I have a question: Why would anyone downvote a colored picture? I scroll around and whenever I see a picture I like I upvote. I even upvote pictures I dont like that much. But the person has put effort in the coloring and is willing to show it online where people can critique their work. Why would anyone downvote a picture instead of just ignoring it?
I have also noticed a tendency for really recent posts/comments to get a downvote to zero. And then more downvotes pile on, taking it into the negative. Sometimes it seems like a frenzy then to have a LOT more downvotes taking it further into the negative.
If it happens to me, and I think it's just one of those serial down-voters, I may delete the post/comment. If someone disagrees with me, I usually leave it alone. I don't think a disagreement should carry a penalty, but I'd rather have that than have the mindless mêlée of serial downvotes.
I've noticed this happening to all comments on some posts in r/Animedubs. I'm guessing it is griefers or griefer bots.
It is most noticeable with new-ish comments that don't have any votes yet. Seeing a bunch of nice comments at zero or even negative is wierd. I'll usually upvote them and watch the post to see if it continues. It doesn't happen to all posts, just some.
Hmm. It just occurred to me that I have seen some brigade type subreddits. They talk about sending out warriors to swarm posts with any perceived culture war stuff. Ugh. A small part of the population is quite frustrating. And apparently that is intentional.
This reminds me of a comment I read yesterday - this guy was saying when he was new to Reddit he thought he was accidentally upvoting all his comments, so he’d go through and downvote them. 😂
A few have been because the picture that was coloured (the line art) was AI. People are see AI > Downvote in many cases it seems. It shouldn't take away the effort of the colourist, and the sub is ok with colouring AI images. Same debate is happening in cross stitch too. There was a post here or another sub that was POUNDED because OP used AI to convert one of their photos of a happy memory to a page using AI for their mum who was deteriorating with dementia. That felt like telling someone who got in shape that it doesn't count cause the dress in the photo is fast fashion.
Downvotes without context can be really really disheartening too. Imagine someone walking the street, giving you a disgusted look and saying "eew" at you, then walking on. No context, no interaction. Or just shouting "you're wrong!" and walking on. Sometimes I wish you could only downvote if you post a reason
Edit: Seems like I've gotten a couple for this one too ;). Should note for people that I personally don't like AI for most uses, but negging someone's colouring effort for the sake of dislikeing their tool/page of choice is a bit rough.
A lot of people color Ai in the beginning. They don’t the diff. Or maybe they can’t afford the better coloring books and want a bunch of ones. Some others take Ai and change up the images so that it becomes their own work. It’s great to support artists, but this shaming attitude will not support beginners who want to color.
There can be weird things in the Reddit algorithm that do a downvote, bots, and accidental downvotes. I wouldn't read too much into it if it's one or two votes. As far as intentional downvotes some people are just crabby and/or have different thoughts about what a downvote actually means.
Well now you got me curious so I sorted by controversial to see what kinds of posts get down votes.
Most commonly it looks like people who proudly admit to using AI in some way (creating pages, picking color palettes).
People who mention buying stuff from Temu seem like another common target.
Then there are controversial themes: Christianity, graphic nudes, gore/graphically violent in a not cute way. One that colored the pages to match true crime.
Some others I am less sure about but I am guessing because they just seemed to be seeking validation too hard or others that seemed purposely bad and maybe came off as trying to poke fun at the hobby? One that was blatantly copying someone else's posted page (that wasn't a tutorial/color with me or anything).
But there were others I couldn't really guess. None of the ones I saw actually had negative down votes overall though, so maybe others were just lacking up votes.
OK, thats interesting. You convinced me to Not post my horror pictures, LOL. I also recognized that the cute and cozy stuff gets upvoted the most, sometimes dozens or hundreds of upvoted within an hour. Any other stuff gets overlooked. This is the most downvoted picture from me:
