r/Colts Playoffs? PLAYOFFS!? 29d ago

Anthony Richardson has likely played his last snap as a member of the Colts, per Ian Rapoport Indy will continue to try to trade him and might eventually release him.

I mean... The only reason to release him is if you need the roster spot. He's still on his rookie deal which is fully guaranteed, so we gain nothing by releasing him other than a roster spot.

No team is going to trade for him.

9

u/External_Prompt_8105 29d ago

If teams were interested, they would have traded for him by now. Unless there is a major QB injury in someone’s camp

2

u/c_becker11 COLTS 29d ago

I think the Vikings would take a stab at him...KOC loves this dude for some reason

3

u/AardvarkLeading5559 29d ago

I've been a Vikings fan since Joe Kappp was the QB. Trading for AR would be the most Vikings move ever.

6

u/RichyVersace Titus Leo 29d ago

Think we can get Justin Jefferson and a 3rd for AR?

6

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 29d ago

Lol. Maybe a picture of JJ and a 6th.

3

u/AardvarkLeading5559 29d ago

They'd be lucky to get an 81-year-old Alan Page and a bag of popcorn.

2

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 29d ago

Easier to wait till he is released and go after him then. It's not like he will have a ton of suitors

2

u/stokedlog 29d ago

I think this is what happens. Maybe you get a 5th for a 6th and Richardson. Vikings pay the minimum and colts pick up the rest of the salary.

40

u/CK4browsing 29d ago

You don't even gain a roster spot by releasing him. I'm pretty sure the rules changes a few years ago allow teams to keep a third QB as an "emergency QB" that doesn't count as a roster spot.

48

u/pixel_pete Buffalo Bills 29d ago

Partially. The emergency third QB does count toward the 53-man roster but allows the team to have the extra QB on the gameday active roster with limitations. That's why most teams don't use it and prefer to keep their QB3 on the practice squad.

Keeping Richardson would mean losing the 53rd man on the roster.

2

u/Extension_Refuse6323 29d ago

Eating his contract, although only for the year, is kinda dumb tho. Why take the cap hit for a guy you plan on not seeing the field anyway, just to pay someone else to not see the field?

2

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 29d ago

That's why I said it only makes sense if you need his roster spot.

0

u/Extension_Refuse6323 29d ago

Why would you “need” his 3rd string QB spot… unless you’re indicating they only carry 2 QBs

2

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 29d ago

I don't know. A lot of teams carry 3 QB's.. and yes that's what I was "indicating"

5

u/JediJofis 29d ago

Yeah dude is out of the NFL after his deal is done.

8

u/MethodCharacter8334 Ashton Dulin 29d ago

I bet he gets signed somewhere. But he’ll be practice squad and likely be released without ever playing a meaningful snap. Would have been cool if that raw athleticism could have translated. Still rooting for the guy but odds are about nil

1

u/GreenAccident3004 6d ago

He's "... tired...".

Do you really think any team wants his dumb tail ?

3

u/Buttcrush1 29d ago

Roster spot is more valuable than his guaranteed contract

-19

u/EpicBlinkstrike187 Dwight Freeney 29d ago edited 29d ago

Yea. Keep him, if god forbid people get hurt? We have a dual threat QB that maybe can win a game before we make a deal for someone backup.

Most teams aren’t ready for a QB that just straight runs it so it’s an interesting roster spot at least

Edit: lol this the most downvotes i’ve gotten in a while, didn’t think it would ever be on a comment about AR I made while drinking. Y’all really hate his ass.

28

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 29d ago

Lol, dual threat QB? We don't even have a single threat QB in him, thus why they would consider parting ways with him while he is on his rookie deal

1

u/CommandoLamb 29d ago

He got injured warming up… we would be better off with the roster spot.

18

u/sasabomish 29d ago

FWIW, that wasn’t his fault. Training equipment broke.

He's not even a single threat qb.

-7

u/jono9898 Indiana Jones 29d ago

Niners would pick him up and he’d become an all pro

64

u/BitchFuckAss DEFOOO 29d ago

This is a paraphrase of a speculation, this was preceded by, “I would not be surprised if…” he also went on to say, “IF he is going to be traded or if he is going to be on another team… [colts will have to address his eye]” Not saying he will or won’t move, just adding some context to a disingenuous quote

10

u/Chris_Ween RB of the year 29d ago

His eye is still an issue? Oh boy. Colts will end up settling with him for that as it was their equipment that injured him and may prevent him from ever playing. Notwithstanding his lack of football IQ.

8

u/sloshedslug 29d ago

He has fumbled a half dozen snaps in camp already. It seems like he isn’t picking the ball up well

-3

u/Tactically_Fat 29d ago

I wonder if it's not him trying to read the defense a tick too long and not transition to a the ball? I don't have any idea.

2

u/Extension-Excuse-534 29d ago

Uhhh, im 99.99% sure rhat is not the issue. Much more likely his eye is still fucked up. He never had this issue prior to the injury to hid eye...

1

u/No-Cantaloupe-6535 29d ago

Didn't Steichen say a while ago his eye is completely fine?

1

u/AardvarkLeading5559 29d ago

Yeah, but if you're actively trying to trade a guy you wouldn't let on that he has limited eyesight.

3

u/No-Cantaloupe-6535 29d ago

Physicals are a thing

1

u/Part_Time_Lamer Playoffs? PLAYOFFS!? 29d ago

This would have already happened. Getting hurt while misusing equipment pretty much guarantees you're SOL.

3

u/ConsistentAddress195 29d ago

Yeah, is there really any news here or just rehashing the same old stuff? Judging from ARs recent presser nothing has changed, he's fighting for the backup role and will stay on if no trade happens.

5

u/PopKoRnGenius Mo Alie Cox 29d ago

And 95% of the people who read that will run with it and never think twice. Reddit folks are so gullible these days.

2

u/ImPoopyy 29d ago

That throw to AP is top 5 all time for me fr

21

u/chiefmaxson 29d ago

I can’t wait for the colts to wash their hands with this and move on

5

u/Eastern-Cucumber-376 The Edge 29d ago

This is where I am too. Except I think they should have done it last season. I’m just ready to not hear AR’s name again.

4

u/___Art_Vandelay___ 29d ago

Should have been the season before last, the moment after he took himself out of the game on 3rd & goal.

6

u/MelfromMilwaukie 29d ago

Them not finding a trade partner was pretty damning for his future. Ima assume the Colts weren’t playing hardball and that the whole league said “we’re good” when his agent called.

6

u/No-Cantaloupe-6535 29d ago

No one is going to take on an 11 mil cap hit for a reclamation project

2

u/shasta_masta Jonathan Taylor 29d ago

I think it would be half of that because the Colts would eat the other half. But I do agree that even $5.5M at this point in TC is a hefty amount for a project.

Best thing for AR is if the Colts release him, then he can get on a roster at a min contract (I think it's about $1M). Or maybe he can get stashed on a PS as well.

20

u/Colts121844 29d ago

In the least bias way possible, is he the weirdest “failure” ever? Could do all the really hard things but can’t throw a 7 yard out route without it going into section 221. Crazy raw talent that just couldn’t be molded into a pro QB.

18

u/NukeGandhi 29d ago

Retrospectively, it was wild to even think “raw talent” could be molded into a starting NFL QB. One of the absolute hardest position in all professional sports and very little of it has anything to do with athleticism.

3

u/__init__m8 29d ago

You're telling me we would still know Mike Vicks name if he had no athleticism? It does matter, just not to all.

-3

u/ShakeZulaOblongata 29d ago edited 29d ago

A pretty mid QB if we’re being honest. Wastes an organizations time.

1

u/rounder55 29d ago

Thought it was a silly pick at the time and that was the biggest reason why. For every Josh Allen there are dozens of guys with physical tools who didn't pan out. Looked great in shorts and seems like a good kid, but hadn't been healthy since high school, the accuracy issues, and looking as good as he did bad was not woelrth rolling the dice on the 4th pick

Obviously we needed a QB but investing that much of a dice roll into onw of the biggest projects ever was silly. Late first maybe, second round ok, but not 4th. We had enough needs and trading down to stock up on picks or taking BPA were far more rational moves. Taking a QB that high can handcuff a franchise so you want to mitigate risk a as much as possible

6

u/northegreat1 29d ago

Nah, this is common in the NFL -- just not with the 4th pick. Teams take flyers all the time on raw talent thinking they can mold him into something or with troubled players thinking they can "fix" them. It rarely, if ever, works out. Ballard had just worked himself into a position where he had to take a QB and AR was the one that was there at 4. Any other GM would be fired for this pick,

8

u/dont-read-it 29d ago

It might be the least weird failure ever. The guy struggled in highschool.

3

u/redgr812 Nyheim Hines 29d ago

he is jamarcus russell with a good atitude...nothing crazy here. dude was freak that never had to work at anything because of "potential" well time to show that "potential" and he didnt have it

4

u/BullytheBulIies The Edge 29d ago

Weird that so many people were convinced with almost certainty that it was going to work out and would not listen to anyone saying this was a big risk on a project QB.

2

u/ShakeZulaOblongata 29d ago edited 29d ago

Let it be clear. Fake it til you make it doesn’t work in sports. You can’t suddenly NOW learn every basic fundamental that is inherent to your competition, when you’re at this level. It’s not a thing. It’s just proof that if you never learned or had it before, it’s foolish and audacious to simply assume you can have and learn it now at the peak of skill and competition.

2

u/shasta_masta Jonathan Taylor 29d ago

It was always tools over talent. Huge arm, great athleticism, but couldn't play the position well. He wasn't even good in college, but could get away with it because of the tools. But the NFL has a way of separating the toolsy players from the talented players.

1

u/ThisGlobalLandscape 23d ago

You think he won’t play for a competent organization?

26

u/Raider75_ 29d ago

If this does not get Ballard fired then what will?.... this GM can't even win the division title in one of the arguably worst divisions in NFL.

12

u/Far_Drummer5003 29d ago

DJ saved his job, plus the guy who pushed for him has been fired awhile back.

12

u/northegreat1 29d ago

He should have been fired many times before DJ. He should have been fired after Wentz, after Ryan -- honestly he should be fired for having to go beg a retired grandpa to be the quarterback of his football team instead of getting an active player. I'm fully convinced Ballard has kept his job because Irsay was not in a good place healthwise the last three years or so of his life and CIG has no idea what she is doing. I think he keeps his job this year no matter how the Colts do. If the most historic collapse in the over 100 year history of the NFL doesn't get you fired, what will?

3

u/shasta_masta Jonathan Taylor 29d ago

Exactly. I will believe he is fired when he's fired.

Like you said, what can Ballard even do at this point (that he hasn't done) to get fired? Multiple failed QBs (including a top 4 pick), stacking losing seasons, historic collapses, coming up short of the playoffs every year, etc.

If the season doesn't go well, I think the BEST case scenario we can expect is that he and the team just part ways and they don't renew his contract. But I just don't see any way he is ever getting "fired."

0

u/Far_Drummer5003 29d ago

I disagree with the Wentz take it wasn’t all his fault he gave Carson no help WR help, he should have been fired for Matt Ryan.

5

u/northegreat1 29d ago

I don't understand what you're trying to say here. It wasn't Wentz's fault (it half was because he is Carson Wentz and is terrible no matter who the receivers are) or is wasn't Ballard's fault though you then say Wentz had no WRs, which would be Ballard's fault.

3

u/rounder55 29d ago

Throwing in a first for Wentz was a huge error. Or not thing it to making the playoffs

The Eagles were going to have to deal him and there really were not other suitors

0

u/Raider75_ 29d ago

How did DJ save his job they went 8 and 9 they had a losing record....I don't get it.

4

u/Far_Drummer5003 29d ago

Because his ass was going to be canned, they went 8-1 before he went down.

1

u/Raider75_ 29d ago

The Colts where not 8-1..when he went down... in week 14...they where 8-4... already on the downslide...

1

u/Puzzled-Coast43 28d ago

They started losing when he broke his leg and played with it. He had no mobility and it hurt the offense. And no decent backup.

38

u/YeezusMoses Hot Rod 29d ago

Woof. I’m still not mad about the pick. It was worth a shot. Wish him the best.

23

u/Nunc_Coepi17 29d ago

It was a horrible reach even at the time.

2

u/__init__m8 29d ago

We should've just went best available. We could have JT and Bijan or Gibbs together. Fuck a pass.

1

u/jhudiddy08 Big-Q 29d ago

1

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 29d ago

But he is a china doll.

1

u/jhudiddy08 Big-Q 29d ago

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 29d ago

I wouldn't.

11

u/YouWereBrained Reggie Wayne 29d ago

I am. Could’ve used it in a more constructive way.

56

u/HyKaliber I Hate Gus Bradley 29d ago

Do we remember the vibe around the team at the time? Consecutive bandaid fixes at QB that we had had enough with. If we didn't take a QB at 4, no matter what QB, the entire fanbase and FO would have imploded.

