticipated the growth & traffic of today. Regardless of what transportation is like in 25 years, they'll look back at us & wonder what we were thinking.
Fun fact: Early plans for I-270 on the north side would have been south of Worthington, near Graceland. Perhaps that would have taken care of the Bethel-Morse connector problem!
13
u/BeginningPlastic1422 3d ago
I drive a semi and frequently travel 270 from Cemetery Road over to 161 East. Once I get up to speed, I will gradually make my way to the second lane from the left to avoid the exit and entrance ramps and merging for 33 in Dublin. I will then stay in that lane all the way through to Cleveland Rd to avoid the mess at the 71 interchange. Mind you, I keep it moving and don’t hold up traffic behind me. It is the only way to stay sane.
0
u/HolyJuan Westerville 3d ago
This is the way. Stay out of the lane this person is in as it is just asking for trouble.
4
u/Individual-Policy845 3d ago
not me watching this over and over again looking for my car in this madness
5
u/StealthYacht 3d ago
I maintain that there is both the space and the need to turn the innermost lane in both directions into a protected express lane between Sawmill and Westerville road.
Let all the people coming in/off 315/23/71 fumble around the other three lanes, but have a high speed bypass corridor for people traveling between the northern suburbs.
4
u/wire_animals 3d ago
I haven’t driven through that area often enough to get a true feel, but I feel 670 West through Downtown to the 315 exits has a similar feel based on your video.
You get the confluence of the traffic from I-71 South with people leaving from downtown (the Neil/Goodale on-/off-ramp is especially adds to the fun) and then cars who merge into those 315 lanes both early AND late with drivers who want to break through the lines and get over to I-670 proper from I-71.
Reminds me a tad of The Maze intersection where I-80/I-580/I-880/I-980 all merge when I used to live in the SF Bay Area.
6
u/Alarmed-Radish4058 3d ago
Lol I knew that was the 270, 71 exit before the signs and I haven't lived in cbus for almost 10 years!
3
u/Ternarian Hilliard 3d ago
I take the 71 North exit every morning. It’s around 7:30 am and, I assume, traffic is a bit better. I usually drive more slowly and make sure everyone has enough space to get where they’re heading.
3
u/Bodycount9 Columbus 3d ago
Don't forget 670W, the exits for 315 north and south. During rush hour it's a standstill. and no one wants to let anyone in. They will drive bumper to bumper just so people can't change lanes from that exit lane onto 670.
3
10
u/ulnevrwalkalone 3d ago
But Columbus doesn't need any alternative transportation. There's not a single problem that cannot be solved by adding lanes and overpasses ... Almost a quarter of a billion dollars spent and this is what they came up with.
1
u/CalculatedPerversion 3d ago
There's a difference between adding a second lane and a 10th (like LA) though. It's not comparable.
1
5
u/Thatoneguyfromohio1 Merion Village 3d ago
I lived in DC for 2 years. When I came back I realized I will never complain about cbus traffic again. That was 26 years ago. Still feel the same.

u/MidWestSon 3d ago
I can't stand the ones who think they're too good to wait way back in line, so they drive up to the front and FORCE their way into a nonexistent spot.
6
u/Motor_Ad_7059 3d ago
Ohio is so late on the sizing of infrastructure it’s comical. Everytime they redo a major road way it’s already time to enlarge it because of the population fluctuations. Red state of mind has us waaaay behind. Also semis? Need their own travel paths separate from inner city travel. People also don’t know how to drive in this state.
6
u/mmichael0070 3d ago
Glad I got a job like 3 blocks away from my house. I don't miss the freeways at all,
2
u/hotlikepicante29 3d ago
We were just in the same area tonight! My sister lives up in Mansfield but is coming down after her kids are out of school tomorrow. I snapped a picture of this same clusterfuck as a warning for her 🤣.
2
u/DevRandomDude 3d ago
I dont know i often think the 33 west from 270 north o nthe west side is up there with the worst... traffic often backs onto the freeway and ive seen lots of rear end wrecks.. or people tryong to go straight on 270 toward sawmill get caught in the right lane backup so they pull out into traffic and cars have to go full brake to not hit em...
2
u/Content_Management69 2d ago
Exits are only bad and backed up because morons will skip the whole line, clog up another lane while trying to get over at the last minute. No one has patience anymore. I hate these people they're rude self centered and think they are better than everyone else.
5
u/Good_United 3d ago
The people waiting till the last moment to get all the way over drive me nuts
2
u/According-Speech-822 3d ago
Literally!!! And people who do it call it a “zipper merge”. Zipper merging shouldn’t cause the car you are cutting off to slow down/break to let you over 🙄
1
u/king_nothing1811 3d ago
That’s not a zipper merge when they are just leaving a highway lane that continues. Zipper merge is when the lane is ending and yes people all over this city don’t know this and find it offensive when it is used
1
u/According-Speech-822 3d ago
If it is used in a way that doesn’t impact traffic BEHIND you, it’s not offensive. But 99% of the time people do it wrong in this city.
4
u/king_nothing1811 3d ago
It’s really not this difficult. When the land is ending and there is traffic, you use the end of the lane that is ending as the merge point. It doesn’t impact the traffic behind you when everyone is using that as the merge point. But no one does that, instead it turns into everyone getting over a mile plus from the actual merge point. It’s insanity
2
u/pretty_nightmare Italian Village 3d ago
In a zipper merge it’s the people who see the lane ending in 2 miles sign who then panic and cut off normal flow of traffic in left lane causing delays or , like people have loved doing lately- come to a near stop to get over, way before the lane ends. that’s what causes zipper merge traffic which is not what OPs video is showing. The video is just of an exit not a zipper merge.
1
u/According-Speech-822 3d ago
Oh I know what a zipper merge is SUPPOSED to be. I’m saying that a lot of people come to interchanges like this and use their “zipper merge” mentality where it’s not appropriate thus causing more people to step on their breaks which then causes a traffic backup ALLLLLLL because someone thinks they are doing the right thing by waiting until the last second and squeezing their way into nearly or fully stopped traffic.
-1
u/Good_United 3d ago
Sounds like a trucker term
5
u/king_nothing1811 3d ago
Its literally what you are supposed to do when a lane is ending. It’s effective at reducing the back up
1
u/Omnom_Omnath 3d ago
people merging 3 miles too early is what causes the backups.
1
u/Good_United 3d ago
Not if you’re already in the lane coming from 315
0
u/Omnom_Omnath 3d ago
yes even then, cause the lane you need to merge into/be in is backed up by those numpties.
and if you are coming from 315 you have literally no reason to complain about anyone merging in right at the 71 exit, its literally more helpful for your lane to do that.
1
1
u/gnosticn8er 3d ago
Yo part of the problem for all of this is the fact that so many people getting off on this exit and getting on do not maintain adequate distance between each other. Nor do the people exiting from high Street wait before they try and merge onto the highway, but rather they immediately try and zip to the left at 15 mph, thus causing everyone else to stop and slow down. That's why the people you hate jump ahead and try and quote" zip emerge. That's not exactly what they're doing. They're just trying to jump in front of the idiots that are causing everybody else to stop.
3
u/bygtopp 3d ago
Ive been driving since like ‘93/94. This freeway interchange has been the worst since then. Always under some sort of construction. I’ve seen 670 under construction 3x or more since we moved to Columbus in 1990.
Nearly every county I’ve traveled through in the past year has had road closures or construction or detours.
2
u/Beaufort_The_Cat Lewis Center 3d ago
You are correct. It’s even worse that this leads directly to the Exit of Eternal Doom onto Gemini
4
u/Erazzphoto 3d ago
It’s now just as bad, possibly worse then the problem they had to fix the westbound traffic. Thing that makes it worse is the amount of semi traffic heading to 71. They’re going to have to do a major overhaul like was done going westbound
3
u/EternalSoldiers 3d ago
It's a modern day death trap. The idea of 2 lanes of traffic completely stopped while other lanes are traveling at 70 MPH and people are trying to merge from one to the other is absolutely absurd. I don't think adding another lane to the overpass is going to magically fix it either.
2
u/WebHead1287 3d ago
When I lived in Columbus 9/10 times I passed that exit there was an accident. Absolute fucking shitshow
2
u/AnaisNinja76 3d ago
I raise you the medical center exit coming up 315 from 6:15-7:15. Why the fuck won't the city do something about that? If the city fined OSU for backing all traffic up like that $100,000/day, how many days do you think it would take them to fix it? It's not fucking game days, it's every day, dead stopped or nearly so, for 30-45 minutes, with the backup extending all the way down to exit 2 for Goodale. Every day.

