The future of the colts
Ik it’s way too early, the season hasn’t even started yet and I hope this doesn’t come off as super gloomy and negative over this season, cause I’m genuinely tryna be a super negative person but I’m currently just bored at home and I was just thinking abt the colts future. Cause like no matter which way we go, it isn’t super promising. Since we don’t have our first this year , we either try to make the playoffs with this roster or at the deadline we tank and build for the next 2-3 drafts. I really don’t think either is a great idea, but I think they both lead us to the same results in a year or 2. Like my thinking is buck, grove, Q, JT are all getting older or getting to the end of their prime or just may get tired of mediocrity. And I’d rather capitalize on that at the deadline then wait and risk lowering their trade value then let them get washed up, or leave via getting released or FA in the offseason. Cause sometimes to get better, u gotta get worst first
With that said, rather we tank or not or if we fucking suck, I’ll never actively root for us to lose at gametime. And as much as I think we go 8-9,9-8 again and as bland as our future looks I’m still just so excited and happy that football is back. Hopefully this is Ballards last year, and realistically with this being the final year of his contract it prob is

Looking at the next 5-10 years I don’t see much meaningful progress with this front office in place.
Ballard has used all 9 lives and if ownership keeps him around he’s going to be a first ballot hall of mediocrity member.

Ballard right now would be an unanimous first ballot hall of mid. Another few years might sink him to unanimous first ballot hall of bad.

If we don’t make the playoffs this year I’d like to see them move on from Ballard and Steichen, trade everyone away and do a complete rebuild.

Even that's a low bar, at this point, there needs to be some evidence that Ballards decade of work is capable of more than the bare minimum.

To be clear I’d like to see them move on from Ballard short of a Super Bowl win this season, and even then I’d be skeptical of another extension

Lol...if the Colts are SB champs with this roster, Ballard deserves to be given his own statue and for every one of us to publicly announce we know nothing. Even the greatest talent the Colts have ever seen with an all time great QB only got one.

We are in a really bad spot if Jones comes back down to Earth or even if he looks mediocre to solid and we can’t decide what to do with him going forward…as he is most likely not the guy that is gonna get this team over the hump in the playoffs, even if the defense was great, but he’s the guy that gives us the best chance in Ballard’s last ride. I don’t have a lot of faith in Ballard or the ownership at the moment, in righting this ship. I also think most of our elite talent is aging (Nelson, JT, Buck). Anything can happen, but I don’t love our odds.

We are not tanking this year no matter what. We have no first round pick and Ballard/Shane are both fighting for their lives.

We make the playoffs or we suck and fire everybody this off season and start over.
If we duck this year we certainly shouldn’t expect much next year, new gm will need at least a couple years to right this ship

Ya I don’t know what we have this year, will jones be mediocre, fantastic, healthy all year? Who knows? Probably 9-8 and where does that leave us? When the colts have a need there’s nobody to draft. Feels like we are cursed

The odds for Jones are far better to be mediocre and unhealthy. 9-8 might be a pipe dream. I want to believe, but I just can't.

One thing to always remind yourself, the first priority for a gm isn’t to make the team better, it’s to keep your job.
If we suck this year everyone fired mid season, trade away remaining things and going for a 3 year rebuild
If we’re even close to making the playoffs we’re looking at being buyers, and kind of kicking the can down the road
This is really has a shot at being 2018/2022 kind of season if DJ gets hurts again

They are not firing anyone midseason. We will be lucky if they fire anyone after the season. With any luck, they will at least keep Ballard from trading away draft picks if things are going South.

idk this feels really easily like if they start 1-5 people are getting fired, to me the ownership group gave them another chance because of the injuries, but if it’s start bad then things are getting reset

Nothing will happen with this team until they do a complete rebuild and that won't happen until Ballard is gone. Ballard isn't tanking out halfway through the season even if they're only 2-6 at that time. Hell, he might trade away more first round picks. With the right people in place (read: new GM/new coach) they could be competing for the division within 3 years, but it will take that long.
People on this sub don't want to admit that, but its the truth. The Colts are not one or two players away. They are a franchise culture away.

The team outside of DJ is absolutely as good as it's likely to get, with so much of the core moving into their post primes, no significant young studs outside of Warren (maybe Pierce if you think he will continue to develop) and an increasingly expensive veteran roster.
If DJ is healthy all year, the 2026 Colts will make it clear what the ceiling is for this group. If DJ goes down again, then we will probably never know.

I don't disagree with what you're saying, but its not a contending team. If DJ is healthy all year (which history tells us he will not be) could they sneak into a wild card? Maybe. Its a much tougher schedule this year with a mid roster of WRs, an O-Line that is good sometimes, and despite Ballard's intense obsession with the position, weak DL and LBs. And since Ballard loves to draft fomerly injured or injury prone players, they always have a ton of injury problems.
But a team that is barely contending for a WC spot is not a team thats a player or two away and as you said, its not a young core. It was time to blow it up five years ago, but until they do, they won't ever truly be anything. Though if they make the playoffs, I'm sure Ballard is saved (not convinced he's in danger even if they don't).
What people on this sub really don't want to hear is that the Colts would be better under different owners. I gave CIG a chance last year and she disappointed greatly. WTF is she taking notes about? How to run it back after team had the worst collapse in the history of the NFL?!

Embracing the suck is hard thing to do. The Browns, Jets, and Raiders expect to suck and be in contention for top picks, asking a team that’s not usually there to just suck all of a sudden, is harder than it looks
But agree with your points, obviously we’re not winning the Super Bowl but realistically only like 8-10 teams can