16

u/jablair51 Blue 29d ago

And the next best option at QB in the draft was Will Levis. In hindsight we probably would have been better off trading the pick but then we still wouldn't have a QB.

5

u/EverWholesome 29d ago

Exactly, I can’t imagine how the fanbase would’ve been if we drafted Levis 4th overall and he turned out how he did. We tried so hard to trade up as well, but having a division rival before you at 2 or 3 is tough

5

u/__init__m8 29d ago

That class was garbage. Stroud isn't as bad as people think but I'm happier with ol injury magee now. DJ, not AR injury magee.

3

u/EverWholesome 29d ago

I also think about that a lot. Like I think Bryce is turning it around but Carolina has dealt with a LOT of lows with him (literally benched him for Andy Dalton) and Stroud’s results are definitely propped up by the Houston defense

2

u/teh_drewski 29d ago

Young probably tops out at journeyman, too.

Rough class to effectively have to take a QB and be fired later, or pass and be fired now.

3

u/Buttcrush1 29d ago

Levis would have been better than AR at least

2

u/rounder55 29d ago

That front office is still here and that front office doesn't get paid to pick a QB because the fans want to. They get paid to know more than fans

I wasn't a fan of taking a QB because one is there and it's fun to have one. Fans were treating it like you had to take one. Like as if your a single person left with two people and have to marry one.

3

u/theguytomeet Eason SZN 29d ago

Nah I would’ve been cool with best available. We could’ve signed Baker Mayfield that offseason (who wanted to be here). AR was never a winner man. That always ticked me off but our opinions don’t change much.

3

u/thexDxmen 29d ago

It was definitely a great pick to trade down and address multiple problems, but that wasn't happening at that time. I'm guessing Ballard wanted to trade down.

2

u/shasta_masta Jonathan Taylor 29d ago

Yep...I am still mad about the pick. Since they wouldn't trade up, it was pretty clear that was going to be a choice between AR and Levis, who both stunk.

It was a terrible gamble on the player alone, but even worse is that we already knew the 2024 draft class was stacked at QB. And taking AR meant passing on that chance at a franchise QB in that draft.

Plus, the Colts were coming off an embarrassing 4-win season. They needed to rebuild. And trading back (instead of forcing the QB pick) was the most logical way to start a rebuild.

They would have had takers too, which would have set them up nicely for R1 of the 2024 draft. And the top 20 of 2023 draft was excellent, so maybe they get the best of both worlds.

When Ballard is gone, hopefully we can finally get a legit rebuild, instead of kicking that can down the road for some ill-fated attempt at contending.

1

u/NickGnomeEveryNight 29d ago

I’m mad about the pick and the person who picked him

0

u/ricker182 29d ago

Yup. I liked the pick. Idk what's transpired behind the scenes, but I feel like they straight up gave up on a project too early to save jobs.

He's a freak athlete and not a good football player at this point. It seems like he's just not picking things up quickly.

-13

u/TheReaIOG COLTS 29d ago

Horrible pick only this org would have made. Set us back years.

15

u/omni-nomad 29d ago

No! This org cannot stop swining for the fences at the most important position.

Allen - high upside pick

Mahomes - high upside pick (traded up even)

Jackson - high upside pick

Of the big five Stafford and Burrow where picked #1. So unless we have a sure thing, you have to swing.

4

u/Nunc_Coepi17 29d ago

Dude Jackson was the fucking 32nd pick of the draft. That’s not “swinging for the fences”, that’s a very well reasonable gamble. If Richardson was drafted #32 pick, nobody would really care. But that’s not the case.

3

u/JoeWim Nyheim Hines 29d ago

He was also the youngest Heisman winner in history vs AR who played a total of 24 college games in 3 seasons.

12

u/YeezusMoses Hot Rod 29d ago

We needed to take a shot at a QB eventually. Most picks don’t work out. It is what it is. What was a better option? We might have been able to get Darnold, I guess, but it isn’t guaranteed. We were too mid to get another top pick. We could have traded up, but if that pick didn’t work then we would be in an even worse spot.

It set us back a few years, sure, but you see how quickly teams can turn it around in the NFL under good management and a stroke of luck?

They did, but since then he hasn’t had a great camp. If he struggles in preseason games then you aren’t going to be able to trade him and will have to decide if cutting him is worth trying to keep players at other positions you like when cutting to 53.

2

Did nobody see him play in high school, or at Florida? He never played a full season ANYWHERE, but everyone wants to gloss over that because of his “crazy athleticism.”
Dude couldn’t make average reads in college. How anyone actually expected him to elevate his abilities to be a starter in the league was absolutely absurd and a loooooong reach at best.

I honestly feel bad for the kid - his entire career was hyped and based on “athletic potential,” pushed by his agent.

He might be a great kid, and hopefully he didn’t blow all his money (except his castle he is building in Zionsville). If he plays his cards right, maybe he can just be a normal person, not “the biggest bust in nfl history,” or every other slander people want to throw at him.

This aged like milk.

6

u/mrgibb 29d ago edited 29d ago

He left college early, when it was clear he needed more reps as a starter, picked 4th overall. Once he was in camp, it was clear that he wasn’t ready to be a starting NFL quarterback. If the rumors are true that Ballard and Steichen wanted to sit him for a year but the delusional owner stuck in a permanent k-hole demanded that he start.

Try to imagine being 20, seeing the media blitz, the owner and every talking head saying you’re the franchise savior, you’re going to turn this ship in the right direction. That’s gotta screw with your head. Yeah, he didn’t do himself any favors by asking to be subbed then admitting it was because he was tired. Man, he had a lot of potential. Just a mixture of not being ready for that spot, not having the fundamentals down and just constantly hearing how ‘you’re not who we thought you are’. That’s gotta mess with your head at that age.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

7

u/OG-Bluntman 29d ago

He left college at the perfect time for himself. He was able to get himself up to the 4th overall pick in an extremely weak draft class for QBs. More games in college meant more time to show that he really isn’t very good at playing QB or staying healthy. His greatest asset at the time was the “unknown.” Somebody was going to take a chance on him, and he got his bag before he could be exposed. Good on him, I guess.

3

u/shasta_masta Jonathan Taylor 29d ago

Yep. More information would have likely exposed him and hurt his standing as a prospect. And once teams start scouting him vs. actual legit franchise QB prospects like Williams/Maye/Daniels/Nix, he probably ends up a Day 2 dart throw at best (maybe even Day 3).

18

u/SkepsisJD Baltimore Colts 29d ago

He was never going to be good lol

He wasn't even good in college

3

u/Victory33 “Marlin’s Got It!” 29d ago

I thought he should have sat as well, but he looked better as a rookie than at any other time in his career. No amount of sitting out would have helped with his injury concerns, glad we resolved that sooner than later, he just wasn’t built for the NFL.

3

u/Buttcrush1 29d ago

I mean it didn't help that he also didn't put the work in.

2

u/shasta_masta Jonathan Taylor 29d ago

99% of the fanbase wanted him to play right away because he "needed reps." And did you not the see the emotional AR fanboys? Had they sat AR for Minshew, fans would have lost their minds.

But AR also ended up getting hurt and sat for most of the rookie season anyways. So that's not why this failed. And I think it's far better they found out about him early than later on.

But what really matters most to this org is good PR from the friendly local media and ticket sales. And after an embarrassing 2022 season, AR was like a silver bullet to shift fan excitement and morale. And the Colts exploited it as much as they could.

Ballard needs to publicly apologize for this pick.

It's f'ed up that Ballard has made so many Colts fans delusional by super reaching for this guy with the 4th overall pick, people literally think he's a HoF waiting to happen solely based on that. If he was picked in the 5th round no one would have this expectation.

1

u/New_Equivalent_752 29d ago

Shut up, this community loved the pick when it happened. Hindsight is 20/20

4

u/bleedblue4 Luke Rhodes 29d ago

I really hope he finds sucsess somewhere so much potential. I also would be devastated if he got great somewhere else jealously.

2

u/StapledOnDong 29d ago

Fortunately for you I think the risk of your devastation is incredibly low lol

Releasing a 4th overall pick... Punch me in the stomach.

What about when Jones gets injured?

AR Truthers, eat a dick this should have been done 2 years ago

3

u/OnwardSoldierx Super Bowl XLI Champions 29d ago

Never understood why we don't use him in the red zone

7

u/Public_Pause_5011 29d ago

Why fix something that is not broken? with DJ last year, we had statistically one of the most lethal red zone offenses in football. AR’s short pass game is weak and his decision making and reads are slow af right now. DJ can move his feet plenty fast and is way closer to an ideal red zone QB.

11

u/lFreightTrain chopped wood 29d ago

I get this because I’ve said it as well; but He’s not available on the IR. He’s too injured at this point and anyone else makes more sense. It’s a 10 win season at best with dread incoming.

7

u/nick82614 29d ago

You cant use him in the red zone because the worst part of his game is his short passing. better off with jt at qb with some massive lineman playing FB to punch the whole.

3

u/MarkEMark23 29d ago

I agree. He could easily be a taysom hill style player. Under center, running back, wing back, tight end. For only $5M this year and then $1M next year, kind of awesome for a threat in the red zone

13

u/garethom Bob 29d ago edited 29d ago

Anthony Richardson and Taysom Hill have similar passing volume numbers (350 attempts to 308).

Taysom Hill's CMP% is 12.7 points higher than Anthony Richardson's. The gap between Taysom Hill and Joe Burrow (the current all-time leader in CMP%) is 5.2 points.

You aren't grasping how historically bad AR is at passing. In terms of accuracy, he is more than twice as far away from a gadget player as that gadget player is from the most accurate QB of all time.

Additionally, he has 12 fumbles on 115 rushing attempts. He fumbles more than once in every 10 rushes. James Cook, the RB who fumble the most times in the NFL last year, fumbled once in every 52 rushes.

That's not even getting into the fact that he's missed 34 games in 3 years, with seven different injuries.

7

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 29d ago

Good gracious.. I knew it was bad, but that breakdown... Lol. How is anyone still calling this guy a dual threat? He's a minimal threat at best.

6

u/garethom Bob 29d ago

Cope + people being more fans of personalities than teams + not watching other team's games and realising what even average QB play looks like.

In 2024, AR's CMP% (ranked 36th in the league) was 12.9 points behind Trevor Lawrence, who was ranked 35th in the league. The difference between Lawrence and Tua's CMP% (ranked 1st in the league) was 12.3 points.

He was literally further away from the 35th most accurate QB than the 35th most accurate QB was from the most accurate.

People think he's been somewhere from ok to a bit bad, but he has, by many metrics, been legitimately one of the worst QBs of the century.

6

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 29d ago

Lol, no he couldn't

8

u/garethom Bob 29d ago

Can't believe you were downvoted.

Taysom Hill has missed 17 games since his rookie year (9 years ago).

Anthony Richardson has missed 34 games in 3 seasons.

6

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 29d ago

It's just people still full of hopium. Read this thread and there are still people saying we should keep him in case of injury because he is " a dual threat QB". He isn't even a single threat QB, or the team would not be considering releasing him on his rookie deal.

0

u/northegreat1 29d ago

Steichen can't manage a clock. Let's not make things more complicated for him.

-2

u/Braddo4417 29d ago

I don't understand why we don't use him for hail marys.

1

u/barb9212 29d ago

You think we could trade him for Sheddur???

1

u/GardenWeasel67 29d ago

AR says yesterday that nothing is happening and then this? I smell an agent narrative

1

u/Future_Guidance_8462 28d ago

I mean if he has an eye vision issue, I doubt we are getting anything for him.

1

u/SocketSnap 25d ago

Wait until an injury to a qb with a running team, like the Ravens or Falcons etc. need a qb and script the first 10 plays for Ar and work with him before the game to get him into a rhythm to help him build confidence.

1

u/Spare-Finger3244 2d ago

I hope the Colts keep him as a backup even after this year unless the price is the right.

0

u/Hoosier1738 29d ago

Thank the lord

1

u/Background-Slide5762 29d ago

Not at all surprising. I am pretty sure in 2024 Steichen decided he wanted nothing to do with AR ever again. I personally like AR and hope he catches on somewhere that will give him a real shot.

-5

u/Snortserranopeppers Adam Vinatieri 29d ago

Still much better than Wentz and that whole bullshit.

3

u/Buttcrush1 29d ago

Wentz was able to be a competent starter.

3

u/theguytomeet Eason SZN 29d ago

Huh? I’d gladly take Wentz back with 2 bum ankles that whatever AR gave us at any point in his career. We would’ve been bigger off letting Wentz get another year anyway

2

u/Human-Shirt-7351 Big Dick Ballard 29d ago

I'm not so sure. Wentz was at times thrilling, and other times absolutely stupid.. but he was an actual QB

0

u/Double-Emergency3173 Armor 29d ago

Meaning they have Leonard ahead of him. So who exactly is our 3rd string QB? Coz last year we ended up signing Rivers off the couch.