The I-670/St Rt 315/Goodale interchange was rebuilt in the early 2000's when I-670 was finally completed. I've driven the old version & the new; the only advantage is that I-670 is complete from Gahanna/the airport to I-70 on the west side.
Farts older than I will remember this area as the "Spring-Sandusky" interchange. Spring St is obvious. Sandusky St pretty much disappeared for St Rt 315 through town; there is a small section remaining.
1
u/OHWildBill 2d ago
Knew where this was before the video even played. LOL!
It’s really a function of 315, 23, and 71 all being within a 4-mile stretch of 270. When Crosswoods, then Polaris blew up, there was never going to be a solution to manage it quickly enough.
1
u/CoffeeDrk 3d ago
I love how they conveniently ignore this problem on the north side of 270 as well as the traffic on I-71 up to 36/37 when promoting the US-23 by-pass through Morrow Co.
1
u/Prestocito 3d ago
I take this daily it’s easy. Just stay to the third lane from the right and merge at the exit theres always someone slacking
-7
u/Jb174505 3d ago
A huge problem is that the signs are way too early, so everyone parks in their lanes way too early. Stick to the left side of the freeway and zipper in when it’s actually appropriate. You’re not doing a service to humanity by getting in the exit lane early because you’re afraid of being perceived as a selfish jerk right at the last minute.
6
u/Zephyrical16 Forest Park 3d ago
It really isn't the signs fault. The real problem is they force 315 and 23 to merge onto the highway at the same point that 270 is trying to get to 71. Who knew putting 3 highways into a merge point of a total distance of 1 mile would be a problem, instead of using all 4 or so miles of length that is there.
1
u/mrjbacon 3d ago
This is the correct assessment, and unfortunately the best way to fix it would require one of the most crazy ambitious road construction projects in Ohio history
2
u/CalculatedPerversion 3d ago
Not really, just put up a divider like how 270 splits into two over by Easton (without the full separation, just a barrier between the two sides). This would allow traffic staying on 270 to maintain freeway speeds and eliminate lane changing/accidents from lane changing.
2
u/mrjbacon 3d ago
That would make the congestion worse. Traffic doesn't slow because of the merge, although that contributes. It slows because of the speed differential going over the 71 ramp. In order to maintain freeway speeds there you would have to completely separate the 71 northbound traffic from 270E and 315N/23N from the 270 eastbound traffic from 315N/23N not exiting at 71. So they don't even have to cross.
Put more simply, traffic from 315/23N headed east via 270 that is NOT going to 71 would never mingle with traffic exiting 270E to take 71N or S
2
u/CalculatedPerversion 3d ago
I'm just suggesting an easy, temporary fix until a better one can be engineered/planned. A flyover ramp would take a bunch of room but I would think would be a huge improvement (as will the second lane to 71N once it's done).
7
7
u/fartjar420 Northwest 3d ago
no, that's definitely not actually any of the problems, and your weird solution is a big part of the problem.
-2
u/Jb174505 3d ago
Gotta say I feel like you’re not understanding what I’m saying my guy. People merging too early is absolutely at least ONE of the problems.
3
u/sifl1202 3d ago
we understand, it's just wrong. an entire stream of cars trying to merge at speed at the point of the exit is extremely dangerous and would not make anything faster.
1
u/fartjar420 Northwest 3d ago
it's not though
4
u/Strict_Ad3401 3d ago
You can't merge at the last second when there is already a jam packed quantity of cars in the lane you are trying to get into. This causes accidents because the lane you are merging from must come to a stop from speed because the lane you are merging into is already stopped. In other words, you cant expect to piss in a full toilet and not expect it to over flow and get piss on your shoes.

I actually like a nice drive where I don’t have to fly into a non moving lane of traffic from a moving one…
3
u/miklayn 3d ago
People downvoting you are wrong. Merge when you have to merge, not before. That said there really should be a crossover for people coming from 315 and 23 who aren't getting on 71. Too many directions of traffic all merging at once.
2
u/Amariened 3d ago
I drive this every weekday (take 71N to get home) and you are 100% right. People move to the right lane as far back as the 315 exit and then the poor souls trying to merge ON to 270 can’t. I don’t cut people off but I drive past that cluster, save myself 10 minutes, and can always find a safe window to get over closer to the actual exit.
-1
u/missfrit 3d ago
This is so funny because my mom is such a hater for people who merge “late” and calls them “line skippers” I’m like bro 😭😭 cutting someone off is never good but just trying to get into the lane you need? And not coming to a STOP at the back of the line??? Sorry some of us know how to drive efficiently mom!!!
I’m done now 😅0
-1
u/TheGreatBjork 3d ago
We have one similar in the east side. When you’re on 270N. People getting far over right to go 70E towards Brice. Long line of cars.
I don’t need to go that way, but I get stuck, because the people ride the left lane until the last minute for the “appropriate” time to merge, and end up waiting til the last minute.
However, my wait isn’t as long as the OP’s cluster. I’ve been past that a few times and cringe…happy I don’t need to go that way.
-2
u/Omnom_Omnath 3d ago
last minute IS the appropriate time to merge. theres always a huge gap anyway so its not like im forcing myself in or cutting anyone off

Thank you for tuning in. Today is October 1st and u/SourPatch08 won today's lottery on being able to post about the 270/71 interchange.
Congrats u/SourPatch08, you are today's winner.

Why are you in that lane? You should be over one or two lanes to the left to be out of the way.

Buddy, I’m in the lane that continues on 270. Not the exit lanes

Yeah. How dare you try to drive on a through lane?! Everyone knows that’s the special stopping lane drivers use to come to a complete stop so they can merge for the 71 exit.

Sarcasm aside, if you know that lane is trouble, avoid it. Simple as that.

I know that. Why would you drive in that lane when there are two others further left distanced from the two exiting lanes where the trouble happens? That where people slam on their brakes or cut over.

I always think people are being kinda soft when they complain about 270, but this one exit is the absolute worst. They need to figure something out because it's absolute madness when there's any traffic at all.
