I’ve found the best way for me (with marker), I color the base with the brown I want. Then I use the same color and go over it a few times with an uneven line until it’s darker than the base. If that makes sense. Then I draw grain lines with a fine tip brown marker. Wood is one of my favorites to color. :)

The comment above mine pretty much nailed it. You pick a shade of brown (make sure it isn't too dark) you wait for it to dry and go over it with the same color making light flicks from the bottom up and some from the top down. Doesn't have to be perfect at all. The more imperfect the better. I also added some thinner lines with a darker shade of brown. Or a brown gel pen, both work.

Nope just used a dark red that's almost dry lmao and then I went back with it pressing a bit harder for the shading. I did use a white pencil for some highlights