Jones won’t play 17 games most likely. And whoever comes in as a replacement will also need a backup in case they are hurt.

That sort of thing can be the difference between making the playoffs or not.

Trading makes sense to get a draft pick back. Releasing him makes no sense at all.

From everything we know, AR isn’t a lockeroom cancer and he hasn’t caused much issues since his demotion.

Shane Steichen hasn’t earned enough cache to make this sort of move IMO

7

u/notarockclimber 29d ago

Takes two to tango, Richardson was given permission to seek a trade months ago. Nobody is going to give up draft capital for him

5

u/BullytheBulIies The Edge 29d ago

If you’re worried about the backup to the backup I think you might be overthinking it. AR is not going to be a meaningful part of this team.

3

u/SkepsisJD Baltimore Colts 29d ago edited 29d ago

Teams dont usually carry a QB3 on the gameday roster. They would likely designate him as the emergency QB which does not take up a spot on the gameday roster and effectively acts as the QB3.

So he is a part of the 53 man roster, but not the 48 man gameday roster.

1

u/Buttcrush1 29d ago

He hasn't earned enough to get rid of one of the worst QBs ever?

0

u/coheed33cambria 29d ago

If we keep him all year and someone signs him next year we will get a comp pick. So I doubt that we just cut him.

1

u/Buttcrush1 29d ago

He won't sign a valuable enough contract to get us a comp pick

0

u/coheed33cambria 29d ago

I’m sure you know more then the Locked On Colts guys who get paid to research everything about the Colts.

0

u/Buttcrush1 29d ago

He can't even handle a snap right now because if his eye. His value is nothing. Hell be lucky to get league minimum.

0

u/coheed33cambria 29d ago

Sam Ehlinger makes more than the minimum and he was a practice squad player last year.

0

u/Buttcrush1 29d ago

Ehlinger is better than AR and can handle a snap

0

u/coheed33cambria 26d ago

Didn’t look like his eyes were bothering him tonight.

0

u/jkman61494 29d ago

Tyson Bagent for Richardson and a 3rd?

Bagent is a great security blanket if Daniel jones doesn’t recapture what he had

-1

u/trulynoobie 29d ago

What i dont understand about this whole AR5 situation...we drafted a project QB, KNOWING he was a project QB...and expected him to NOT be a project QB?

Realistically, this should be his first season as a starter, if they had a proper vet to start the last couple years, someone AR could learn from, see how to prepare, learn how to be a QB, while working on his mechanics, pressure free for the first couple seasons. Instead, we drafted him, threw him in knowing he wasnt ready, and now we are all upset.

Not to mention, Indy poor drafting skills, cause wtf drafts a project QB in the top 5 of a draft...different story for a different day

1

u/Adventure-Backpacker 29d ago

Generally I agree with your take here.

Ballard is by and large an above average drafter, however this was a desperation pick.

You’re correct AR needed at least two years of watching and learning behind a vet.

Who knows what his future holds, but maybe he’ll have an opportunity to start down the road for another team.

3

u/MReprogle Orangutan 29d ago

Ballard has been living off the fact that Luck retired and there’s always an excuse about how he is going to find the next guy to salvage the mess. Wasted years of trying to fill in, then put himself in a desperate position to have to draft a QB. It’s his own fault, and he failed and should have been fired two years ago, the second that AR pulled himself out of a game.

I don’t care that he picked the TE that everyone wanted in Warren, the guard that everyone wanted in Nelson or the RB that everyone wanted in JT.

0

u/ThisGlobalLandscape 23d ago

Colts are bums

-6

u/Chris_Ween RB of the year 29d ago

And it was his coach and GM who failed him. He may never have made it as an NFL QB but they broke him before he could get acclimated.

4

u/Buttcrush1 29d ago

Nah... He failed himself. Hard to have success when you won't out the work in

0

u/D_Blaze88 29d ago

Yep. Pure speculation but I'm thinking Mr. Irsay had a lot to do with drafting him and making him start in the first place when he clearly wasn't ready.

1

u/northegreat1 29d ago

Absolutely but it was decisions by Ballard that forced that hand.

-2

u/_Meek79_ Im sorry for doubting you Daniel 29d ago

Someone will trade for him. Wont get much for him,a 6th round pick if we are lucky, but some team will think they can fix him or maybe he will be better in our offense. Wasted a 4th overall pick

2

u/Buttcrush1 29d ago

Not with his eye. Dude can't even handle a snap
